Dharwad celebrates Environment Day

1 2 Dharwad: Planting of saplings, weeding out plastic and other waste materials dumped into the local tanks, special talks on conservation of environment, oath to contain plastic menace, drawing and essay competition on increasing the green cover marked the World Environment Day programmes organised by government departments, educational institutions and various other organisations in Dharwad on Thursday. The students of Rastrotthana Vidya Kendra of Dharwad prepared seed balls, vermicompost and planted saplings. Video screening on the importance of protection of the environment, soa ng by MK Saikumar and a lecture by Indranila Yaligar were the highlights. Principal Anita Rai also spoke. At the SDM University's Physiotherapy - Nursing College Campus, the day was celebrated under the theme 'Putting an end to Plastic Pollution. Dr Mukayyaswami V Kalasuramath, Prof of general medicine was the chief guest. Saplings were planted on the occasion. The NSS Unit of SDM RIBS observed the world environment day at the Govt Higher Primary School at Ashraya Colony, Sattur. NSS volunteers cleaned the school campus, painted the walls of the school and asked the students to keep the campus clean. Over 1,500 students of JSS SM Central School took out a rally as part of World Environment Day celebration. They presented skits and dances highlighting the importance of protection of the environment. Principal Sadhana led the rally. Saplings were planted at all the institutions of KE Board, Maratha Vidya Prasaraka Sangha, Vanita Seva Samaj, Janata Shikshana Samiti, Basel Mission, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Karnatak University, University of Agricultural Sciences, IIT Dharwad and Leelavati Charantimath Public School. Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu planted saplings at the District Bharat Scouts and Guides Association and emphasised the need to create awareness among the children about the need to protect the environment for their better future. The children should be taught to love nature so that they will be able to protect it and enjoy a pollution-free, healthy, resourceful life, she said.
