Children witnessed their parents' fatal plane crash at Middelburg Airfield
Aged just eight and 15, Quentin and Lezette Steyn's two daughters were at the Middelburg Airfield in Mpumalanga yesterday when their parents were killed in an aircraft crash. Middelburg Observer reports that the children were with their friends and other parents, who all saw the tragic crash unfold. Middelburg Observer spoke to Quentin's father, Raymond Steyn, who told the paper that his son was giving rides to people at the airfield. According to Raymond, for the last ride of the day, Quentin took Lezette as a passenger. He says that in an attempt to execute a 'fly-by', Quentin took his Rans S-10 Sakota close to the ground and attempted to twirl the plane to excite the crowd of onlookers. It is then alleged that one of the aircraft's wings grazed the terrain, causing the single-engine aircraft to smash into the ground. The aircraft then caught on fire. Raymond says his son was an experienced commercial and agricultural pilot, with over 6 000 flying hours logged. As such, the family believes the crash was an accident. A statement released by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) said Quentin and Lezette were 'declared dead by emergency services on arrival'. The AIID was on site this morning to collate evidence that will form part of a preliminary report that will be published on the South African Civil Aviation Authority's website in 30 days. 2 killed in aircraft crash at Middelburg Airfield identified
The identities of the two people killed in yesterday afternoon's tragic aircraft crash at Middelburg Airfield in Mpumalanga have been confirmed by members of the Middelburg Aero Club (MAC) as husband and wife Quentin and Lezette Steyn. Middelburg Observer spoke to Johan Cillié, the vice-chairman of MAC: 'Just last week on Monday, I spoke to Quentin for about an hour. He was a smart and pleasant man. Both he and his wife Lezette were very nice people, and I am heartbroken for their family for losing them both.' Cillié and the chairman of MAC, Cobus Peens, corroborated that Quentin was a former commercial airline pilot. 'I believe he was a skilled and experienced pilot and by no means a novice,' Peens says. Middelburg Observer also spoke to Debbie Minnie, a close friend of Lezette. 'She was a wonderful mother. Lezette endured a lot of hardship in her life, but she always came out on top.' Although not members of MAC, the couple had frequented the Middelburg Airfield since January and stored their Rans S-10 Sakota at the club's facilities. The crash, which occurred yesterday afternoon between the airfield's runway and the outer fencing, left the plane severely damaged from the impact and destroyed by the resulting flames. Peens says Mayday-SA, a 'group of volunteers offering a confidential and compassionate support network to South African aviation licence holders', has offered its services to the victims' family and everyone who attended the scene. The couple are survived by two young daughters. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak.
