UAEU, McGill University announce winners of inaugural Joint Research Grant Cycle
10 June 2025 20:09 AL AIN (WAM)The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and McGill University have announced the winners of the first cycle of their joint research grant programme, with winning projects focussing on machine learning, artificial intelligence, immunotherapy and gene editing initiative, established to promote collaborative, high-impact research between the two institutions, supports interdisciplinary projects addressing global challenges in science, medicine, and law.'Reinforcement Learning and Energy-Efficient TinyML Approach for VTOL UAVs', which focuses on enhancing capabilities through advanced machine learning, was one of the grant winners, as was 'SORT: Safety of OIT in a Randomised Trial for Peanuts, Milk, and Eggs', a leading study assessing the safety of oral immunotherapy. 'Creating and Validating Generative AI Models that Synthesise High-Quality MRI Images of Multiple Sclerosis Patients', a project that aims to improve diagnostic imaging using artificial intelligence, was another grant winner, alongside 'CRISPR-Cas9: Advancing Gene Editing and Exploring Its Ethical and Legal Dimensions', which explores the frontiers of gene-editing technology and its social on this initiative, Dr. Rami Beiram, Associate Provost for Research at UAEU, stated: 'This collaboration with McGill University demonstrates our strategic commitment to fostering global partnerships that drive impactful, interdisciplinary research. The awarded projects highlight how academic cooperation can generate transformative solutions to complex challenges in health, technology, and society. UAE University registers over 300 patents in 2025

From this perspective, the university seeks to expand its research system, enhance partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry centers globally. This aligns with the national strategy for advanced innovation, which places research at the heart of sustainable development," Dr Beiram UAEU's global standing in terms of the number of US granted patents grew to prominence in 2021, when the university was ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide, achieving 90th place globally, according to a joint report by the National Academy of Inventors and the United States Intellectual Property Alliance (USIPA).The ranking cemented UAEU's role as a leading scientific institution supporting research and development across the Arab region and the Middle 2025, the university has continued its research achievements, increasing the number of its registered patents specifically to 303 patents across various scientific sectors, with a focus on transforming research outcomes into practical applications that benefit patents span a wide range of academic disciplines and align closely with national strategic priorities, including renewable energy, medical and health sciences, space science and technology, artificial intelligence, material science, and manufacturing.A significant number of these patents come from the College of Engineering, reflecting its strong focus on innovation and applied research. Other colleges, such as the College of Science, College of Information Technology, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, also actively contribute through patents in biotechnology, material sciences, and advanced medical care solutions. The university's support for diverse specialisations has led to patents that integrate expertise from multiple disciplines, such as AI-supported medical devices, smart energy management systems, and sustainable building materials. Through initiatives like innovation centers, research hubs, and industry partnerships, UAEU continues to foster a strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among its students and faculty.
