REAL I.D. enforcement at the Columbus Airport
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says they have not experienced many issues in the first week of enforcement. However, they do expect to see a spike very soon. Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson says the lack of issues is due to many Georgia residents already having a compliant I.D. . The Georgia Department of Drivers Services says licenses issued after 2012 are Real I.D. compliant. 'It's just a handful of folks that maybe are just moving to Georgia and haven't gotten their I.D's yet,' Howell says. Due to the size of the Columbus Airport, if someone's I.D. is not Real I.D. complaint it is communicated to that individual. This differs from bigger airports as those without a complaint identification will receive a red card with a QR code that shares all acceptable forms of I.D. No matter the size of the airport, Howell says once someone has been identified as non-compliant, they are then separated and subject to additional screenings. 'We've been recommending those folks that don't have their real I.D. or one of the other accepted forms to get to the airport a bit earlier than our usual two hours ahead of their departure time,' Howell shares. TSA says they expect to see an increase in delay time and those without a Real I.D. or other acceptable form of identification. 'The potential for that to happen grows when you have additional volume and a lot more additional infrequent travelers planned over the Memorial Day Weekend and those other holiday weekends in the Summer,' Howell explains. He recommends getting the Real I.D. sooner than later. 'The whole purpose behind it is really to raise security and it goes right in line with everything else we're doing at security checkpoints,' Howell says. 'We want to make sure the person that's presenting that I.D. is who they're supposed to be and that they're getting screened at the most state of the art technology that we've got available at security checkpoints.' One week until the Real ID enforcement
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – In one week, everyone across the nation will need to have their Real I.D. if they want to fly or enter federal buildings, military bases and other secure facilities. While the country prepares for the approaching May 7th deadline, wait times inside DMV's have been skyrocketing across the country. And right here at home, the Roanoke Valley DMV has had lines wrapping around the building for the last couple of weeks. 'I think the early bird gets the worm, and I'm early,' said Brenda Bowman, who got to the d-m-v an hour before it opened at 8 a.m. on Monday, being one of the first ones there. She tells WFXR she already had a Real I.D., but needs to get it renewed since she flies to see her family a lot. 'The wait time has been terrible. This is my second time trying to get to the I.D.. I went to a DMV 'to go' thing and it didn't work out as planned. So now I'm here at the crack of dawn,' said Bowman. The DMV says if you're getting a Real I.D., setting up an appointment and beginning the process online is best. Can you fly without a REAL ID after the May deadline? 'You'll need to bring one proof of identity to proof of Virginia residency, so that could be a utility bill or your driver's license with your current address. You also need to show one proof of legal presence. So it could be your Passport or your birth certificate. Remember your social security number. Also, if your name appears differently on your documents, bring proof that your name has changed,' said Camilia Barco, the media liaison for Virginia's DMV. The cost of a Real I.D. is $10, along with the cost of a new I.D. Virginians do have a choice of getting a Real I.D. however: 'Anyone planning domestic air travel or if they want to access a federal facility like the federal courthouse, they will need a real I.D. beginning May 7th, 2025,' said Barco, 'If you don't have a Real I.D., you'll need to provide another federally accepted document, and that can include a U.S. Passport.' The DMV does say if you are unable to get the Real I.D. before the deadline, they will continue to issue them after May 7th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. NCDOT responds to concerns of long DMV wait times
WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT)– Communities across the state are noticing longer lines and longer wait times at the local DMV with the Real I.D. implementation date fast approaching. You will need a Real I.D. starting May 7, 2025 in order to fly or visit government facilities in the United States. NCDOT wants to stress the importance that this is not a deadline and getting a Real I.D. is completely optional. You can still get your Real I.D. after May 7th. You do not need a Real I.D. to drive your vehicle but you will need to get it if you plan to fly without using a passport or other form of government identification. DMV offices served a total of 185,000 transactions in the month of March alone. Of those, 82,000 were for a Real I.D. This is the most Real I.D. transactions in one month for the DMV in their recent past and they expect that number to grow as we move through both April and May. As a result, 51 percent of licenses in the state are now Real I.D. When this initiative launched, the goal was to ideally have a number around 50 percent, so these results are a good sign for NCDOT and they expect that number to continue to rise as well. Real I.D. customers aren't the only people at the DMV offices causing congestion. 'It's due to a variety of factors. Number one is the explosive population growth we've seen across the state over the last two decades,' DMV Communications Manager for NCDOT Marty Homan said. 'Teen drivers have to come into an office three times in a year-and-a-half timeframe and so, that's a lot of folks that are coming into the office,' For the morning hours, the DMV only serves scheduled appointments, they then serve walk-ins in the afternoon. As of right now, if you try to schedule an appointment, the next available date could be as far as 90 days away. Some people in the senior community have been seen waiting outside with lawn chairs due to the elongated wait times. The DMV also turns away walk-ins after they have reached a certain capacity of customers that they can service before closing time, forcing them to turn away any other people who are still waiting outside. 'I figured I could wait an hour and that would be no problem,' Earl Carney of Belhaven said. 'After about two-and-a-half hours, I finally reached the front door. Then, they said they had reached their capacity inside and they would no longer be accepting walk-ins for the rest of the day. One man I met said he drove 50 minutes just to get down here and try before ultimately not getting in. He said he was going to have to come back and try again the next day until he could get in.' The NCDOT is already working on solutions. Ninety-two out of 115 DMV locations are currently operating with an extended hour each day to try and serve more people. Starting May 31st, they will also be offering Saturday hours from 8 a.m. until noon for select locations including Greenville. This gives some people a chance to get in who may not be able to find time for the DMV during their average work week. For any elderly or disabled seniors, they advise you to get in contact with someone at the front desk. As soon as you arrive, make your disability known so that they can help you with the process. The workers at the DMV office are unable to help you or prioritize you if they are unaware of this disability. There is also a push in state legislation to approve more DMV employees to try and meet this demand. H.B. 199 requests for 24 additional employees at two new office locations and 61 additional employee positions to fill spaces that are currently vacant across the state. This legislation was included in the Governor's budget but not in the Senate and has yet to be approved by the House.
