A recall of supplemental shakes over listeria fears is linked to 12 deaths

A twelfth person has died in connection to a multi-state listeria outbreak linked to frozen supplemental shakes served primarily in long-term care facilities. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall earlier this week of the frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms and distributed by Lyons Magnus, due to a potential contamination of listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious infections. The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with local authorities, are now investigating illness associated with recalled products. As of Feb.24, a total of 38 people across 21 states have been affected with the strain connected to this outbreak. Among those with available health information, 37 have been hospitalized, and 12 have died. The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the U.S. and sold in 4 oz cartons under the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco (SYY) Imperial brands in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. The FDA recommended that any distributors and food service providers — including hospitals and long-term care facilities — that have purchased the affected shakes should not sell or serve them. Additionally, any surfaces or containers that touched the recalled shakes must be carefully cleaned and sanitized. 'Lyons Magnus' utmost concern is protecting consumers. As soon as Lyons Magnus learned of the issue, we took immediate action to halt the purchase of all products from the affected Prairie Farms facility, notify customers, and ensure that impacted products were removed from distribution nationally,' the company said in statement. Prairie Farms did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Quartz. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious listeriosis infections in young children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems. The FDA warned that listeria infections could cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Even among healthy people, a listeria infection can lead to symptoms including high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. An estimated 1,600 people in the U.S. get listeriosis every year, with about 260 annual fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Listeria outbreak linked to 12 deaths as nutritional shakes recalled

Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A listeria outbreak linked to frozen nutritional milkshakes is to blame for 12 deaths and dozens of hospitalizations, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed Monday following an investigation that spanned seven years. The FDA confirmed, along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that 38 people across 21 states were sickened by the Lyons Magnus and Sysco Imperial products. On Saturday, Lyons Magnus issued a voluntary recall of 4 oz. packs of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. The recall comes after Indiana manufacturer Prairie Farms issued its own recall. "As soon as Lyons Magnus learned of the issue, it took immediate action to halt the purchase of all products from the affected Prairie Farms facility, notify customers and ensure that impacted products were removed from distribution nationally," the company said in a statement. The CDC began investigating the listeria outbreak in long-term care facilities in 2018, but said Monday it was unable to determine a cause until now. The same outbreak was investigated again in 2021 and 2023. After six new cases were reported in October, the investigation was reopened. The strain of bacteria was found in Prairie Farms samples this month. Most of the people impacted by the listeria outbreak were living in long-term care facilities or were hospitalized before becoming sick. The 17 shake products, which include ReadyCare and Imperial frozen shakes in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and banana with "best buy" dates, are listed on the FDA's recall website. Anyone in possession of a recalled shake should toss it and all areas that may have come into contact with the product should be thoroughly cleaned. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious infections in children, pregnant women, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria is the third leading cause of death for foodborne illness in the United States. It kills approximately 260 people a year. The 12 people who died after contracting listeria linked to the shakes were from California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. "Sysco expresses our most sincere condolences to those affected by this outbreak and their families," the company said. "Food safety is and will continue to be our top priority, and our focus will always be on improving these programs that protect our customers and our communities from foodborne illnesses."

What you need to know about a deadly listeria outbreak linked to recalled shakes

An ongoing listeria outbreak credited with 11 deaths is linked to frozen supplemental shakes. Here's what you should know: What shakes have been recalled and where did they go? The shakes, sold in 4-ounce cartons under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, were made by Prairie Farms Dairy at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, facility. ReadyCare flavors are vanilla, chocolate and strawberry (Regular, No sugar added and Plus varieties of each) and strawberry banana, no sugar added. Imperial flavors are the same, but came only in regular and Plus. The best-by dates were from 02/21/2025 through 02/21/2026. If you or your employer has the recalled shakes, return them to the seller for a refund or, at least, throw them deep into the garbage. Direct questions to Lyons Magnus via the company website or by emailing frozenshakerecall@ Lyons Magnus states in its recall notice that 'the recalled products were distributed primarily to long-term care facilities and were not available for retail sale,' which falls in both the Good News and Bad News columns. Good News: They weren't available for sale to the general public. Bad News: People in long-term care facilities are among the most likely to be most damaged by listeria. What is listeria? Listeria infects about 1,600 people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, killing about 260 of those people. People ages 65 or older, children 5 years old and younger, pregnant women and people with damaged immune systems are most likely to get the worst from listeria. It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Most healthy people suffer headaches, fever, muscle stiffness, possibly seizures, confusion and loss of balance. What about the outbreak? There's no update on this outbreak on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, which usually provides the most detailed breakdown (people sickened, hospitalizations, ill people by state, investigation details) of outbreaks. The FDA update says the CDC places the start of the outbreak in 2018 with 20 known illnesses and counting in 2024 and 2025. As of Friday, the illness count stands at 38 people, 37 of whom were hospitalized and 11 of whom died. Those 38 people came from Florida, California, North Carolina, Texas, Missouri, Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia. 'Of the 38 people for whom information is available, 34 reported living in long-term care facilities or were hospitalized prior to becoming sick,' the FDA said. 'Records reviewed from facilities indicated nutritional shakes were available to residents.'
