Man steals cheques from Coimbatore bank drop box, deposits them in his account

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police are searching for a man who stole cheques from a bank drop box and deposited them in his account. Sathish, a customer of a private bank's branch in RS Puram, deposited two cheques totalling Rs 14,000 in the bank's collection drop box on July 5. When the amount was not credited to his account even after six days, Sathish visited the bank to discuss the matter with branch manager Ramkumar. Upon checking the cheque status, Ramkumar discovered that the amount had been credited to a different account. Ramkumar filed a formal complaint with the RS Puram police. The police obtained CCTV footage showing a man opening the drop box and stealing the cheque, which was later deposited into another account. The police said, "It is highly unusual to deposit cheques issued in someone else's name. We have CCTV footage and details of the account where the money was credited. The involvement of bank staff cannot be ruled out, as such operations would be difficult without insider assistance. We are investigating all possible angles." According to bank sources, more than 10 cheques worth over Rs 1.40 lakh have been stolen and encashed through different accounts. The police registered a case. Further investigations are on.

Monthly ‘green chaupals' in villages to boost plantation at grassroots

Lucknow: The state govt has fixed the third Friday of every month for holding of green chaupals in every gram panchayat of the state. The govt order specifies that in case of a state holiday on the specified day, chaupal should be held on the next working day. Among many objectives of these chaupals is to sensitise people on environment conservation and develop every village as a green village, plant trees, harvest rainwater, carry out organic farming, use solar power, and adopt an environmentally sustainable way of life. It is for the first time that the govt will constitute green chaupals, first at gram panchayat level and then in urban local bodies. With the GO already issued and communicated to districts, their constitution will now start. "We may integrate it with carbon credits in future, and give green fund to villages with plantations on their gram sabha land, by assessing and evaluating carbon credits generated by them. The fund can be used for environment cause," said APCCF (project), UP Forest, Ramkumar. "If people face problems in getting access to environment-related schemes implemented by govt departments, these chaupals will ensure that problems are brought to the notice of officers concerned," he said. Publicity material on schemes related to environment conservation implemented by different govt departments will be distributed in chaupals. A green chaupal, headed by gram Pradhan, will have 12 members. Section or beat officer of the forest department will be the member secretary, while the gram panchayat secretary will be the coordinator. Three gram panchayat members, a woman from an SHG, principal of a primary school, anganwadi helper, rozgar sewak, progressive farmer, representatives of NGOs working in environment sector, representative of biodiversity management committee, and local level officers from govt departments will be the other members. Divisional forest officers will coordinate with other departments for smooth functioning of chaupals. The performance of chaupals will be reviewed every month by CDOs and district plantation committees.

High commissions, platform fee: Namakkal hotel owners stop deliveries via food aggregators

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal City and Taluk Hotel Owners' Association has stopped all food delivery services through Swiggy and Zomato from July 1, causing a major disruption in the region's food delivery sector. This decision was made due to increasing dissatisfaction among local hotel owners over high and inconsistent commission charges, hidden fees and unilateral discount policies set by these platforms. After negotiations with Swiggy and Zomato failed, services have been halted as per a resolution adopted at a recent meeting led by association president M Ramkumar. Ramkumar explained that commissions can reach up to 33% for some restaurants, making it impossible to keep prices affordable for customers. For example, a dish priced at Rs 150 in a restaurant is listed for around Rs 230 on these platforms due to high commissions. This leads customers to believe restaurants are overcharging, when in reality, the platforms take the excess. The association demanded a standard commission cap at 18%, transparent breakdowns of all charges and the removal of hidden fees. However, as these demands were not met, the association proceeded with the service halt.

Railway loco running staff stage protest seeking adequate rest

Members of SRMU Loco Running Staff (LRS) Wing staged a demonstration here on Tuesday pressing for better working conditions for locopilots and assistant locopilots. Speaking on the occasion, Southern Railway Mazdoor Union division secretary J.M. Rafi complained that running staff working in goods trains were being subjected to longer working hours. The administration should stick to the Railway Board's directive that the locopilots and ALPs should return to their headquarters within 48 hours. He also demanded to fill all the vacancies in the posts of running staff. The running staff should be given 30 hours of rest every week. The running staff of passenger trains should not be made to bypass their headquarters. The present crew link for express and passenger trains should be changed to ensure that they do not get night for more than two days a week in the interest of railway safety, said the union assistant divisional secretary V. Ramkumar. Better quality of food in running rooms and early provision of mutual transfer for running staff were some of the other demands. LRS wing divisional president Ravishankar and secretary Alaguraja were present.
