Photographer finds award-winning art in the mundane

International award success for a Ranfurly photographer proves, yet again, the Maniototo is far greater than the sum of its parts. Landscape photographer Janyne Fletcher won three awards at the Australian Photographic Prize, an annual international competition which this year attracted more than 2500 entries from 21 countries. The competition was judged on digital entries rather than prints. Ms Fletcher said entering a digital competition was unusual for her as printing and framing her work was the icing on the cake in the process. Her two entries won three awards — international aerial photographer of the year, international open photographer of the year and international creative photographer of the year. The aerial photograph Winter's Gentle Hold, taken by drone, captured historical sheep yards in the snow. At first glance it could look like people lined up or embroidery. The image won the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers Iris award for highest-scoring print last year. It was likely anyone would drive past the yards and never notice them, Ms Fletcher said. Her other winning entry, Abandoned Cityscape, was composed of scrap metal photographed in the Maniototo which was then digitally transformed into a cityscape. She said she saw things differently to most people and was able to capture that vision, turning the mundane into art. Judges in the Australian competition were drawn from across the world and looked for the impact of the image and the narrative. However, being a landscape photographer meant her images did not have a strong narrative so the impact was even more important. Ms Fletcher said she started out in Cromwell as a traditional photographer but her partner's love of his Maniototo home taught her to see it through his eyes. She did not feel bound up in conventional expectations and loved the Maniototo community. "There is a freedom here to have my own take on things." Seeing things differently to others had been the strength of her 20-year career. "It's how I live and breathe. I see more than just the landscape. "It's quite abstract, that's me being me." Being able to make a living from being a photographer was something few people were able to do, she said. "I'm really privileged, that's all I do. It's unusual to be able to do that." Next week she will be a judge at the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers awards. While she could not judge her own work, she would be entering and was pleased it was a print, rather than digital, competition.

NPC Rugby: Where will the Ranfurly reside this summer?

The iconic log o' wood is perhaps the most prestigious and coveted prize in New Zealand Rugby besides the Web Ellis Trophy. Photo: Photosport Taranaki vs Northland 7.05pm Saturday, 2 August New Plymouth Live blog updates on RNZ It's provincial footy season and while there will be the usual questions of who the breakout stars will be and what former All Blacks can restake their claim, the prevailing interest will inevitably fall on a certain slab of English Oak and sterling silver. The iconic log o' wood Perhaps the most prestigious and coveted prize in New Zealand Rugby besides the Web Ellis Trophy. Introduced in 1904, the shield has sat centre stage for some of the greatest matches played on this country's fields. While fanfare surrounding Super Rugby has dwindled badly in the last decade, and the glory days of the NPC are long dead, the passion, pride and parochialism the shield evokes ensures that from Kaitaia to Bluff, the game's heart still beats. The holders The Taranaki Bulls brought an end to Tasman's historic inaugural Shield run in Nelson on 6 October, breaking Mako hearts with a 42-29 victory, They have since defended it twice against heartland opposition, 78-7 over King Country, and 97-0 over Thames Valley. Taranaki will have o see off five more challenges in 2025 in order to lock the shield away for Summer. It's a tough road to securing the shield for the Naki, but not beyond the realms. Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay will no doubt present formidable challenges in New Plymouth. The scenarios Okay, so let's assume no side will defend the shield this season, and it changes hands at every opportunity, where does it end up? All right, so that's a bit extreme, so let's look at a more likely potential outcome. If Taranaki beat Northland but lost to Waikato in round four, the Mooloos would have a relatively comfortable first defence against Southland and then a slightly tougher assignment against North Harbour before a final round defence against Northland. Waikato will end 2025 with three successful defences with the shield to reside in Hamilton . My pick Taranaki will see off Northland, and Waikato, but their reign will be ended at the hands of Bay of Plenty. The Steamers will hold it for less than a week though, with Hawke's Bay spoiling the party in Tauranga. The Magpies will prevail in the battle of the bays and would then need just one defence in order to lock away the shield post season, against Auckland, which they will do in dramatic fashion at McLean Park with a try on the siren. Tyrone herd sells Simmental bull to Scotland for £22,000

The Ranfurly Simmental herd based in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, has announced the private sale of its pedigree Simmental bull 'Ranfurly Rolo' to the Stronach family's Islavale Herd at Berryleys Farm in Keith, Banffshire in northern Scotland. The £22,000 deal includes the retention of semen and marks a new record sale price for the Dungannon-based herd, which was founded by David Hazelton more than 50 years ago. Rolo is the 24th Ranfurly bull to join a pedigree herd in the last 10 years. The £22,000 bull is sired by Banwy T-Rex and, at 13-months-of-age, the pedigree Simmental bull is the first calf bred from the Curaheen Bandit daughter, Ranfurly Weikel 45th VG87. The bull tested free of myostatin genes and boasts a yearling weight of 842kg, coupled with impressive Breedplan performance figures. Ranfurly Rolo's Breedplan performance figures: In the breed's top 1% for terminal production index (TPI) at +124; Has a self-replacing index (SRI) of +146; Milk (+14); Top 5% for eye muscle area (+6.1). Currently the Ranfurly 17-cow herd includes seven cows classified Excellent, eight VG, and two first-calf heifers awaiting classification. The Ranfurly herd has been built on the use of artificial insemination (AI) sires such as: Hillcrest Champion; Raceview King; Team Celtic; Samark Superman. Cow families include Weikel, Diana, Kleeb, Beauty, and Stella. The Weikel family, founded in 2003 with the impromptu purchase of South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd is the most successful female line at Ranfurly, according to the herd owners. Rolo's maternal great-grandam, South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd EX93 was a successful Simmental show winner, brood cow, and embryo donor. She has produced numerous Simmental and interbreed champions, both male and female. Her son, Ranfurly Formula One was supreme Stirling champion in 2015 and sold for 15,000gns. Her legacy has lived on through the generations at Ranfurly and within other pedigree herds. Rolo is the second Ranfurly bull to join the Islavale herd. The last bull to join the herd was Ranfurly Confederate EX94. This bull has produced sons to a top of 24,000gns. To date, Confederate has 562 progeny registered in 87 herds within the British Simmental Cattle Society herd book. He was the society's most popular sire in 2019 and 2020. The 200-cow Islavale herd purchased Ranfurly Beauty 13th for 7,000gns at the Ranfurly herd's third joint production sale in 2020. She has produced four heifer calves. Commenting on the private deal, Stewart Stronach said: 'We are delighted to have acquired another stock bull from the Ranfurly herd. 'Our most significant investment in Simmental bloodlines to date, Ranfurly Rolo is our type of bull, boasting fantastic breed character and presence. He is the complete package, wide from his plates right through to his shoulder, long and clean with a leg in every corner. 'Ranfurly Rolo really catches the eye and his pedigree is filled with excellent female lines. The herd has really come to the fore over the last few years, breeding our type of cattle.' 'We are hoping that Rolo does as well for us as our last Ranfurly stock bull, Confederate, whose first crop of Islavale calves included two bulls sold at Stirling to pedigree herds for 24,000gns and 16,000gns.' Stewart Stronach concluded: 'We believe Ranfurly Rolo is the foundation for the next chapter or our pedigree Simmental herd, and we thank the Hazelton family for allowing us to purchase him directly off-farm.' The bull is currently at the AI Services (NI) Ltd bull stud for semen collection and will be exported to Scotland in due course.
