Sexual harassment at Durgavati varsity: CCTV footage ‘missing'

Bhopal: In a major twist in the case of alleged sexual harassment of a woman official of the Rani Durgavati Vishwa Vidyalaya (RDVV), Jabalpur, by its vice-chancellor, the inquiry committee constituted at the behest of the Madhya Pradesh high court was informed that the CCTV in the vice-chancellor's room was not working when the alleged incident took place. Therefore, the footage of the incident could not be provided. Earlier, the court was told by the Jabalpur administration that the CCTV footage of the vice-chancellor's room when the alleged incident took place was "safe". Following the new revelation, the bench of Justice Vishal Mishra ordered a probe by forensic or technical experts on whether the CCTV in the vice-chancellor's room was working that day or not. It further asked the registrar of RDVV, Jabalpur, to state on oath why the CCTV footage of that day was not State Women's Commission and the principal secretary of higher education had ordered a probe into the complaint of the woman official. However, when the probe didn't get underway, the woman moved the HC seeking direction that the inquiry be conducted into her allegation against the her petition, she said that the vice-chancellor called her into his chamber to discuss an issue on Nov 21, 2024. Other subordinate officials were also summoned. She was the only woman among them. In the presence of them all, the vice-chancellor used objectionable language towards her and made obscene gestures. She asked for CCTV footage of the day and time when the incident took place, but it was not given to her. The court had asked that the CCTV footage of the day when the incident took place should be kept the higher education department constituted a five-member committee to hold an inquiry into the woman's complaint. In one of the earlier hearings of the case, the court was informed that the CCTV footage of the day and time when the alleged incident took place was the hearing of the petition earlier this week, the petitioner told the court that CCTV footage was not provided to the inquiry committee as the camera was not working that day and there was no footage available. Following the hearing, the judge directed the district collector of Jabalpur to get the CCTV and DVR examined by a forensic or technical expert to find out when the CCTV was installed in the vice-chancellor's room, when it developed a snag, and why it was not working on the day of the incident. The court further asked the registrar of RDVV, Jabalpur, to submit an affidavit explaining why the CCTV footage of that day was not preserved.
