What Russell Martin said about Rangers after his loan

Martin has won the race for the Gers job and will soon put pen-to-paper and be unveiled by the club over the next 48 hours. The Rangers Review understands the former Scotland defender has agreed terms on a three-year deal after edging ahead of Davide Ancelotti as the favourite of club chiefs. The 39-year-old is no stranger to Rangers having spent half a season on loan at the tail end of the shambolic 2017/18 season, with Graeme Murty in charge at the time. It was a dark time for the club, finishing third in the Scottish top flight for a second season in a row and sacking Pedro Caixinha after months in the job. On a personal level, Martin did little to win fans over after joining on loan from Norwich in the January, making a total of 17 appearances at centre-back. But, speaking shortly afterwards, he insisted the club was "all over the place" at the time, which didn't help. However, he did speak positively about the size and demands of the club and insisted he loved his time. Martin admitted he didn't know the scale of the club until he came up from England - something that will stand him in better stead this time having had that experience. 'It's huge. You've got an idea but it's only when you go up there that you realise how big it is. 'Just walking around the streets, it's a giant of a football club with a great fan base. 'For me it was a bit wrong place, wrong time. 'The club was a bit all over the place and then a change of manager, who was an interim manager anyway (Graeme Murty). 'But I loved playing for a football club of that size and that support.'

How Russell Martin's tactical 'process' set British record

The 39-year-old has been recently linked with the vacant Rangers job. The Rangers Review revealed yesterday that while the club has yet to offer the role of head coach to any prospective appointee, the 39-year-old is the likelier candidate to replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox. Read more: Martin has previously taken charge of MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton. While at MK, his team played 56 consecutive passes in the lead up to a goal, a British record that was only beaten by Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in 2023. Appearing on The Rest Is Football podcast last month, Martin opened up on the move and the process involved in building a team to suit his style of play. "Everyone says we should've scored after 12, but we went backwards," he joked. "The boys were really proud of it. The narrative at the time was that we were in League One and the pitches weren't great. There was mistakes on the way to the process. I remember Sky Sports News showing one week we conceded a goal while playing out from the back at Portsmouth. "It became part of their story and their narrative, and it was a team story. "From the first day, I said, 'Listen, I'm your mate. I've been in a dressing room. It's really different for some of you, the transition, but I'll be the same'." Rangers' new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, said on Monday that the club aim to appoint a new head coach in the coming days.

Russell Martin's ex-teammate gives verdict on potential Rangers move

The Rangers Review revealed on Tuesday afternoon that while the club has yet to offer the role of head coach to any prospective appointee, the 39-year-old is the likelier candidate to replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox. Read more: Gunn played with Martin at Norwich City. They turned out alongside each other six times. Speaking ahead of Scotland's friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein this month, the keeper delivered his verdict on the potential appointment of his old skipper at Rangers. "He was a very intellectual guy," he said. "I went in there [Norwich] as a young goalkeeper and he helped me massively, even though he wasn't in the team every week and playing regularly, he was captain of the club and had good relationships with everyone in the dressing room. "Watching what he did at Southampton, he did incredibly well there and probably was unfortunate to lose his job there because it's always difficult for teams coming up from the Championship to compete with some of the Premier League teams. "I watch him now on TV, and the way he wants to play and his philosophy. I really hope that whatever he goes on to in his career is successful. "But I don't know if he's going to go to Rangers. Obviously, he had a spell there, so he knows the club a little bit, and I think it would be a really good thing for Rangers to be fair."

Dave King: Rangers players let Barry Ferguson down

The South Africa-based businessman, however, had no qualms with Ferguson's conduct on the touchline and was pleased with the former club legend's evident passion. Speaking to the Rangers Review, King said: "It was actually heart-warming to see someone on the sidelines that really was emotional and passionate. "You could just see in his face how much he wanted it." Read more: However, King felt that the players did not show the same enthusiasm. "The squad let him down. "As much as we'd probably all accept the fact that the quality of the squad has gone down, they're still better than they produced. "They should be better than they were." He further expressed his disappointment, saying: "Once you cross that white line and you're playing for the fans, I just think every player should be playing at his best. "It doesn't always happen, but the team just looked like they were trying sometimes. "It was really, really disappointing." King was, however, heartened by Ferguson's dedication. "I'd say I was heartened to at least see the level of passion and almost hurt in Barry's face at the way they were performing on the day. "It came down to a lack of backbone, I think, and just them not trying their heart out." It was confirmed shortly after his interim spell that Ferguson would not be getting the permanent Rangers job. The club is yet to announce who will take the reins at Ibrox this summer, with names like Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti linked to the position.

Davide Ancelotti to Rangers doubt dismissed amid Brazil talk

The Rangers Review reports that the Italian, 35, is considering his options amid interest from the Ibrox club. This morning, reports in Brazil claimed that Davide had opted against making a move into management, instead deciding he would join his dad Carlo's coaching staff with the Brazilian national team until after the 2026 World Cup. While he will join his father in charge of Brazil for their matches against Ecuador and Paraguay next month, it's believed Ancelotti Jnr. is still open to the idea of going it alone this summer. The 35-year-old has worked with the legendary boss at Everton, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. The final La Liga fixtures of the season will bring an end to Ancelotti's glittering career at the Bernabeu and see him move into international management. And that could still pave the way for his son to arrive in Glasgow and be tasked with delivering the Premiership title next term. It is believed that Davide's preference for the new campaign is to start his managerial career in his own right. If the right offer does not land on the table this summer, then Davide could yet opt to join Carlo in charge of the five-time World Champions. But Rangers remain firmly in the hunt to land Ancelotti this summer should all parties agree on a move that would see the highly-regarded coach lead the club in a new era as the Ibrox takeover deal edges closer.
