Koraput: Koraput district administration on Friday celebrated Independence Day across all 28 revenue villages in Kotia panchayat under Pottangi block, including the 21 villages claimed by both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
The large-scale celebrations, aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and confidence among people, were observed in schools, anganwadi centres, and govt establishments. The national flag was unfurled in each village, and meetings were organised to educate villagers and students on the significance of independence. A Tricolour rally was also taken out across the panchayat.
Officials said the celebrations spanned 21 govt schools and 26 anganwadi centres, with national flags unfurled at govt establishments in each village, apart from all revenue villages.
"Each village was assigned a senior official to oversee the programme, hoist the national flag at the respective government establishment, and ensure smooth conduct of events. Villagers and students participated in large numbers," said block development officer (Pottangi) Ramanath Nayak.
The celebrations in Kotia, a panchayat caught in a nearly six-decade-old territorial dispute, carry added significance.

Both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh claim jurisdiction over 21 of its 28 villages, and the matter has been pending in the Supreme Court since 1968.
Over the past few weeks, several senior leaders, including deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida have visited the panchayat to review development activities and reaffirm Odisha's claim over the region.
Kotia sarpanch Lui Gamel, who hoisted the national flag at the panchayat headquarters, described the celebrations as a morale booster. "By holding Independence Day programmes in every village, the administration has strengthened people's emotional bond with Odisha and instilled a sense of pride and unity among residents. It is a commendable step," he said.
