3 injured in attack on Dalit wedding procession in U.P.'s Amroha; caste abuse alleged
At least three people were injured on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) after a wedding procession by members of a Dalit community was pelted with stones and hit with rods and sticks in Rahdra village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Two daughters of Rampal, a local belonging to the Jatav (Dalit) community, were getting married. Of the two wedding processions on Monday, the first was from Hasanpur, and the other, from Moradabad, arrived later. The baraat (wedding procession) of Sonam Kumari, the older daughter, arrived from Moradabad. The incident took place during the second procession. 'On June 2, a wedding procession was being carried out around 5.30 p.m. Around 15-20 people from the same village, belonging to the Yadav community, forcefully entered the wedding procession and stopped us from dancing. When we opposed it, all the above people used casteist words and attacked us with sticks, rods, knives, and sharp-edged weapons to kill us. I, too, received an open injury on my head and many other small injuries,' Kanhaiya, the complainant, and a resident of Rahdra, said. He said many in the procession received knife injuries. 'The Yadavs said, 'how can people from our [Dalit] community take out wedding processions'?' Mr. Kanhaiya, who belongs to the Jatav community, alleged. Charges have been filed under Sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 109 (attempt to murder), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015). The case was registered at the Gajrala police station. A video purported to be of the chaotic scene has surfaced on social media. Police said they had to resort to mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order. In view of the heightened tensions, a police force has been deployed to maintain law and order. A senior police officer said that the incident had occurred because the road was narrow, loud music was playing in the background, and the people in the wedding procession could not provide space for the Yadav vehicles to pass. 'This led to an argument, which later turned into an altercation,' the officer said.

Relief for Arjun Rampal: Bombay HC quashes 'cryptic' non-bailable arrest warrant in 2019 tax evasion case
The Bombay High Court, on Thursday, quashed a non-bailable warrant issued against Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal in a 2019 tax evasion case, noting that the order was 'cryptic' and passed 'without application of mind.' Vacation judge Justice Advait M Sethna hearing the case, noted that the order against Arjun Rampal is 'a cryptic order which lacks application of mind,' which "would cause prejudice to the petitioner in the given the facts and circumstances as he would face an order of non bailable warrant in a case of bailable offence,' Bar and Bench reported. Arjun Rampal had approached the High Court seeking relief from a December 2019 order of the Mazgaon Magistrate, which ordered for the issue of a non-bailable warrant against him in a case initiated by the Income Tax (IT) Department. Arjun Rampal, known for his roles in movies such as Don (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007), and Raajneeti (2010), is facing prosecution under Section 276C(2) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, which pertains to willful attempts to evade tax payments. It carries a maximum sentence of three years, and is bailable in nature. The Income Tax Department had accused the actor of deliberately dodging a tax bill of ₹ 42.41 lakh for the assessment year 2016–17. According to Arjun Rampal however, upon receiving the notice, production giant Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd —which had hired him—stepped in and cleared ₹ 32.40 lakh on his behalf on May 13, 2018. Still, the IT Department wasn't convinced. On February 12, 2019, they froze Rampal's HDFC Bank account and issued a stern warning to the bank manager: no transactions were to go through, as per legal news agency Live Law. During the hearing at the Bombay High Court, Arjun Rampal argued that no bail conditions had been imposed earlier, and the warrant was a violation of procedure. Justice Advait Sethna found merit in Rampal's arguments, observing that the trial court's order was 'cryptic' and prejudicial. The High Court quashed the warrant, noting that the proceedings lacked legal justification given the bailable nature of the offence.

HC quashes non-bailable warrant issued against actor Arjun Rampal in 2019 tax evasion case
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has set aside a non-bailable warrant issued against actor Arjun Rampal in a 2019 tax evasion case, calling the lower court's order 'mechanical' and passed without proper application of mind. Rampal had approached the High Court seeking relief from a December 2019 order of the Mazgaon Magistrate, which directed the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him in a case initiated by the Income Tax (IT) Department. The department had accused the actor of wilfully evading advance tax of ₹42.41 lakh for the assessment year 2016–17. Through counsel Swapnil Ambure and advocate-on-record Ameet Naik and Madhu Gadodia of Naik & Naik, Rampal contended that the warrant was illegal and unjustified, as the offence was bailable and punishable by a maximum of three years in prison. According to the case documents, on May 13, 2018, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., which had contracted Rampal, informed him of a notice issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax. Zee paid ₹32.40 lakh on Rampal's behalf and notified him of the payment. Despite this, the IT department froze Rampal's HDFC Bank account on February 12, 2019, warning the bank manager of personal liability in case of any transactions. A show-cause notice followed on February 18, asking Rampal to explain why prosecution should not be initiated under the Income Tax Act. Rampal admitted that taxes were unpaid at the time of filing the return but cited financial difficulties, submitting cash flow statements from 2016 to 2018. His petition argued that while there was a delay in payment, there was no intent to evade, a legal requirement for prosecution. The magistrate's order initiating prosecution and issuing a non-bailable warrant was challenged in the High Court. Rampal argued that no bail conditions had been imposed earlier, and the warrant was a violation of procedure. Justice Advait Sethna, hearing the matter on the vacation bench, agreed with Rampal's arguments, observing that the trial court's order was 'cryptic' and prejudicial. The High Court quashed the warrant, noting that the proceedings lacked legal justification given the bailable nature of the offence. The matter is now listed for hearing on June 16, 2025.

Bombay HC quashes non-bailable warrant against Arjun Rampal in 2019 tax evasion case: Report
Arjun Rampal secured relief from the Bombay High Court, which overturned a non-bailable warrant issued in a 2019 tax evasion case. The court criticized the magistrate's order as lacking proper reasoning, especially considering the alleged offense is bailable. Rampal's lawyer asserts that the full tax amount was paid, albeit delayed, dismissing allegations of tax evasion. Arjun Rampal has received relief from the Bombay High Court , which quashed a non-bailable warrant issued against him in a 2019 tax evasion case . The court slammed the local magistrate's order as 'mechanical and cryptic,' with Vacation Judge Justice Advait Sethna noting on May 16 that it was 'contrary to law' and issued without proper consideration. NBW Challenged Over Procedural Lapses According to a report published in News18, Rampal had challenged the magistrate's April 9 order that issued a non-bailable warrant against him in a case filed by the Income Tax Department under Section 276C(2) of the Income Tax Act — a provision that deals with willful attempts to evade tax payments, penalties, or interest. In his plea, Rampal argued that his advocate had requested an exemption from appearance, which the magistrate denied before issuing the NBW. HC Points to Bailable Nature of Offence The Bombay High Court observed that the alleged offence against Arjun Rampal is bailable and carries a maximum sentence of three years, making the issuance of a non-bailable warrant inappropriate. Justice Advait Sethna criticised the magistrate's order as 'mechanical' and 'cryptic,' noting it lacked any reasoning or application of mind. The court further pointed out that issuing an NBW in a bailable offence, especially when Rampal's advocate was present in court, was prejudicial to the actor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Entrevista exclusiva: a verdade sobre o magnésio que ninguém te contou AlwaysFit Undo Arjun Rampal has also challenged the magistrate's notice issued in December 2019 in connection with the case.
