Trump Signs Executive Order Requiring Truck Drivers To Speak English, But That's Already Necessary By Law
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday requiring all of the truck drivers in America to be proficient in the English language, following his designation of English as the official language of the country in a separate executive order in March. As a result of the EO, reports The Hill, Transportation Secretary and former Real World/Road Rules cast member Sean Duffy will issue new guidance on proficiency testing and enforcement policies for truckers. If a driver is found in violation of the executive order, they'll be put "out of service." Here's the thing — federal law already required truckers to be proficient in English, and drivers need to prove their proficiency as a condition of obtaining a commercial driver's license. This seems like little more than another Trump policy aimed at harassing and detaining law-abiding Americans and exacerbating an already crisis-level trucking industry problem. Ostensibly this week's executive order was crafted to make the highways of the United States safe from the scourge of native Spanish and Punjabi speakers conversing in their most comfortable language. It specifies that drivers "need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English." Federal law already requires all commercial driver's license candidates demonstrate they can "read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records". So what good is this executive order? The FMCSA specified that the requirement was removed from its rulebook because they "could not substantiate the safety impacts" of the rule. This policy is specifically reversed by Trump's new EO, despite commercially licensed drivers needing to pass a physical exam, a drug test, prove they're in the country working legally, and the ability to pass a written knowledge test, a driving skills test, and a road test, all conducted in English, while driving on U.S. roads with all signage in English. These new Transportation Secretary requirements will potentially harm drivers' ability to make a salary for an as-yet-unknown Duffy-specified infraction. Will drivers lose their jobs for speaking to each other or to dock workers in their native language? Will trucks be programmed not to play foreign language music, or prevented from providing route instructions in any language other than English? If a driver has the kind of stellar safety record required to maintain a CDL and continue to be hired for hauls, the load arrives to its destination on time and intact, does it really matter what language they feel most comfortable speaking? The daughter of US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy told trolls to back off her father and instead direct their anger at ICE Barbie Kristi Noem. Evita Duffy-Alfonso took to X Sunday evening blasting those who believe her dad should 'get rid of TSA.' Her feisty remark came hours after Duffy posted a video of his family checking their luggage at an airport, as he asked his followers to tell him how the Department of Transportation can 'make traveling with family great again.' 'There's no better place to start a family than the USA so I want to make it easier for you to travel with your kids,' he wrote. 'Here's your chance to tell me, your Transportation Secretary, what I can do to make travel easier for your family. Send me your best ideas!' People did in fact share their ideas with him, as many spoke up about the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). 'Defund the TSA and allow all Americans to conceal carry and protect their person and family,' one suggested. This didn't sit well with Evita, as she reposted the clip and wrote: 'To everyone suggesting my dad get rid of TSA: he can't. TSA falls under DHS. Take it up with @Sec_Noem (and you should!).' Under her father's initial post, another person said: 'TSA makes traveling harder but not any safer. We need reinforced cockpit doors but not the rest. Let's go back to airport security like it was in the 90s.' 'Abolish the TSA. Get rid of the facial recognition software that everyone is forced into,' political commentator Savannah Hernandez wrote. Another suggested that TSA be 'replaced with more air marshals,' and added: 'Get rid of the TSA. The war on terror is over. Airport security should be basic, privately run, and non-invasive. No taking off shoes or belt.' Once Evita came swooping in to defend her father, many commenters appeared to back off and respect her demand. 'Copy,' Hernandez simply said as another said they will get in contact with Noem about their travel concerns 'right now.' 'Guilty. I'll reach out to Noem,' another user commented as someone else said she made 'a great point.' Although TSA is used for air travel in the US, it actually falls under the Department of Homeland Security, which is run by Noem. Both she and Duffy were chosen to be a part of President Donald Trump's administration for his second term. Duffy shares nine children with his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy, who he met on MTV's Real World. Not only has Duffy's daughter clapped back at trolls, but he has too - specifically with former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He fired back at Clinton after she warned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) shouldn't meddle with the Federal Aviation Administration's computer system. 'Madam Secretary, with all due respect, "experienced" Washington bureaucrats are the reason our nation's infrastructure is crumbling. You need to sit this one out,' Duffy told Clinton via an X post. He savaged her even more claiming she was concerned about DOGE because they were uncovering her 'family's obscene grifting via USAID.' Her statement was sparked by Duffy's announcement that DOGE was going to 'plug in to help upgrade our aviation system.' That then prompted a response from Trump's 2016 White House rival, who also served as first lady when her husband Bill was in office. They have no relevant experience,' the Democrat remarked. 'Most of them aren't old enough to rent a car. And you're going to let them mess with airline safety that's already deteriorated on your watch?' At that, Duffy, a former MTV Real World star and ex-congressman from Wisconsin, asked Clinton to 'sit this one out.' 'US airlines had gone 16 years without fatal crashes,' she responded. 'Then MAGA fired the FAA chief, gutted the Aviation Security Advisory Committee, and threatened air traffic controllers with layoffs.' Who has been the most-often booked interviewee on GB News's primetime chat shows so far this year? The answer is… a former Labour MP you've almost certainly never heard of. Russell-Moyle was ineligible to stand for Labour at the last general election after being suspended from the party over a claim about his behaviour. The complainant later withdrew the allegation. Since the start of this year the ex-MP has been the guest of Jacob Rees-Mogg 12 times, Nigel Farage 10 times and has once been on the generic GB News Tonight. Since January, he has been one of three Labourites who top the chart of GB News's guests on its most popular primetime shows. Second, with 18 appearances, is Matthew Laza, introduced as a 'former Labour advisor', having spent 10 months as the party's head of broadcasting a decade ago. He has been interviewed on Patrick Christys' show 12 times this year, Michelle Dewberry's four times and Matthew Goodwin's twice. Unlike Russell-Moyle, Laza remains broadly supportive of Keir Starmer's agenda – unlike the guest booked third most often, Barry Gardiner, a left wing MP who served in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet and who has appeared 14 times this year.
