What is the highest denomination of the Indian Rupee ever printed by the RBI?
Many individuals recall the Rs 2,000 note, now no longer in circulation, as the highest denomination in India following its introduction after the demonetisation in 2016. Interestingly, in a period in India's history when its currency consisted of annas and paisas, larger denomination notes coexisted. According to the RBI, the most significant note ever issued was the Rs 10000 note. The 10000 note was first introduced in 1938 but was demonetised in January 1946 by the British authorities amid their growing concerns over hoarding and the rise in black-market activities during World War II. Nonetheless, the note was reintroduced post-independence, in 1954, alongside other high-denomination notes like the Rs 5,000, and was primarily used for large transactions by businesses and traders, rather than ordinary citizens. However, in an effort to combat the black money economy, it was once again demonetised in 1978 and was formalised through the High Denomination Bank Note (Demonetisation) Act, 1978, under which all the high denomination bank notes' will cease to be legal tender after January 16, 1978. Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan suggested the introduction of Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 notes, as reported by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which was rejected, and Rs 2,000 notes were issued instead on May 18, 2016. Notably, Ramkumar, an Indian based in Dubai, was claimed to have the rare Rs 10,000 note from 2015. According to a Gulf News source, the Reserve Bank of India's data indicates that before the 1978 demonetisation, only 346 Rs 10,000 notes were in circulation, with fewer than 10 such notes available today.

Murder accused shows up at Delhi businessman's shop, threatens to kill him if he doesn't pay Rs 50 lakh
The Delhi Police said Sunday they arrested a man, a murder accused who was released from jail in September 2024, for allegedly trying to extort Rs 50 lakh from an electrical appliances shop owner in the Madhu Vihar area. According to the police, the accused, Kartar Bhati, first went to Singla Electricals in West Vinod Nagar on May 11, with an accomplice at 6.50 pm and talked to its owner Ramkumar. 'One of them introduced himself as Kartar Bhati, claiming he was responsible for the murder of a person named Bhure. He produced a pocket diary containing the home and shop addresses of the complainant and threatened him, stating that he had recently been released from jail and knew that Ramkumar was a wealthy man,' said Abhishek Dhania, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East. Bhati then allegedly told Ramkumar that he would meet the same fate as Bhure if he did not pay up. Ramkumar, though rattled, did not file a police complaint immediately. 'On Friday, the complainant received a WhatsApp call from the same person, identified on the app as Kartar Bhati, reaffirming the extortion demand. On Saturday, the complainant approached the Madhu Vihar police station with the complaint. A case was registered under sections 308 and 3 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,' DCP Dhania said. Three teams, two under Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Jitendera Malik and one under Assistant Commissioner of Police (Madhu Vihar) Tilak Chand Bhist, began a search for Bhati, the police said. Using CCTV footage, the police identified Bhati, a resident of Gautam Budh Nagar, and the other accused, Nadir. 'Utilising real-time intelligence inputs and strategic surveillance, the police team successfully apprehended Bhati. Upon arrest, the diary used to intimidate the complainant was also recovered,' DCP Dhania said. The police said Bhati is a habitual offender, with seven cases against him, including charges under the Arms Act and for murder. 'During the investigation, it also came to light that the name Bhure, mentioned during the extortion threat, referred to Rahul aka Bhura aka Bhure, a resident of West Vinod Nagar, Delhi, who was murdered on June 3, 2020. The accused clearly used his alleged involvement to scare the complainant. However, the prompt action ensured that a potentially dangerous extortion case was neutralised before any harm could occur,' DCP Dhania said.

Loco pilots protest panel report on working conditions
Madurai: The running staff—loco pilots and assistant loco pilots—of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) held a protest on Monday, condemning the Railway Board's multi-disciplinary committee report, which ruled out their demand for breaks during duty hours to have food and attend to nature's call. According to loco pilots, they are not allowed to have food in the loco cabin and hardly get 30 seconds during stoppages to attend to nature's calls. Some of the superfast express trains travel non-stop for 200 to 300km, making their plight unbearable. "For instance, the stop between Chennai Central and Vijayawada is nearly 430km, and the running staff don't get any break to have food or attend to nature's call. The situation turns worse when there are women crew," said SRMU's assistant divisional secretary Ramkumar. The running staff also opposed the committee report proposing to replace the co-pilot in high-speed trains with assistant loco pilots. High-speed trains, plying at 130kmph, require two seasoned loco staff, and by appointing ALPs in place of co-pilots, the board is endangering the safety of trains, they said. The protesting running staff also demanded the board reduce their working hours to six hours, like controllers who work only six hours since their job roles are classified as an intensive category. The loco staff pointed out that they also undertake such intensive jobs of operating locos non-stop and are forced to work for 11 to 12 hours, especially in goods trains. They also demanded the removal of CCTV cameras fixed inside loco cabins, reasoning that it puts them under the pressure of being watched throughout their work hours.
