Rasamny at ICAO 2025: Beirut Airport modernization reflects Lebanon's commitment to facilitation, sustainability, and secure governance

NNA - The ongoing modernization of Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport 'reflects Lebanon's commitment to enhancing passenger facilitation, improving the travel experience, and upgrading border management in a way that balances security with seamless mobility,' said Minister of Public Works and Transport Fayez Rasamny, reaffirming the country's deep engagement with the principles of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), particularly the 'No Country Left Behind' initiative. Rasamny made his remarks on Thursday during the ICAO Facilitation Conference 2025 (FALC 2025), held in the Qatari capital, Doha, with the participation of representatives from 190 countries. The Lebanese delegation included Director General of Civil Aviation Amin Jaber, Head of Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport Kamal Nassereddine, Head of Aviation Safety Omar Qaddouha, and the Minister's legal advisor Hadi Moussa. Rasamny noted that Lebanon's cooperation with ICAO has been instrumental in shaping its national aviation strategy, aligning regulatory frameworks with international standards, and advancing modernization efforts across the sector. The Minister pointed to the integration of biometric technologies, enhanced data exchange, and inter-agency coordination as core features of Lebanon's efforts to modernize air travel while ensuring safety and efficiency. In alignment with ICAO's sustainability goals, Rasamny said Lebanon was implementing the CORSIA emissions reduction mechanism and investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), as outlined in its 'State Action Plan' for decarbonization, which includes future investments in alternative fuels and environmentally friendly technologies. Rasamny further underscored Lebanon's ongoing efforts to strengthen aviation security and regulatory compliance, highlighting recent progress in biometric identification and harmonization with EU aviation regulations as essential to effective governance and restoring traveler confidence. Looking ahead, Rasamny emphasized the importance of international cooperation, especially in capacity-building for countries with limited resources. 'Such support is vital to managing increased air traffic, meeting global standards, and ensuring aviation remains a driver of economic development,' he said. 'Lebanon reaffirms its full support for ICAO's objectives, welcomes the Doha Declaration, and expresses readiness to continue working with all member states to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable global aviation sector,' Rasamny concluded. The conference is set to conclude with the issuance of the 'Doha Declaration on International Air Transport Facilitation,' aimed at guiding public policy and strengthening global commitment to a unified strategic framework for facilitation.

NNA - Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rasamny, and Minister of Culture, Dr. Ghassan Salame, on Friday paid a joint visit to the historic Mar Mikhael train station in Beirut to inspect a landmark restoration project funded by the Italian government. The initiative aims to rehabilitate the station's buildings, structures, and railcars while preserving their historical and cultural character. It also includes the creation of a green space within the station, envisioned as a vibrant venue for cultural, academic, and artistic events—aligned with the site's location, size, and anticipated role in the revival of Lebanon's railway system. The visit was attended by Italian Ambassador to Lebanon Fabrizio Marcelli, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Marco Rusconi, AICS Beirut Director Alessandra Piermattei, Director General of the Railway and Public Transport Authority Ziad Nasr, Director General of the Directorate General of Antiquities Sarkis Khoury, UNESCO Representative Costanza Farina, UN-Habitat Representative Hiroshi Takabayashi, Deputy UN-Habitat Director Tarek Assi, and AICS heritage expert George Sharabi. Minister Rasamny was briefed by Director General Ziad Nasr on the ongoing restoration of the station's perimeter wall adjacent to Charles Helou Highway. The Works Minister also held a meeting with staff at the General Directorate, where he reviewed major challenges facing Lebanon's public transport sector. Discussions reportedly highlighted recent achievements, most notably the relaunch of public buses along several routes in Beirut and its outskirts despite the difficult operating environment. Moreover, Rasamny announced that within two weeks, three new bus routes will be launched from Beirut to key destinations: north to Tripoli, south to Sidon, and east to Chtoura. He also praised the authority's accomplishments under challenging circumstances and urged continued efforts in the public interest. The Works Minister then pledged to provide necessary support to reinforce the authority's role in restoring public confidence in this vital sector, citing the broad economic, environmental, health, and social benefits of public transport. Meanwhile, the media office of the Minister of Culture emphasized that the visit reaffirmed the shared commitment to preserving and revitalizing the historic Mar Mikhael station, a symbol of Beirut's cultural and architectural heritage. It also highlighted Italy's leading role in supporting this ambitious initiative through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, reflecting the country's enduring commitment to safeguarding Lebanon's cultural legacy. =======R.H.

Rasamny to Al-Arabiya: Plan to boost supervision at Beirut Port underway

NNA - Public Works and Transport Minister, Fayez Rasamny, on Thursday affirmed in an interview with Al Arabiya that 'the security situation at the Port of Beirut was under close monitoring by the Lebanese Army, its intelligence services, and customs, within continuous coordination among the competent authorities.' Rasamny further explained that 'his latest visit to the port had been scheduled two weeks in advance, and it coincided with recent media allegations regarding security conditions, which prompted him to hold a meeting with the relevant security agencies, where he was assured that matters are under control.' Regarding responsibilities within the port, the Public Works Minister clarified that 'security oversight of container entry falls under the jurisdiction of customs, followed by additional inspections carried out by army intelligence, while the port administration is solely responsible for operational and logistical supervision.' In response to accusations that Hezbollah controls the port, Rasamny described such claims as 'dangerous and surprising,' questioning 'the timing of their emergence,' and stressing that 'all port personnel, from management to security services, are Lebanese and operate under the rule of law, and that any violation will be addressed according to proper legal procedures, with those responsible held accountable.' Rasamny then revealed 'a comprehensive plan that's underway to enhance security measures at the port, including the installation of advanced inspection equipment (scanners) similar to those used at Beirut Airport, the establishment of a dedicated port security unit in coordination with the competent authorities, and a legal framework under study to modernize port management,' affirming that 'he is personally overseeing the plan's implementation.' Separately, Rasamny expressed his optimism regarding the implementation of what is stated in the ministerial statement concerning Hezbollah's weapons, pointing to the government's commitment to what was declared by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister in this regard.
