PSG-Tottenham: Paris kicks off its season with no real preparation

A few years ago, Raphaël Varane, 2018 Fifa Club World Cup winner as part of the French national team, compared professional football to a "washing machine." The analogy would ring true for the players of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). To extend the metaphor, after the spin cycle – three weeks of vacation after their defeat (3-0) in the FIFA Club World Cup final match against Chelsea, on July 13 – coach Luis Enrique's players, still wrung out, began a new cycle on Wednesday, August 13, as they are set to face Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup, before returning to the Ligue 1, with a match against Nantes on July 17. Exactly one month before, the team experienced a bitter end to a dazzling season, whose high point was its Champions League final victory (5-0) over Inter Milan on May 31. The 2024-2025 season was, for the PSG's players, coach, and staff, as grueling as it was historic. "We are very tired. We played a lot of matches," said Gianluigi Donnarumma, the PSG's Italian goalkeeper – who was left out of the squad for Wednesday's match – on June 23, after the Club World Cup group stage.

Manchester United: Bryan Mbeumo takes number 19 at Old Trafford

Signed for €81 million, the Cameroonian will wear number 19 just as he did at Brentford. Bryan Mbeumo may have changed clubs, but he hasn't changed his number. The Cameroonian international officially joined Manchester United this Monday, July 21, 2025 and will don the number 19 shirt in his first season at Old Trafford. This number is especially significant for the former Brentford player. Bryan Mbeumo becomes the third summer signing for the Premier League club, following Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon. The Cameroonian was acquired from the Bees for a hefty €81 million (including bonuses) after more than forty days of negotiations. Mbeumo has signed a five-year contract with the Red Devils, with an option for an additional year. The English club also announced the new number for their 25-year-old forward. "Bryan Mbeumo has been given the number 19 at Manchester United. The Cameroonian international joins a prestigious list of players who have worn the number 19, with renowned defenders and attackers among its previous holders," Manchester United stated. The number 19 that Mbeumo inherits has a rich history at Old Trafford. Raphaël Varane was the last to wear it, from August 2021 until May 2024. Before him, Amad had it for a season, following in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford and other academy products like James Wilson and Danny Welbeck. Furthermore, the former Bees striker becomes only the second Cameroonian forward at Manchester United after Eric Djemba-Djemba, who also wore number 19. Beyond all that, Bryan Mbeumo keeps the number he previously wore at Brentford, Troyes, and with the Cameroon national team.
