‘Hopefully he'll be a Rangers player' – Russell Martin confirms interest in EPL left-back as he eyes Jefte replacement

He said: 'Jefte is maybe not going to be here moving forward because it's a good deal for him and the club. 'So we'll see what happens over the next couple of days with that. 'So we have to be ready to replace him, and we always have been ready. 'Jayden is a player we know from Southampton. 'He spent a year with us as a young boy, training every day, and he understands the work. 'He's a top talent who has played for England at all the youth levels. 'Brenton signed him for a lot of money for a teenager and he went on loan last year to play in the Championship, and did really well. 'So he's a player we know and like, and hopefully at some point he'll be a Rangers player.' Martin blamed the makeshift line-up for the goals conceded, adding: 'I think I saw some really good bits and some stuff that I didn't like. Inside Rangers-themed barbers 'But I don't think I expected anything different. 'With guys that just haven't played very much, when you make ten changes to the team, it's going to disrupt something. 'So my feeling is we get through, we score four goals, we should score more goals for sure.' Mikey Moore made his debut along with Thelo Aasgaard off the bench. Hamza Igamane also returned from injury - but Martin insists the striker is NOT ready to start against Brugge on Tuesday's Champions League play-off first-leg. He added: 'I think we have to look at his physical condition. He's literally just come back and played half an hour. 'It's a very different game so I'm not sure how long we would get from him from the start. "I really liked Hamza's energy when he came on. He can do things that other players can't. 'Sometimes he looks a bit mad. 3 Hamza Igamane came off the bench against Alloa Credit: Willie Vass 'So if we can get him to make decisions a bit more consistently, I think he'll really help us. 'I'm talking about when he tries to nutmeg the boy. 'But then his reaction to losing the ball was fantastic, so I don't mind it. 'Honestly, he wants to express himself, he wants to play. There's never a problem making a mistake as long as the reaction is really, really good.' Alloa boss Andy Graham added: 'My overriding emotion is pride. 'We dug in at times but we also played and passed the ball under pressure. 'I'm really pleased from that perspective. You're always going to think 'what if' when you get it to 3-2 with a couple of minutes to go. 'But I'm not sitting here saying we deserved to win the game.' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS secured their place in the Champions League play-off round with a less than convincing performance against Viktoria Plzen. Russell Martin was far from happy with the performance and says they must get better ahead of facing Club Brugge next Tuesday at Ibrox. Here's how the Rangers players rated after Tuesday's night display in the Czech Republic. JACK BUTLAND: Tried his best to calm the Gers team down amid Plzen pressure. Kicking was good and he made big saves in both halves as he kept up Euro form...8 JAMES TAVERNIER: Restored to the team for 100th European match at Rangers. Didn't get forward much and had difficult moments defensively but never panicked...6 NASSER DJIGA: Out to make amends for his red card against Dundee but this was a tricky night for the Wolves loan man. Booked and needs to be better on ball..5 JOHN SOUTTAR: Clever free-kick led to Rangers' goal as his quick thinking was rewarded. Couple of lapses when passing the ball and led inquest at Plzen winner...5 JEFTE: All over the place for the Plzen opener as Amar Memic raced in behind him too easily. Needs to sharpen up if he's going to be a regular...4 NICO RASKIN: Preferred to Joe Rothwell in midfield. Relished physical battle but struggled to gain control of the game in the first half. Much better after the break...7 MOHAMED DIOMANDE: Took a head knock early on but recovered and played a crucial role in the Rangers goal. Midfielder wasn't at his best but couldn't be faulted for application...6 Inside Rangers-themed barbers LYALL CAMERON: Midfielder was in the right place at the right time to steer in the equaliser. First Rangers goal and it was a huge one in the context of the tie...7 OLIVER ANTMAN: Bright on the ball early but starved of proper service down the right flank. Should have been used more but worked hard defensively for the team...6 CYRIEL DESSERS: Fluffed a volley early on and then had a penalty claim waved away after a barge in the box. Only lasted seven minutes of second half after knee injury...5 DJEIDI GASSAMA: Winger was the first-leg hero but never got into his stride in Plzen as they shackled him. Booked early on and didn't have any real impact in the final third...5 SUBS: DANILO (6) on for Dessers and claimed an assist for Cameron's goal. Link play was a lot better than the man he placed. JOE ROTHWELL (3) on for the tiring Diomande and lost Svetozar Markovic at goal. KIERAN DOWELL (3) replaced goal hero Cameron. OSCAR CORTES (2) final few minutes. NEDIM BAJRAMI (2) late runout. Rangers legend hails Rutherglen bar as 'great tribute' to Walter Smith

Former striker Gordon Smith cut the ribbon on the brand new Walter's Bar in Rutherglen earlier this week. Speaking outside of the Rangers-themed pub at 33 Queen Street, Gordon told crowds that it was 'a pleasure' to open the venue in memory of legendary former Rangers manager Walter Smith, who passed away in October 2021. Walter Smith (Image: Archives) He said: 'It is a pleasure to be asked along here today [July 1]. It's a fantastic event and a lovely place as well. 'They should have called it Smiths right enough, I wasn't the most famous Smith for Rangers, that's for sure. 'It's brilliant that we're calling it Walter's as it's a great tribute to Walter Smith, who was not only a fantastic person and a wonderful guy to know. 'I was very friendly with him for years, he was lovely with his family, but he was also a fantastic manager for Rangers, very successful. 'Everybody has the greatest respect for him, the gaffer. It is a pleasure to be invited along, and I'd just like to open this Walter's on behalf of the owners and in memory of Walter Smith.' Named after legendary Rangers manager Walter Smith, the bar has taken over the premises of the former Gorman's Bar at 33 Queen Street in Rutherglen. Unlike its predecessor, Walter's Bar promises to be more than a traditional pub as the owners hope it will become a new hub for Gers fans both on and off matchdays. It will also honour the Rangers great who managed the club on two separate occasions. Famous pictures and murals depicting Smith are dotted around the venue as well as at least one of his iconic quotes. The words "at Rangers you are never more than two defeats away from a crisis" can be seen written on the pub's ceiling in amongst a sea of blue. Unsurprisingly that's the colour that dominates the outside of the venue as well. Last month the official social media account for the bar teased next week's launch with a message that read: "Something's coming to Rutherglen… "Loud. Loyal. Unapologetically blue. Owners of the pub have confirmed there will be a supporters' bus which will run from the bar to Ibrox before and after home games.
