Bellevue native promoted to Rear Admiral by U.S. Navy
This story was originally published on A Bellevue man received an incredibly high honor when the U.S. Navy promoted him to Rear Admiral. The decision came after a 'passing-of-the-guard' event occurred when the USS Gerald R. Ford held a change of command aboard the ship at Naval Station Norfolk. Rick Burgess was the captain of the USS Gerald R. Ford until Sunday. The USS Gerald R. Ford is a first-in-class nuclear aircraft carrier, the largest in the Navy. It is stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the Navy, Burgess led the Ford through its first deployment. His crew worked with 17 allied nations, flew 10,000 sorties, and earned several top awards. 'Serving as the Captain of the USS Gerald R. Ford and leading the world's finest Sailors has been the privilege of my lifetime,' Burgess said. 'This ship's extraordinary performance over the last two years is a testament to this talented crew and their ability to effectively employ the most capable, adaptable, and lethal combat platform in the world.' With Captain David Skarosi taking over the aircraft carrier, Burgess will take over the Navy's air combat training center in Nevada in addition to being promoted to Rear Admiral. He'll be in charge of tactics and training for pilots across the fleet. The USS Gerald R. Ford earned two Battle 'E' Efficiency awards, two Chief of Naval Operations Aviation 'S' Safety awards, the 2023 Rear Admiral (Upper Half) James 'Jig Dog' Ramage Award alongside Carrier Air Wing 8, and the 2023 Battenberg Cup for best all-around ship in the Fleet while Burgess was commanding officer, according to the Navy. 'Captain Burgess' leadership of the mission and his crew while serving as Gerald R. Ford's commanding officer has been truly gratifying,' Lanzilotta said. 'He built a culture of success through an extended operational deployment and the diligent preparation for another in quick succession. His commitment to excellence motivated the whole team to constantly learn, improve, and exceed expectations.' Rear Admiral is a high rank in the Navy, equivalent to Major General in other military branches. It's a two-star flag officer rank, and in peacetime, it's the highest permanent rank an officer can hold.

MMEA foils bid to smuggle out drug mixture worth RM15mil
ALOR GAJAH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized 179 litres of synthetic drug base worth RM15mil, believed to be bound for a neighbouring country through Melaka waters. Acting deputy director-general (Operations) for Melaka and Negri Sembilan Maritime Rear Adm Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the seizure was the largest ever recorded by the agency for such a substance. He said initial tests indicated the liquid contained methamphetamine, ecstasy and nicotine, and was usually used in the production of synthetic drugs. 'Intelligence gathered by the state maritime team, in collaboration with the Maritime Intelligence Division from MMEA Headquarters, led to the discovery of 15 boxes wrapped in black plastic along the shore of Pengkalan Balak Beach, near the Sailing Boat Training Centre here on Thursday (May 1). 'Upon inspecting the boxes, we discovered 179 bottles containing one litre of chemical liquid each, used in the processing of synthetic drugs and worth nearly RM15mil," he said in a statement on Monday (May 5). He said the boxes were found stacked by the seaside and it was believed that the smugglers planned to pick them up by boat. Rear Adm Zawawi said the agency suspects local individuals are behind the operation, coordinating the timing of their activities. "The illegal market in the neighbouring country is also experiencing a rising demand for synthetic drugs, and this quantity is sufficient to supply between 300,000 and 800,000 addicts. 'This substance can also be used in electronic cigarettes or vape devices, and we do not rule out the possibility that it may also be (sold) as vape liquid in our country, as the substance is being smuggled out from here," he added. The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952.

Lancashire: New school project facing 'challenges'
Council bosses have said they might have to expand some schools if they cannot build a new one in the next two years. Plots of land at Maxy Lane in Higher Bartle, near Preston, is the site Lancashire County Council wants to build a new 600-pupil school on. But it is also looking at the site of the former Tulketh High School in Ingol. The authority said there were "challenges" with both sites and that making current schools bigger was a possibility if the project could not be completed by September 2027. The council has previously suggested that unless it had the Higher Bartle land by the end of this month then it would use the Tulketh plot so the school could open in Rear, the council's cabinet member for education, said "every effort is being made to progress" the councillor added "alternative temporary solutions are being considered to mitigate against the risk of delay".Jennifer Mein, the deputy leader of the Labour opposition group, said it was "deplorable" that the Conservative-run authority had not yet settled on a location for the school when plans for the expansion of area north of Preston dated back more than a council leader Alan Vincent said he was "optimistic" the school would open in time.
