Charlie Morton whiffs 10 as Orioles shut out Angels

June 14 - Charlie Morton struck out 10 in five innings and the Baltimore Orioles withstood the visiting Los Angeles Angels and two lengthy weather delays to win 2-0 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. Ryan O'Hearn and Ramon Laureano homered for the Orioles, who are 2-2 on their six-game homestand. Morton (3-7) was sharp from the get-go, but he didn't return following a rain delay in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed five hits and issued one walk, becoming the first pitcher in Orioles history to produce two games with 10 or more strikeouts in five or fewer innings. Yennier Cano, Gregory Soto, Bryan Baker and Felix Bautista each worked an inning from the bullpen in the combined eight-hitter -- all singles. Bautista picked up his 13th save, striking out two. The game marked the major league debut for Angels second baseman Christian Moore, who went 0-for-3 with one strikeout from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. A year ago, Moore was playing in the College World Series and helping Tennessee win a national championship. He was the No. 8 overall selection in last summer's draft. Joe Adell and Luis Rengifo each had two hits for the Angels. Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz (3-8) also didn't return following the fifth-inning stoppage. Two of the four hits he surrendered in 4 1/3 innings went for solo home runs. The game began after a 70-minute delay. The game's first two batters reached base before Morton struck out the next three, including Mike Trout. O'Hearn's 10th homer of the season led off the second. He added a double in the eighth. Laureano's eighth homer opened the fifth. With one out and one on, the game entered a rain delay that lasted slightly more than an hour. The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and didn't convert. --Field Level Media

Orioles outfielder ejected as Baltimore dropped first game of doubleheader against Twins

The Baltimore Orioles are not having the kind of season they, or anyone else, expected. Baltimore entered Wednesday dead-last in the American League East, carrying a 15-24 record that marked the second worst in the league and fourth worst in all of baseball. Many anticipated the Orioles as a playoff contender, if not a potential pennant winner. Advertisement Those struggles came to a demonstrative head on Wednesday during the first game of a double-header the Orioles would ultimately lose to the Minnesota Twins, 6-3. The Twins meanwhile, picked up a ninth straight win with the victory. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Ramon Laureano was ejected in the team's first game of a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, May 14, Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Orioles outfielder Ramon Laureano was ejected by home plate umpire James Hoye in the fifth inning of what was, at the time, a 4-3 game. Laureano didn't care of Hoye's called third strike on a 3-2 pitch that appeared to just nick the bottom outside corner. The Baltimore batter tossed his bat gently up in the air and knocked it to the ground, then followed by spiking his helment more hardly into the grass. Hoye signaled to Laureano the ejection and the outfielder remarked a few choice words, took a couple of steps toward the umpire and pointed in his face before walking off. Advertisement Heston Kjerstad replaced Laureano in the lineup and walked in his only plate appearance before the Twins tacked on two insurance runs to seal things. Laureano, in his eighth year in the league, has largely served as the Orioles' fourth outfielder this season. He entered Wednesday slashing .200/.260/.486. Orioles' Laureano comes off the bench to hit 2 homers, then nearly adds a 3rd

Associated Press BALTIMORE (AP) — Ramon Laureano came within a few feet of an extraordinarily rare accomplishment. Laureano's eighth-inning drive was caught in front of the wall. Had it gone a bit farther, it would have been his third homer — after beginning the game on the bench. Only one player since at least 1906 has homered three times in a game without starting: Cincinnati's Art Shamsky against Pittsburgh on Aug. 12, 1966. Laureano settled for two, and that was enough to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Laureano was the first Orioles player to come off the bench and hit two homers since Trey Mancini in 2017. 'Always stay ready,' Laureano said. 'Just wait for the chance, and that's it.' Laureano entered in the top of the third, replacing left fielder Heston Kjerstad, who had been hit by a pitch around the elbow. Laureano's two-run drive in the third gave the Orioles a 5-3 lead, and he added a solo shot in the seventh to make it 6-4. His eighth-inning flyout went 390 feet to center field according to Statcast, but it would not have been a homer in any of the 30 ballparks. 'It was a cool day for sure,' he said. The Orioles signed Laureano in February, and he's in the middle of a bit of a logjam in the outfield. He's put up better numbers against lefties in his career, and he's started only five games this season so far. His homers Saturday came against two righties, Hunter Greene and Carson Spiers. Even after his big day Saturday, Laureano is just 4 for 21 at the plate this year. 'Ramon stays ready. He's had a tough time getting opportunities so far this year,' manager Brandon Hyde said. 'I've talked to him about it. I'm going to try to play him as much as I possibly can when I can get him in there. But he's a pro.' In addition to his work at the plate, Laureano made a leaping catch in left to end the game with two on in the ninth. 'Definitely the player of the game,' Hyde said. ___ AP MLB: recommended
