Meta working on bringing face recognition to its AI glasses

Meta is reportedly planning to add a new facial recognition feature to its AI-powered smart glasses that it has created in collaboration with Ray-Ban. According to a report from The Information, the company has internally discussed the idea of adding new software to future versions of its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses that would allow users to identify people around them by scanning their feature, dubbed "super sensing" within Meta, is said to build upon the existing live AI features in the glasses. While the current models of Meta AI glasses can only power AI features for around 30 minutes due to battery limitations, the next-generation Meta glasses — expected as early as 2026 — could offer longer battery life, allowing users to utilise these AI features for longer duration. Now this feature may again bring Meta face-to-face with controversy. The report suggests that while the users will be able to switch facial recognition on or off, bystanders will have no indication that they are being scanned. This raises privacy concerns. The report also notes that Meta has also internally debated whether the existing camera indicator — an LED light that blinks when the camera is active — should be disabled during facial recognition Currently, the Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses come with an LED indicator to alert nearby individuals that the camera is recording. This feature was likely added in response to previous privacy concerns with wearable tech — most notably the backlash against Google Glass over a decade ago. However, if Meta plans to introduce "super sensing" mode without triggering the LED light, it could again raise concerns about privacy and report mentions that Meta is not planning to limit facial recognition solely to smart glasses. The company is reportedly considering integrating this technology into other wearable devices, such as AI-powered earphones equipped with cameras. This suggests Meta has broader ambitions to create a suite of smart wearables capable of continuously scanning and interpreting a user's surroundings in real time, something previously seen only in science Meta has confirmed that, in collaboration with Ray-Ban, it will soon launch its AI-powered smart glasses in India. These glasses, offering features such as live translation, music control, and messaging, are expected to be available in the coming months. While an official launch date and pricing have not yet been revealed, the glasses are anticipated to release in India alongside markets like Mexico and the UAE. In the US, they are priced from $299 (roughly Rs 25,000). In India, the price could be set around Rs 35,000, considering the taxes.
