'Coolie' director Lokesh Kanagaraj seeks blessings at Rameshwaram; Rajinikanth's film set for clash with 'War 2'

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) With just days to go for 'Coolie's grand August 14 release, director Lokesh Kanagaraj took time out from the frenzy to pay a visit to the revered Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameshwaram on August 12. The filmmaker performed rituals and took a holy dip at the temple's sacred well, seeking blessings for his upcoming project. This marks his second spiritual visit in recent weeks — earlier, he was spotted offering prayers at the Tiruvannamalai temple. 'Coolie' storms advance booking charts Beyond its spiritual send-off, 'Coolie' is already making history in ticket counters. As of August 13, the film has raked in Rs 20 crore in domestic advance bookings, with over 9 lakh tickets sold. According to Business Today, Tamil Nadu alone contributed Rs 12 crore, while Kerala and Karnataka brought in Rs 5.35 crore and Rs 4.15 crore respectively. The Hindi belt response has been modest so far, with 17,500 tickets sold for Day 1 and an expected Rs 4–4.5 crore opening in the region. However, the film's dominance in South India and overseas markets is undeniable. The Independence Day weekend will see both films locking horns, but with 'Coolie's dominance in the South and overseas, and 'War 2's grip on the Hindi markets, the stage is set for a box office showdown of historic proportions. Starring Rajinikanth in the lead alongside Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj, 'Coolie' is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

More battery vehicles around Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple can ease travel for devotees

More battery-operated vehicles (e-vehicles) around the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram could ease the travel for devotees in the vehicle-restricted areas around the temple. Barring West Car Street, all heavy vehicles and cars are restricted on East, South and North Car Streets. In this situation, those entering the temple area from the bus stand or railway station through the West Car Street should walk about 500 metres to reach the East temple entrance. Also, those who enter temple following their ritual in Agnitheertham would enter only through the East entrance. N. Jeyakanthan, a resident of Rameswaram, said that as only bikes would be allowed on the streets surrounding the temple, devotees would seek the assistance of paid fish cart service. 'Though few battery-operated vehicles are operated by the temple and few organisations, it would not even be near the demand during festival seasons,' he added. As the Ramanathaswamy temple is the one of the most popular devotional destinations in the country, thousands of tourists from other States visit the temple every day, he stated. Even when the fish carts were of a great help to the tourists and devotees in taking them to the temple and carrying their luggage to their lodges nearby, it would not be enough and comfortable for elderly people, Mr. Jeyakanthan noted. Since the pushcarts were narrow and a bit higher from the ground level, it was not an easy task for everyone to jump on to the seating area, he observed. Maruthu, a fish cart operator, said that they charge about ₹20 to ₹30 depending upon the distance they take the passengers. 'As we also help the tourists carry their luggage to their staying areas we cannot use the seated cart vehicles. To adhere to the needs of the people, we operate the fish cart which gives enough space to accommodate both the people and their luggage,' he added. Though a tourist from North India who visited the temple during the recent flag hoisting event of the 'Adi Thirukalyanam' celebrations felt that a battery-operated vehicle would be comfortable for his elderly mother, due to the busy day, he said that all the e-vehicles were engaged. 'So, we just loaded the cart with our luggage and seated our mother while we walked all the way to the lodge from the temple,' he added. A temple authority said that about six e-vehicles were operated for assisting the tourists, but if the need arises, they could source more vehicles.

Madurai HC directs HR, CE to respond on plea to restore 10-day brahmotsavam at Rameswaram temple

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) department to file counter affidavit on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition which sought a direction to conduct the brahmotsavam (Ramalinga Prathishtai) at the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram in the traditional manner for 10 days, instead of limiting it to three days. A bench comprising justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete noted that this year's festival commenced on Tuesday (June 3) and therefore, no direction could be issued. However, the judges recorded the submission of the temple's counsel that the temple authorities could look into the customary practices relating to the festival and follow them from next year. The case was adjourned for two weeks. The petitioner, Elephant of Chennai, alleged that the festival, also known as Ramalinga Prathishtai, had not been conducted for the past 10 years. The festival begins in the Tamil month 'Ani' and take place for 10 days. However, this year, it is being organised in 'Vaikasi', only for three days, he said adding that such alteration or dilution of an ancient temple festival by the HR and CE authorities hurts the sentiments of devotees and is an offence under Rule 8 and 9 of the Tamil Nadu Temple Entry Authorisation Act, 1947.
