Heritage Foundation founder Edwin Feulner dies at 83
Edwin Feulner, founder and longtime president of the influential U.S. conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, has died, the foundation announced in a statement. He was 83. Feulner, a Chicago-born political scientist, founded Heritage in 1973 and became its president in 1977, a position he held until 2013. Republican President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Citizens Medal in 1989. The foundation's statement, released on July 18, did not specify when Feulner died or the cause. Current Heritage president Kevin Roberts and Board of Trustees Chairman Barb Van Andel-Gaby, wrote in a joint statement that Feulner founded Heritage to plant "a flag for truth in a town too often seduced by power." The conservative movement has lost one of its true giants and I have lost a mentor and cherished friend. Ed Feulner was many things: scholar, strategist, counselor to presidents, but above all, he was a great man and an American statesman who devoted his life to the defense of our nation's first principles. Ed believed that this nation wasn't only exceptional, but good—and that its future would rise or fall on our fidelity to timeless truths. In an age of cynicism, Ed reminded us that one man with courage and conviction can still shape the course of human history, just as he did. As the founder of the Heritage Foundation, Ed was a leading voice of conservatism for more than 50 years. Under his leadership, Heritage became both a center for scholarship and a powerhouse of strategic influence. I first met him in 1991, when Heritage launched an effort to strengthen public policy leadership in the states. That initiative would later give rise to the State Policy Network. At the time, I was a young lawyer in Indiana, freshly inspired by the Reagan Revolution.

The death of Ed Feulner, the co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, has sparked an outpouring of support from Republican lawmakers and leaders. Feulner helped start the Heritage Foundation in 1973 and served as its president for nearly 40 years. 'In the passing of Dr. Ed Feulner, the conservative movement has lost one of its true giants, and I have lost a mentor and cherished friend,' former Vice President Mike Pence wrote on the social media platform X. 'Ed simply understood that free markets, strong families and a robust national defense allow America to lead the world not just with strength, but by example.' The foundation is most recently known for leading Project 2025, the blueprint that has widely influenced the Trump administration's consolidation of power and aggressive pursuit of right-wing policies. Feulner also helped found the Republican Study Committee, the party's conservative caucus. 'Ed Feulner was one of the architects who built the conservative movement in this country,' Rep.
