Saints take cautious approach with 'insignificant' Chris Olave ankle injury
Don't look for Chris Olave to play in Sunday's first New Orleans Saints preseason game. The star wide receiver tweaked his ankle in Thursday's practice, and while he returned to finish the session after having it taped up the team is taking an abundance of caution with him. He was held out of Friday's practice session as a precaution, and didn't catch a pass until Jake Haener floated a throw out of bounds, where Olave snagged it on the sideline. He'll be back soon enough. Nick Underhill reported that the injury is "insignificant" and the team views him as "day to day." Unsurprisingly, Rashid Shaheed filled in well as the WR1. The speedster added about ten pounds of muscle this offseason and worked on expanding his route tree, and his hard work is paying off. He capped the first drive of the scrimmage with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Rattler. Shaheed is playing in a contract year, and if he can see it through, he could earn a lucrative contract in the spring. But back to Olave. Even if this is a minor injury, it's going to get overanalyzed given his injury history. He's dealt with a series of concussions in recent years and missed a lot of time. Hopefully he gets back out there as quickly as expected and plays a big role in a successful season for New Orleans. Saints WR Rashid Shaheed coming back with a vengeance after 2024 knee injury
While most people may find Rashid Shaheed a fun weapon for the New Orleans Saints offense, he has his sights set on earning even more respect in 2025 by winning that top wide receiver spot. "My role is just expanding and that's exactly what I want," said Shaheed when he spoke to the media earlier in training camp. One of the things that new Saints head coach Kellen Moore does well is creating plays for specific players. There are few guys in the league with a skillset that coaches want to experiment with than Shaheed. On paper, it is a match made in heaven. In his first three seasons, Shaheed had 94 catches for 1,556 yards with 10 touchdowns. He's even rushed 17 times for 123 yards and a score. That's also not mentioned the fact that he is an All-Pro second-teamer and earned a Pro Bowl nod for his work on special teams. The only issue with him is that he has a tough time staying on the field. He has bulked as well, adding about 10 pounds of muscle to get to 190. That could both open up his play style and help him stay on the field. "(This) is far from what I ever thought I'd be playing at, but I feel good. Feel like I'm moving great at this weight," Shaheed added later in the same press conference. 'It's all about longevity, and I feel like that weight is important.' Having Shaheed break out would be absolutely game-changing for this offense. No matter who the young quarterback that ends up with the starting job is, they need more threats to throw the ball to. Shaheed, Chris Olave and Brandin Cooks are a solid enough group in theory, but the truth is that none of them produced enough last year and missed major time due to injury. They are also lacking a true big-bodied threat, so they will need all of their stars to play up to their ability to have success. Though Olave is known as the top dog in that receiver room, there is plenty of room for Shaheed to break out and become wide receiver one. This chance could not come at a better time for the 26-year-old, as he is in the last season under contract after signing a one-year, $4.45 million extension last summer. A big year could result in a big payday.

Rashid Shaheed's 39-yard touchdown catch is the Saints Play of the Day
We've reached Day 39 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means Rashid Shaheed's 39-yard touchdown catch is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Shaheed came through in a clutch moment for the Saints during their 2023 regular season finale with the Atlanta Falcons, extending New Orleans' lead with playoff implications (and an NFC South title) on the line. You can see the play for yourself right here. Derek Carr faked a handoff to running back Kendre Miller and turned to survey the field; the play action fake gave him time and space to work with, and he found Shaheed streaking to the end zone with a couple of hapless Falcons in pursuit. Shaheed correctly read the angle on Carr's throw and leaped vertically to secure the ball. Atlanta defensive backs Jessie Bates III and Mike Hughes could only watch as Shaheed came down with the scoring catch. Their teammate Richie Grant was a heartbeat too late to jump and meet Shaheed at the catch point. New Orleans won this one in a blowout, and it wasn't close; they built a 41-17 lead before going to pour it on in the final minute with a controversial Jamaal Williams touchdown run from the Atlanta 1-yard line. It was enough to finish the season at 9-8, but the Saints got no help from the Carolina Panthers, whose pathetic effort led to a 9-0 loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay won the division title and upset the visiting Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round, advancing even further in the playoffs. If Carolina had found a backbone, maybe it would've been the Saints advancing instead. Who knows? That small success might've bought Dennis Allen a little more time as their head coach.

Rashid Shaheed's season-opening 59-yard TD is the Saints Play of the Day
Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' 2025 season opener is on Day 59, which means this 59-yard yard touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Rashid Shaheed is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. You can see it for yourself right here. This was the Saints' opening score of the 2024 season. They got off to a hot start against the Carolina Panthers -- Carr took the snap out of the shotgun on 3rd and 4, surveyed the field, and got the throw off under pressure to find Shaheed around the Panthers' 14-yard line. The receiver caught the ball and stumbled untouched into the end zone, diving forwards for a score. Advertisement And it wasn't even close after Shaheed set the tone. New Orleans scored 30 unanswered points before the Panthers got on the board with a field goal to close out the first half; the Saints piled on 379 yards of offense to win the afternoon 47-10. The passing game was efficient (Carr completed 19 of 23 passes for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns, taking only one sack) while the rushing attack fulfilled a lot of the promise it had built up through the offseason, rumbling for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns off of 37 attempts. It's a shame the Saints couldn't keep this momentum going once injuries wracked the team, but for a couple of weeks they played like the best team in the league. NFL owners to vote on 2028 Olympics flag football participation; which Saints should play?
The 2028 Olympics are still rather far away, and despite that, it will likely be upon us sooner rather than later. This raises the question that has been on many NFL fans' minds ever since flag football was announced: could they see their favorite players on an international scale playing against other nations' best? This has been discussed in recent months as the league considers its options and what they may look to do. A recent report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network provides some clarity, reporting that NFL owners will be discussing a resolution to the process at this week's annual league meetings, and this could allow players in the league to participate in the 2028 Olympics. The rules are similar to those of normal American football, the key difference being that it is a five-on-five game being played, with 12 total players on each team. With the Metro Select Saints winning back-to-back boys 15U championships in a row, the New Orleans Saints have some local support to send their own players to the Olympics. Advertisement So, could the Saints send anyone realistically among the talent pool of NFL players? There are two players who immediately come to mind on the offensive side of the ball, and with the positional differences being minimal given how few players are on the field, it is all about athletic abilities and being able to do their job well. Rashid Shaheed would be the most obvious choice, as speed kills, and having a player who can move at the raw pace he does is a killer in any version of the sport. There are few in the NFL who can keep up with him on defense, if any, so pairing him up with the best of the best in the American market against the rest of the world is bound to pan out well. Additionally, one that may work out well is Alvin Kamara, even despite the lack of running game in many cases. His talents can be displayed in any version of the sport as well, and his elusiveness makes him an asset in a sport where keeping your flags away from opponents is paramount. Given his ability to catch the ball like a wide receiver anyway, that would not be any concern for the offense he is put in. It will be intriguing to see how this situation resolves itself in the coming days, and if the NFL is willing to allow players from the league to go to the Olympics and compete for their country.
