Jasper County sheriff gives safety reminders ahead of holiday

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. — Law enforcement is sharing some safety reminders for the holiday. Jasper County Sheriff Randee Kaiser tells us Memorial Day is one of the highest traffic volume weekends of the year, so it's important to pay extra close attention while on the road. Using electronic devices while driving is illegal in Missouri, and can carry fines of up to $500, or up to $1,000 if you cause a crash that results in serious injuries. Kaiser also warns anyone traveling this weekend to be careful about letting people know your home is vacant. 'Consider putting some lights on a timer, asking a neighbor to kind of keep an eye on things for you. You know we kind of sometimes forget that people who are up to no good, up to criminal activity, will kind of use these kinds of weekends to find homes to break into,' said Randee Kaiser, Jasper County Sheriff. A final reminder from Sheriff Kaiser, if you normally keep a firearm in a vehicle that will be unattended for long periods of time, bring the gun inside. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
