‘Unity Among Doctors Gives Strength to Serve Society'

1 2 Nagpur: Unity among doctors is the strength that helps us safeguard our profession, ensure ethical practice, and serve society better, said Dr Ravi Chavan, dean of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMCH), as he addressed the gathering during the Doctors' Day celebrations organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nagpur Branch, on Tuesday. The event was held at the IMA Hall, North Ambazari Road, to mark National Doctors' Day, observed in memory of Bharat Ratna Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. This year's theme, 'Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?', highlighted the emotional and mental health challenges faced by healthcare professionals and called for greater empathy and support from society. Dr Rajesh Sawarbandhe, president of IMA Nagpur, stressed the importance of acknowledging doctors not just for their clinical service but also for their silent battles. "While the nation rightly looks to doctors as saviours, it's crucial for society to also understand the invisible struggles faced by the medical fraternity. Today is about honouring that dedication and also about reminding ourselves that doctors, too, are human beings who need care and compassion," he said. Senior doctors who dedicated decades of service to the medical field and community welfare were also felicitated on occasion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dieses Hörgerät kann 2025 alles verändern Gutes Hören Undo Those honoured included Dr Prashant Rahate, Dr Vasant Khalatkar, Dr Chandrashekhar Gillurkar, Dr Mahendra Sawarkar, Dr Harish Chandak, Dr Pratibha Dawande, Dr Mala Kamble, Dr Rafat Khan, Dr Vithalrao Dange, and Dr Harish Kedia. Worrying rise in sickle cell, thalassemia cases in Nagpur

Nagpur: A joint screening drive conducted by Government Medical College (GMCH) and Mayo Hospital in the city revealed that a large number of people are either suffering from or carrying genes for sickle cell disease and thalaessemia. Out of 1,34,408 people tested, 3.58% (4,817 people) were found to be carriers of sickle cell disease, meaning they have the gene but may not show symptoms. A total of 267 people were diagnosed as sickle cell patients, while 216 people were found to be suffering from thalaessemia, another inherited blood disorder. These numbers highlight a growing threat of genetic blood disorders in the region. According to the 2011 census, India had around 1.8 crore sickle cell carriers and 14 lakh patients. In Maharashtra alone, there were over 2 lakh carriers and 16,674 patients at that time. Experts believe that these numbers have increased significantly over the past 13 years. To tackle the silent spread of these hereditary diseases — which pass from parents to children — the govt has taken a special initiative. A mass screening campaign was carried out with the support of various departments, including the education department, zilla parishad, district health office, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, and others. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! "The data collected through this extensive campaign clearly shows that sickle cell and thalassemia are serious concerns in Nagpur district. We need to scale up both screening and awareness to control the spread of these inherited disorders. The positive support from CM Devendra Fadnavis is encouraging, and more community participation will help us make a lasting impact," said Dr Ravi Chavan, dean, Mayo Hospital. Sickle cell disease and thalaessemia are both genetic blood disorders that can cause lifelong health problems if not identified early. People may carry the gene without knowing it. If two carriers marry, there's a high risk their child would suffer from the disease. Hence, early screening, awareness, and proper planning are crucial to prevent future cases.
