Former Appleton West teacher pleads not guilty to sex crimes with student

A former Appleton West High School teacher pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student during the 2017-18 academic year at an arraignment July 2. Rebecca Ryan, 43, of Fox Crossing, is charged with three counts of sex assault by school staff. Ryan's attorney, Kevin Musolf, also filed a motion to reduce Ryan's $50,000 cash bond, which she posted May 9, to $5,000. In court July 2, Musolf pointed out Ryan's lack of a criminal record and ties to the area as reasons she would be unlikely to leave the area if her bond was reduced. Additionally, Musolf said, the case against Ryan is based on "rather dated allegations" and primarily a "he said-she said situation." Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney Alex Sidman disagreed, and said the severity of the allegations against Ryan necessitate the high cash bond. Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Mark Schroeder denied the defense's motion, saying nothing has changed since Ryan's bond was put into place that would justify reducing it. Ryan is scheduled to return to court at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 2 for a pre-trial conference. According to a criminal complaint, a 25-year-old man told police in March that when he was a 17-year-old student at Appleton West High School, he had sexual intercourse with Ryan on multiple occasions. The man said the encounters while he was underage took place during the first semester of his senior year, between September 2017 and January 2018. When police interviewed Ryan she denied ever engaging in a sexual relationship with the former student, the complaint says. Ryan was arrested April 29, according to the Appleton Police Department. She was not employed as a teacher at the time of her arrest. Contact Kelli Arseneau at 920-213-3721 or karseneau@ Follow her on X, formerly Twitter, at @ArseneauKelli.
