Ramona Singer is right — New York should be proud of Daniel Penny, and he continues to prove it

It was Real Housewife meets Real Life hero. Ramona Singer, who attended the Daniel Penny Gala on Friday night, was heckled when she took to social media and posted a snap with the man of the hour — captioning it, 'So proud Daniel Penny !! #apennysaved #hero.' Fools online called the image 'foul' and blasted Singer for posing with Penny — with one writing, 'Even for you this is LOW.' Someone else chimed in, 'Proud of what exactly? He murdered a homeless man! You are shameless.' Whoever these half-wits are, they clearly did not follow a lick of Penny's sensational trial — in which he was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide. 6 Former Bravo star Ramona Singer posted this picture with Daniel Penny from his namesake gala — and was dragged by online followers. Ramona Singer/Instagram Furthermore, if they found themselves in danger's way, they'd be lucky to have a selfless dude like Penny around. So count me in on Singer's assessment. Penny is a true protector. I sat in the courtroom throughout his month-long trial last year and watched as New Yorkers of all ages and races testified to the unholy terror they felt as Jordan Neely, a mentally ill drug addict with a history of assault, lunged toward passengers and ranted that he wanted to kill. 6 At the Daniel Penny Gala, the Long Island native gave a short but heartfelt speech thanking his legal team, family, girlfriend and all who supported him. Kirsten Fleming/NY Post The trial exposed the dysfunction of our city and the cowardice of pols, who allowed homelessness and dangerous mental illness to fester. It also showed the unquenchable appetite to insert a racial narrative where there was none. But the woke fever broke and both justice and common sense prevailed. It was a win for Penny but also for New Yorkers. On Friday, supporters of the Long Island native gathered at Manhattan's Union League Club for Penny's first-ever namesake gala, which was put on by his crack legal team, led by Steven Raiser and Thomas Kenniff. 6 The Daniel Penny Gala was put on by Penny's lawyers, Thomas Kenniff and Steven Raiser, who are seen embracing their client at the dinner. Courtesy of Doug Holt It was a chance for Penny to thank his supporters, and the three hope to make it an annual event that will raise money to help the mentally ill in New York. The dark wood room was filled with local power players devoted to bringing order back to the Big Apple, including former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. Former Dem Governor David Paterson charmed the crowd during a brief speech and Republicans Curtis Sliwa and Andrew Giuliani were on hand as well. And of course, Singer. 6 In a now famous photo, Daniel Penny's mother Gina Flaim touches his face as the pair walk into the courthouse. REUTERS For Penny, who is a Marine Corps veteran, it was a night of gratitude. 'New Yorkers are the reason I enlisted in the first place,' he said during a short but heartfelt speech. 'The response to the attacks on the World Trade Center is inspiring. Strangers sacrificing everything to help strangers. I admired and looked up to those who dedicated their lives to the service of others. That's the New York I grew up in.' But when he was facing trial for the death of Neely, Penny said, he was moved by the support he received from complete strangers who had nothing to gain and, in many cases, a lot to lose. For that, he was 'humbled and thankful,' a sentiment he extended to his legal team, as well as his parents, sisters and girlfriend — who, he said, 'who lost friends and stood up for me.' 6 Every day in court, Daniel Penny was stoic and poised. Steven Hirsch He also thanked his new employers, Marc Andreessen, David Ulevitch and Ben Horowitz of the a16z venture capitalism firm, for giving him a shot and allowing him to move forward with his life. Judge Jeanine Pirro, who was meant to co-host the event with 77 WABC's Sid Rosenberg, missed it after President Trump announced her appointment as the interim US Attorney for Washington, DC. She sent a voice message that drew applause when she compared Penny to the stoics of ancient Greece. There is no better way to describe the media-shy surfer dude. When I got a few minutes to chat with Penny and shake his hand, he expressed gratitude for my support and noted that the courtroom seats for the media — essentially wooden church pews — looked supremely uncomfortable. 6 After Daniel Penny was found not guilty, he and his lawyers, Steven Raiser and Thomas Kenniff celebrated at a Stone Street bar. Steven Hirsch But his seat was, undoubtedly, the least hospitable in the house. And to get there every day, he walked by heckling protesters and news cameras, without betraying a single emotion. Penny didn't seem to think he deserved much praise for that, but I still marvel over his superhuman poise and strength. On Friday night, he was much lighter and more charismatic, albeit overwhelmed with the attention. From how I see it, Penny is an old-fashioned hero: He doesn't want the praise or the spotlight. He just wanted to help when called.

'Real Housewives' has filmed in RI before. Do you remember their 2020 romp in Newport?

Bravo announced an Rhode Island expansion of the "Real Housewives." On May 7, the network teased four new shows in a cheeky X post. "IT'S. ALL. HAPPENING," read an Instagram caption from the NBCUniversal-owned cable network. "Set against the shores of the Ocean State, 'The Real Housewives' franchise expands into the world of a tight-knit circle of Rhode Islanders who have deep community roots and families that go back generations," the official description said. However, did you know that the "Real Housewives" have actually been in Rhode Island before? "The Real Housewives of New York City" had a big blow-out in one of Rhode Island's most glamorous cities. Here's a flashback to when the "The Real Housewives" were in the Ocean State. In season 12, episode nine of "Real Housewives of New York City," the girls decide to go on a planned trip to Newport, Rhode Island. "Newport is like a very shi shi place," show mainstay Ramona Singer said. "Great shops, great oysters, great restaurants, a lot of atmosphere." Singer later said that Newport is akin to a miniature Southampton, New York. The main cast stayed at the famous Castle Hill Inn. "Look at the ocean," Luann de Lesseps said, marveling at the view from her inn suite. They also went to Bannister's Wharf and visited the store tyler böe, 33 Bannister's Wharf #3009. While the cast thought of Newport as a "shi shi" place, the episode was messy with some cast members wondering if they would be "thrown out of Rhode Island" for inappropriate behavior. They cast also had a fight between two of the stars over alcohol consumption. Jay Stahl and Paul Edward Parker contributed to the reporting of this story. Rin Velasco is a trending reporter. Bravo Puts 'Real Housewives Of New York City' On Indefinite Pause But 'Hopes' It Will Return

It's a sad day for Bravo fans, as the network has announced its plans to put "The Real Housewives of New York" on an indefinite pause. The news about the beloved iteration, which first aired on Bravo in 2008 and featured stars like Bethenny Frankel and Ramona Singer, arrived days after NBC Universal (Bravo's parent company) shared its plans to expand the "Real Housewives" series with a new city. According to a new report from Page Six, sources close to Bravo and "RHONY" producers have said the network is placing the series on an indefinite pause after 15 seasons on the air. However, it may not be the end of the show in the Big Apple. Page Six also confirmed that Bravo "hopes" the show will return in the future. "We're trying to figure that show out," an insider said. "We want to figure it out. We think there's still life in it." The news about the "RHONY" hiatus isn't the first time the network has halted the New York-based show. After season 13, which featured Sonja Morgan, Leah McSweeney, and newcomer Eboni K. Williams, Bravo canceled the reunion before saying they were at a "crossroads" regarding how to move the series forward. Months later, Andy Cohen shared that they were starting from scratch and hosting a "major casting search" across the city in hopes of breathing new life into the wildly popular version of the show. "And when you start from scratch, Beverly Hills was a really successful season 1 cast, Jersey was a really successful Season 1 cast, Salt Lake City was a really successful season 1 cast. Those were people who were in each other's lives, who knew each other, who were relatives. That's one of the things that is going to be fun about this. Because when we find people that we love, we can say, 'Who are your friends? Who else is in your life?'" he said. "I think it will be the rainbow that is New York City. That's the goal," he added. Loyal Bravo fans and "RHONY" defenders have already begun reacting to the news online, with one watcher saying they'd "never forgive Bravo for ruining their best franchise." Another viewer slammed the network for the "disrespect" they've shown the "RHONY OGs who built the franchise." "The OG RHONY was a wild, beautiful ride [and] truly iconic," a third fan posted. "I loved it deeply. The reboot had its moments, but let's be real, it didn't hit the same. I've already mourned the OG loss, but Bravo saying it's really over? I'm not okay." Although disappointing for some, Bravo's move to pause "RHONY" indefinitely may not be the end for the over-the-top production. In 2021, eight years after Bravo paused "The Real Housewives of Miami," the network announced its plans to reboot the show on its streaming app, Peacock. Cohen said in 2020 that he'd been a big "advocate for Peacock bringing back Miami." The revived cast includes returners Alexia Nepola, Lisa Hochstein, and Larsa Pippen, as well as newcomers Guerdy Abraira, Julia Lemigova, and Dr. Nicole Martin. It's also not lost on fans that the "RHONY" announcement came days after Bravo shared its plans to launch a new iteration of the "Real Housewives" franchise in Rhode Island. According to the press release, the series will follow a "tight-knit circle of Rhode Islanders who have deep community roots and families that go back generations." "With aspirational lives, thriving businesses and tangled family dynamics, these decade-long friendships prove that in a state this small, there's no escaping your past … or each other," it continued. But that's not the only new series joining the Bravo family. The cable service also shared three other shows that will hit the air, including a "Ladies of London" reboot, which will feature "British blue bloods, ambitious American expats, and glamorous international socialites," a "Valley" spin-off, starring Reza Farahan and MJ Javid, and a "Wife Swap" series featuring "Real Housewives."

Bravo Fans Furious With Ramona Singer For Branding Daniel Penny A 'Hero'

Many Bravo viewers are used to Ramona Singer being in hot water, but this time, she may have gone too far for people's liking. On social media, "Real Housewives of New York" fans have been sharing their unfiltered thoughts about Ramona Singer's most recent Instagram post, in which she posed for a picture with Daniel Penny, a man who was acquitted of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges in December 2024. Singer, who starred in the original production of "RHONY" from 2008 to 2021, shocked the Bravo community when she uploaded a (now-deleted) picture of herself next to Penny on Instagram. "So proud [of] Daniel Penny!!" she wrote. "#Apennysaved #hero." For those unfamiliar with Penny, the U.S. Marine veteran garnered national attention following an incident on May 1, 2023, when he restrained a homeless man on a New York subway in a chokehold, ultimately leading to the man's death. The case sparked widespread debate, with many labeling Penny a hero, while others felt he used excessive force. He was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, but was acquitted of all criminal charges in December 2024. Many of Singer's followers commented on her post, slamming her for standing by Penny's side. "Literally murdered another human being in cold blood," someone wrote. "But go off." "Just wear the white hood in public at this point, Ramona," a second user wrote. "Go for it." A third poster questioned what Singer was proud of, adding, "For getting away with murder?" "I always knew your politics were awful, but this is a new low," someone else wrote. Outsiders weren't the only ones voicing their opinion. Preston Mitchum, from the now-canceled "Summer House: Martha's Vineyard," also condemned Singer's "disgusting" behavior. "A picture going around where Ramona Singer is standing next to a Daniel Penny, a white man who killed a neurodiverse Black man, and was found 'not guilty,'" he wrote. "Dorinda is in the comments saying how beautiful she looks," he added. "Some white women get away with anything they want, no matter how disgusting. And networks like them and double their rates." Singer's post isn't the first time the reality star has been under fire for allegedly reckless or offensive behavior. In 2021, news broke that Bravo had conducted an internal investigation during season 13 of "RHONY" after a Black cast member, Eboni K. Williams, alleged that Singer used racist language. "There was a complaint made between Eboni K. Williams and Ramona Singer," a source told PEOPLE at the time. "Cast and members of the production were interviewed, but the investigation was closed after nothing substantial was found." Two years later, a Vanity Fair exposé mentioned the previous allegations that Singer used a racial slur on the set of "RHONY." Singer, of course, denied the claim in a statement to Page Six. However, while commenting on the story via text message, she used a variation of the N-word with a reporter. 'And the word I used was 'N-Word', not n-g…' she wrote. Singer was subsequently dropped from the network's massive fan convention, BravoCon, a decision Andy Cohen said was "the right call." Since the racial allegations against Singer surfaced in 2021, Bravo revamped the flagship version of "The Real Housewives of New York," casting a more diverse group of friends. However, after two seasons, it appears their apples have rotted. A recent report from May 9, 2025, indicated that the network was seemingly considering placing "RHONY" on indefinite hiatus after a season of low viewership and disengaged fans. The news also arrived days after Bravo announced renewals of several "Housewives" shows, excluding "RHONJ" and "New York." "We're trying to figure that show out," an insider said about the network's decision. "We want to figure it out. We think there's still life in it." The latest season of the New York iteration of the franchise featured Jenna Lyons, Brynn Whitfield, Ubah Hassan, Sai De Silva, Jessel Taank, Erin Lichy, and Racquel Chevremont.
