REAL ID deadline passes amid uncertainty
The deadline to upgrade to a Real ID-complaint card, before Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents begin requiring them at the airport, has now passed. The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, took effect on Wednesday morning as uncertainty mounts about whether Americans can still travel domestically, even without a compliant ID. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem and other department officials are seeking to clarify the confusion around the requirement. Noem said during a House subcommittee hearing on Tuesday that travelers lacking a Real ID card, but have flights on Wednesday, will still be able to get to their destination, but will face some extra steps along the way. 'What will happen tomorrow is folks will come through the line, and [they] will issue their ID and show it. If it's not compliant, they may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step, but people will be allowed to fly,' the DHS chief told lawmakers. A senior DHS official said passengers who did not obtain a Real ID and lack alternatives, such as a passport, while being screened by TSA will be 'notified of their non-compliance, may be directed to a separate area and may receive additional screening.' 'TSA will enforce REAL ID and ensure there is no impact to wait times or TSA screening applications, especially for those passengers who are prepared with their REAL ID, passport or other acceptable form of ID,' the official said Tuesday in a statement. The 2005 legislation was passed to boost national security, setting requirements for what information citizens have to give to the state before obtaining a form of identification, including a driver's license. The Real IDs are issued in all 50 states, five U.S. territories and Washington, D.C. Passengers can visit the Department of Motor Vehicles to retrieve the cards. The demand for Real IDs has gone up in recent days, with state government offices expanding their office hours to satisfy the need. 'We are encouraging people who have passports or other REAL ID-compliant documents and people who don't have travel plans in the next few months to wait until after the current rush to apply for a REAL ID,' Erin Johnson, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press.

How many people in Wisconsin still need to get a Real ID? Here's what the data shows
More than 3 million Wisconsin residents already have their Real ID with less than a week before the deadline, according to the state Department of Transportation. Starting May 7, people 18 and older must have a Real ID-complaint driver's license or other TSA-approved identification to fly domestically. The DMV has offered Real ID cards since January 2013. Here's what to know about how many Wisconsin residents haven't signed up to get a Real ID, plus what you can do if you still need a new card. According to an April news release, over 64% of Wisconsin residents have a Real ID. But that leaves about a third of Wisconsinites who still haven't visited their DMV to get a Real ID. "Some have a passport or other acceptable REAL ID document, and others will not need a REAL ID if they're not planning to fly," said DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler in a statement. A Real ID is a more secure version of your driver's license, marked by a star in the upper right corner for a Wisconsin ID. The switch is part of the Real ID act, passed by Congress in 2005, which required the federal government create standards for identification, such as driver's licenses, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Under the law, ID cards have to meet certain standards for purposes like flying domestically or visiting federal buildings and military bases. To obtain a Real ID in Wisconsin, you'll need to go to your local DMV and won't be able to complete the process online. You can visit the DMV's website at to start filling on the necessary forms. The price to get a Real ID in Wisconsin is the same as getting or renewing a regular driver's license: $34. A regular photo ID costs $28. Most customers will receive their driver license or ID card within seven to 10 business days. TSA doesn't accept the paper receipt as proof of Real ID. You'll need to bring the following documents with you to get a Real ID in Wisconsin. Some documents may be used for more than one category, whereas others only satisfy the requirements of a single category. The documents include: Proof of name and date of birth Proof of legal presence in the U.S. Proof of name change if your name is different than what's on your birth certificate Proof of address Social Security Number You can use the DMV's interactive driver licensing guide for a personalized checklist of the required documents. You can also schedule an appointment at the DMV for faster service. You can check to see what the current wait time as your Milwaukee-area DMV here. Johnstown license center to be open on set days for those looking to apply for Real ID's
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — State Representative Frank Burns announced that the Johnstown License Center will be open extra days throughout March, April and May to help those looking to get a Real ID driver's license or photo ID. The center, located at 563 Walters Ave., is not typically open on Monday but will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on March 24, April 14, and May 5 to help verify and image documents for those looking for a Real ID. While getting a Real ID is optional in Pennsylvania, beginning May 7, Pennsylvanians will need a Real ID-complaint license or another form of federally acceptable identification to board domestic commercial flights, enter a military base or enter certain federal facilities that require a federally acceptable form of ID. 'The enforcement start date for the federal Real ID program is just over a month away and I don't want anyone to be caught off guard, which is why I'm encouraging anyone interested in getting a Real ID to consider visiting the Johnstown Driver License Center on one of these days to have their documents verified and scanned into the system,' Burns said. 'After doing that, a person can expect to receive their Real ID in the mail in about 15 business days.' The Real ID has a one-time fee of $30, and the expiration date on an initial Real ID product will include any remaining time on an individual's current non-Real ID driver's license or photo ID card.
