Shelby Houlihan set for return to Drake, competing in Grand Blue Mile

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCAU) – After being on the outside looking in during the Drake Relays the past four years, Sioux City native Shelby Houlihan will be back in Iowa competing in tomorrow night's Grand Blue Mile. Houlihan has made the most of her first few races following her four-year ban, returning from her suspension in January with a victory at the Razorback Invitational in Arkansas – running a meet record 8:31.56. In March, the U.S. 1500m record holder claimed silver at the world indoor championships in China. Now, Houlihan is excited to return to racing in Iowa with a new point of view. 'I think coming in now I get to go back to Iowa and I get to race, so coming in with that perspective with everything that I've gone through and what going home means to me, it's pretty special. Out of all the tracks that I've raced on throughout my career, I think Drake is still my favorite one, so I'm really excited about it,' Houlihan said. Houlihan is part of an intriguing field that includes former Team USA Olympian and Iowa native Karissa Schweizer that looks to take down one of the oldest records at the Drake Relays, a mile time of 4:40.02 set by 5x Olympian Francie Larrieu in 1975. The Grand Blue Mile is set to take place tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Des Moines. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sioux City native and Olympian Shelby Houlihan prepares for first race following four-year ban

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Sioux City native and Olympian Shelby Houlihan is returning to action this Saturday at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., her first race following a four-year ban from track and field that ended on January 13th. Houlihan, who is the American record holder in the 1,500 meter event, has been training in Arizona ahead of her return to the track. The 2016 Olympian also announced her return to the Drake Relays in April, a place where she's won eight times. As demanding of a sport track and field is, it was the mental battle for Houlihan that served to be the biggest obstacle. Despite her path to reinstatement and a return to competition being so difficult, it was her love of the sport that prevented her from walking away. 'I felt like if I walked away from the sport, I might look back and wonder, like, what if I would have kept going? And like, what could that have looked like? I don't really want to live life like that and so I was like, I'm at least going to find out.' Houlihan said. 'So when the opportunity presented itself to run at Drake, I was all for it. I've never run the Grand Blue Mile, so I'm actually really excited to do that for the first time. I was home and I've felt very supported and loved over the last four years and even before that by people at home. So I'm excited to kind of come back and and be in that atmosphere again.' Houlihan will run the 3,000 meter race on Saturday in Arkansas and will race for a spot on Team USA at the Grand Blue Mile at the Drake Relays on April 22nd. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
