The streamer has announced a new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, helmed by showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, Vampire Diaries). 'I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old,' Sonnenshine told Netflix. 'They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.' Below, here's everything we know about the upcoming adaptation so far. Written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the series (which has a total of nine books published from 1935 to 1971) was based on her childhood spent in the American Midwest in the late 1800s. The new adaptation promises to be 'part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West.' The cast will include several relative newcomers. Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry, Days of Our Lives) will star as Laura Ingalls. Luke Bracey (Little Fires Everywhere, Elvis), Crosby Fitzgerald (Palm Royale, Abbott Elementary), and Skywalker Hughes will round out the Ingalls family as Charles, Caroline, and Mary, respectively. Jocko Sims, Warren Christie, Wren Zhawenim Gotts, Meegwun Fairbrother, and Alyssa Wapanatâhk will appear as series regulars, and Xander Cole will be recurring. Only two of the actors (Sims and Christie) will play people from the books, while the others will be entirely new characters. 'I am absolutely thrilled with the brilliant cast we have assembled,' Sonnenshine told Netflix. 'Each one of them brings something special to the Little House universe and will help make this story come alive for a whole new generation.' Not yet, but very soon! According to Deadline, production is set to begin next month in Winnipeg, Canada. No, but watch this space. This story will be updated.

See the Cast of Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' Reboot Side-by-Side with the Original Series' Stars
More than 40 years after Little House on the Prairie ended, fans are returning to the American West. In January 2025, Netflix announced that it would be rebooting the Little House on the Prairie series for a new audience — an adaptation that, according to the show's official logline, will be "part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale and part origin story of the American West." 'I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old,' showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine said in a statement, per Variety. 'They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.' The original NBC series — based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's classic books about her childhood in the late 1800s — followed the life of Laura Ingalls, a pioneer girl growing up with her family during America's westward expansion. The show began with their life in Wisconsin and traced their move to Kansas as they faced hardships like crop failures and disease. It ran for nine seasons from 1974 to 1983 and starred Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls, Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as Caroline Ingalls and Melissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls. In May 2025, Netflix announced four cast members who would be starring in the series, including Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls. With the remake on the way, here's a look at the new Little House on the Prairie cast side-by-side with the actors who formerly played the Ingalls family. Alice Halsey will play Laura Ingalls — the bright, honest, authority-questioning and sometimes disruptive young heroine of Netflix's Little House on the Prairie. "I love all of the Little House books so much, and I'm so excited and grateful to get to bring Laura to life!" Halsey wrote on Instagram in May 2025. "Thank you so much to the Little House creative team for putting your faith in me." Halsey is an up-and-coming actress whose past credits include Lessons in Chemistry, Days of Our Lives, Night Court and Kindergarten: The Musical. Melissa Gilbert previously played Laura Ingalls in NBC's Little House on the Prairie. She went on to star in several TV shows and films, including 23 episodes of the NBC show Sweet Justice and 2017's TV movie Tenure. As for a possible cameo in Netflix's new series, Gilbert told PEOPLE in February 2025 that it's a "conversation to be had another day, or maybe not." She continued, "My knee-jerk reaction is that I think they should create their own whole universe and maybe not try and cross things over too much or cross the streams as it were." Luke Bracey will play Laura Ingalls' Pa, Charles Ingalls, in the upcoming remake of Little House on the Prairie. Bracey, who has been acting since 2009, is best known for 2020's Holidate, in which he starred opposite Emma Roberts. He also appeared in Elvis (2022) as talent manager Jerry Schilling and starred in the 2023 thriller Mercy Road. Michael Landon was the first actor to portray Charles Ingalls. After Little House on the Prairie ended in 1983, he starred in the NBC series Highway to Heaven, which ran for five seasons. He also filmed two TV movies — Where Pigeons Go to Die and Us — before his death from pancreatic cancer in July 1991. Crosby Fitzgerald will play Laura Ingalls' Ma, Caroline Ingalls, in the Netflix remake. Like Halsey, Fitzgerald is also an up-and-coming actress. Her past acting credits include appearances in TV series such as Abbott Elementary, The First Lady and Palm Royale. Actress Karen Grassle originally played Caroline Ingalls. She has acted intermittently since NBC's Little House on the Prairie ended — most notably, starring in the series' TV movie Little House: The Last Farewell in 1984 and the 2021 film Not to Forget. Skywalker Hughes will portray Laura Ingalls' older sister, Mary Ingalls. Fans might recognize the young actress from the Amazon Prime Video show Joe Pickett, in which she played Sheridan Pickett for two seasons, or the 2024 film Ordinary Angels, in which she starred opposite Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson. Mary Ingalls was previously played by Melissa Sue Anderson, who went on to appear in shows like The Equalizer and voice Snowbird in X-Men: The Animated Series. Read the original article on People

Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot reveals its cast
The Little House on the Prairie reboot cast has been revealed, four months after Netflix announced their plans to release a new take on the beloved Western series. Although it is hard to imagine anyone else portraying members of the Ingalls family, the new faces of the characters, based on the classic books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, have been unveiled. Australian actor, Luke Bracey, best known for his roles in Elvis, Monte Carlo, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will be portraying Charles Ingalls, also known as 'Pa.' Meanwhile, up-and-coming actress, Crosby Fitzgerald will play Ma, Caroline Ingalls, Alice Halsey will portray Laura and Skywalker Hughes will star as Laura's older sister, Mary. It has been more than 40 years since the original, long-running series wrapped its final episode after nine seasons in 1984. In a statement, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Jinny Howe, vp drama series for Netflix, revealed that the reboot will be a 'fresh take on this iconic story.' Howe also praised showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine for bringing 'emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.' 'I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix,' Sonnenshine said of the upcoming project. Following the announcement on X, social media users expressed outrage and worry that the reboot would be too 'woke.' 'Please don't ruin another treasured piece of literature and Americana,' one tweeted. A second wrote: 'Reimagining? No thank you.' 'Why does it have to be "reimagined"? You're going to screw this up,' a third predicted. Another pleaded with Netflix to 'leave things alone for the love of God.' 'If this is made from a woke leftist perspective the family should sue Netflix,' a fifth wrote. Others begged the streamer not to touch Little House on the Prairie as they stressed they didn't want to see a 'politically correct' version of the show. 'Play the old ones, I'd watch those,' another X user tweeted. A large handful of Netflix subscribers also said they would not watch if it did not stay 'faithful to the original books/tv show.' Others, however, tweeted their excitement and called the news 'awesome.' In June, the Little House on the Prairie cast reunited at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in Monaco. Karen Grassle, Alison Arngrim, Melissa Sue Anderson, Matthew Labyorteaux, and Wendi Lou Lee sat on a panel and reflected on their favorite memories from the show. They also addressed fans questions about a reboot or reunion of the series. 'There have been lots of attempts to do a Little House on the Prairie again,' Grassle, 82, who played the show's matriarch Caroline Ingalls, explained to People. 'There have been shows, there have been a musical, and I think we had a unique experience and it can't be repeated.' 'Michael [Landon] was a genius at casting and writing,' she added of her onscreen husband, who played Charles Ingalls. 'He understood things about how to translate that material into television for the public that was beyond what most writers understand. 'And he had his thumb on the pulse of the public and understood what people were longing for, and you don't find that every day,' she gushed about the late actor who was also an executive producer and writer for the show. 'And then the fact that we were all so perfectly cast was a kind of genius,' she added, looking at her costars. Anderson, who played eldest sister Mary Ingalls, had her own reason for thinking a reboot wouldn't work and its because Landon wouldn't be part of it. 'Little House works on television because of him,' she said. Landon died in 1991. Arngrim, 62, who played Nellie Oleson in the series is ready to take on a new role if there was ever a reboot of Little House – her mother. 'I always joke that if they do redo the entire thing, I am ready to play Mrs. Oleson. Absolutely, I'm down for that,' she sassed. Little House on the Prairie followed the adventures of the Ingalls family as they built a homestead and life in the 19th century Midwest.

This is probably why ‘Little House on the Prairie' is getting a reboot
Score another win for nostalgia. Netflix is planning a reboot of the 'Little House on the Prairie' series that was based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It's an historic intellectual property with modern appeal, given that Nielsen recently revealed the 50-year-old television series had 13.3 billion minutes of viewing time on Peacock last year. 'I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old,' Rebecca Sonnenshine, showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming reboot, said in an announcement for the project. 'They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.' The books were based on Ingalls' life growing up in the American Midwest in the late 19th century. 'Little House on the Prairie' ran on NBC from 1974 to 1982, starring then-child star Melissa Gilbert as Ingalls and Michael Landon as her father, Charles known as Pa. The books and show focused on their family, including mother Caroline (Ma) and Laura's siblings, Mary, Carrie and Grace, as well as the townsfolk of Walnut Grove. According to Netflix, 'the new Little House on the Prairie is part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West' and 'will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.' The new show will join similar Netflix fare like 'Virgin River,' 'Sweet Magnolias,' 'My Life with the Walter Boys,' and the forthcoming 'Ransom Canyon.' Trip Friendly, chief executive officer of Friendly Family Productions, has a personal connection to the new project. Her father, Ed Friendly, produced the original series. 'It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father's legacy and adapt Wilder's classic American stories for a 21st-century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series,' she said. Gilbert, who is now 60, has a company named Modern Prairie, which sells lifestyle items from clothing to candles.
