Haverstraw man charged with robbing Spring Valley store; officer hurt after scuffle
SPRING VALLEY - A 37-year-old Haverstraw man has been charged with a knife-point robbery of a convenience store and then fighting with an officer, who suffered minor injuries.
Edwin L. Pickering was arrested on Saturday, July 12, after the Open Every Day store at 29 S. Main St. was robbed of unreported proceeds at 4 p.m., police said Monday, July 14.
An officer responded to what originally was reported as a larceny but ascertained after talking with the cashier that a man brandished an orange box cutter-type knife, Detective Sgt. Randy DiPaolo said in a news release.
A short time later, a patrol officer saw Pickering on North Main Street, not far from the store and attempted to detain him, DiPaolo said.

Pickering ran from the officer and was caught after a chase, but continued to resist arrest, DiPaolo said.
During the struggle, the officer gained control of what turned out to be the box cutter supposedly used during the robbery, DiPaolo said. The officer eventually tossed the box cutter to the side but was injured in the scuffle as more officers arrived to help.
Pickering didn't claim any injuries and refused further evaluation or treatment by EMS, DiPaolo said.
Officers charged Pickering with felony counts of first-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Officers also charged him with misdemeanors of resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, as well as a disorderly conduct violation.
Pickering was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in New City after arraignment.
