MMEA foils bid to smuggle out drug mixture worth RM15mil
ALOR GAJAH: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has seized 179 litres of synthetic drug base worth RM15mil, believed to be bound for a neighbouring country through Melaka waters.
Acting deputy director-general (Operations) for Melaka and Negri Sembilan Maritime Rear Adm Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the seizure was the largest ever recorded by the agency for such a substance.
He said initial tests indicated the liquid contained methamphetamine, ecstasy and nicotine, and was usually used in the production of synthetic drugs.
'Intelligence gathered by the state maritime team, in collaboration with the Maritime Intelligence Division from MMEA Headquarters, led to the discovery of 15 boxes wrapped in black plastic along the shore of Pengkalan Balak Beach, near the Sailing Boat Training Centre here on Thursday (May 1).
'Upon inspecting the boxes, we discovered 179 bottles containing one litre of chemical liquid each, used in the processing of synthetic drugs and worth nearly RM15mil," he said in a statement on Monday (May 5).
He said the boxes were found stacked by the seaside and it was believed that the smugglers planned to pick them up by boat.
Rear Adm Zawawi said the agency suspects local individuals are behind the operation, coordinating the timing of their activities.
"The illegal market in the neighbouring country is also experiencing a rising demand for synthetic drugs, and this quantity is sufficient to supply between 300,000 and 800,000 addicts.
'This substance can also be used in electronic cigarettes or vape devices, and we do not rule out the possibility that it may also be (sold) as vape liquid in our country, as the substance is being smuggled out from here," he added.
The case is being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952.

Five Indonesians held for murder
KLUANG: Police have arrested five men in connection with the death of an Indonesian man at an oil palm plantation here. Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the suspects, aged between 21 and 31, were arrested at 1am yesterday. 'At 9.36am on Saturday, we were alerted about a man in his 30s who had died at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital after being stabbed in the left side of his chest. 'Further investigation led to the arrest of the five suspects, who are all Indonesian men,' he said in a statement yesterday. The suspects, who have no criminal records, have been remanded for seven days. 'We are still investigating the cause of the fight that led to the man's death,' ACP Bahrin said. He urged those with information about the case to come forward and assist the police investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. In an unrelated case, ACP Bahrin said the police arrested a drug-positive personal driver after he had been involved in an accident. The 40-year-old man was arrested at 6.30am on Friday after testing positive for methamphetamine. 'The suspect was driving towards Kluang town from Taman Sri Kluang and suddenly veered into the opposite lane. 'He collided head-on with another car in that lane,' he said. The suspect was uninjured while a 36-year-old businessman in the other car suffered injuries to his hands and had some abdominal pain. After the incident, the suspect was taken to the Kluang police headquarters' Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for a urine test. The suspect also has a criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for self-administering dangerous drugs.

Bodies of missing couple Tanjung Harapan boat accident recovered
A TRAGIC boat accident off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, has claimed five lives, including a married couple whose bodies were found drowned near North Port early this morning. The incident, which occurred during a test drive of the boat, involved six people. Three died at the scene, one survived, and two were initially missing. None of the victims were wearing life jackets, complicating the search and rescue efforts. The missing couple, Gan Hon Tat and Careen Man, both from Klang Utama, were among the deceased. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcement and excise unit operations officer Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali said both victims were Malaysian nationals. 'The bodies were found floating at 7.42am about 0.1 nautical miles from North Port, Port Klang,' he said. 'We recovered the bodies using assets from the Fire and Rescue Department and brought them to the Selangor Maritime jetty,' he added.
