Razman hopes Perak exco man not given ‘immunity' in caricature probe
Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria (left) has demanded that DAP's Woo Kah Leong apologise over a caricature post deemed offensive. PETALING JAYA: Perak opposition leader Razman Zakaria has urged authorities not to grant any 'immunity' to state executive councillor Woo Kah Leong, who is under police investigation over a social media post featuring an allegedly offensive caricature of him. The Gunong Semanggol assemblyman said he had demanded an apology from Woo, but that none was forthcoming. Instead, he said DAP continued to defend its youth chief's actions. He warned that any failure to act could erode public support for the state government led by Umno and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'To the Umno-led state government leaders in Perak, like it or not, this is the quality of an exco member from DAP,' he said in a statement. 'If you have any honour, just resign from the exco post because the people are always watching and will judge what happens as a result of such irresponsible behaviour. 'It's not impossible that the people will reject you over this issue.' Police recorded Woo's statement yesterday in connection with the investigation into the allegedly provocative social media post. Woo had posted the caricature on Facebook alongside a statement in April. It depicted Razman as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope, labelling the Perak PAS chief as 'raja fitnah' ('the king of slander'). This was believed to be in reference to the various instances in which Razman had apologised to PH leaders over various accusations he had made against them. The PAS man has demanded that Woo apologise openly for the 'provocative' posting. However, Woo has stood by his Facebook post, saying it was not a personal attack but satire. He also said the police report stifled freedom of speech. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cops seize Perak exco man's phone over caricature of PAS leader
DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is being investigated for improper use of network facilities and criminal defamation. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A Perak executive councillor's phone and SIM card have been confiscated by police in connection with a probe into an allegedly offensive caricature of state opposition leader Razman Zakaria of PAS. DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is being investigated for improper use of network facilities under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and criminal defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code, according to his lawyer, Syahredzan Johan. Syahredzan said the police report was likely made by one of Razman's aides in Gerik. 'Woo has given his statement to the police and we will give our fullest cooperation,' he told FMT. Woo had posted the caricature on Facebook alongside a statement in April. It depicted Razman as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope, while labelling the Perak PAS chief as 'raja fitnah' ('king of slander'). This is believed to be in reference to the various instances Razman had apologised to multiple Pakatan Harapan leaders over various accusations he made against them. The PAS man has since demanded that Woo apologise openly for the 'provocative' posting. In a statement, Woo stood by his Facebook post by saying it was not a personal attack but satire. He also said the police report stifled freedom of speech. Woo, the Perak domestic trade executive councillor, said it was his duty to challenge false rhetoric, even through satire. 'Freedom of expression must include the freedom to offend. Satire is a legitimate and peaceful form of political critique in any democracy,' said the Pasir Bedamar assemblyman.

[UPDATED] Perak assembly suspends state opposition leader Razman for 6 months
IPOH: The Perak State Legislative Assembly today passed a motion to suspend opposition leader Razman Zakaria from attending assembly sessions for six months, effective immediately. The motion, tabled by Ong Boon Piow (PH–Bercham) and seconded by Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya (BN–Rungkup), was adopted during today's sitting of the State Assembly. Razman, who is also the Gunung Semanggol assemblyman, was referred to the State Assembly's Rights and Privileges Committee on Dec 4 last year, following allegations that he made a false statement during a previous sitting. During the Dec 4 sitting, Astaka assemblyman Jason Ng Thien Yeong told the assembly that Razman had made baseless accusations, linking Kepayang assemblyman Nga Kor Ming and Pasir Bedamar assemblyman Woo Kah Leong to an incident where a Chinese flag was flown in Teluk Intan. Razman was alleged to have made a false statement on Dec 2. The motion to endorse the committee's report was approved after the majority of assemblymen present voted in favour. The decision was announced by State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid. Following the adoption of the suspension motion today, Speaker Mohammad Zahir ordered Razman to leave the House immediately. "Once a YB (Yang Berhormat) has been suspended and the decision is effective immediately, the Gunung Semanggol assemblyman is no longer part of this House. "Therefore, the Honourable Member has no rights in the House. I now request the Honourable Member to vacate the House," he said. However, before exiting the chamber, Razman stood and addressed the assembly, expressing his gratitude and delivering parting remarks despite being interrupted. "I would like to thank the Speaker, Kota Tampan (Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad), my colleagues in the government and the opposition. I wish to convey my utmost gratitude for His Majesty's royal address, and I take this opportunity to wish everyone Selamat Hari Raya. "I apologise for any mistakes and extend encouragement to my fellow lawmakers. Let us continue our struggle. As legislators, we must not defend any breaches of the law. "Thank you, Speaker, for allowing me this opportunity. Let us continue to uphold the spirit of serving the people and supporting the government," he said. Early last month, it was reported that Razman had been temporarily relieved of his duties as Perak Pas chairman. It is understood that the decision was made by the party's central leadership following several issues, including a recent controversy linking Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh to YTL Corporation Berhad.
