This is probably why ‘Little House on the Prairie' is getting a reboot
Score another win for nostalgia.
Netflix is planning a reboot of the 'Little House on the Prairie' series that was based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
It's an historic intellectual property with modern appeal, given that Nielsen recently revealed the 50-year-old television series had 13.3 billion minutes of viewing time on Peacock last year.
'I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old,' Rebecca Sonnenshine, showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming reboot, said in an announcement for the project. 'They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.'
The books were based on Ingalls' life growing up in the American Midwest in the late 19th century. 'Little House on the Prairie' ran on NBC from 1974 to 1982, starring then-child star Melissa Gilbert as Ingalls and Michael Landon as her father, Charles known as Pa.
The books and show focused on their family, including mother Caroline (Ma) and Laura's siblings, Mary, Carrie and Grace, as well as the townsfolk of Walnut Grove.
According to Netflix, 'the new Little House on the Prairie is part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West' and 'will offer a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.'
The new show will join similar Netflix fare like 'Virgin River,' 'Sweet Magnolias,' 'My Life with the Walter Boys,' and the forthcoming 'Ransom Canyon.'
Trip Friendly, chief executive officer of Friendly Family Productions, has a personal connection to the new project. Her father, Ed Friendly, produced the original series.
'It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father's legacy and adapt Wilder's classic American stories for a 21st-century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series,' she said.
Gilbert, who is now 60, has a company named Modern Prairie, which sells lifestyle items from clothing to candles.

The Woman in the Yard had a $12 million budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers. The film didn't play well with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 40% 'rotten' rating based on 70 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'The Woman in the Yard has plenty of spooky promise in its premise and a committed performance from Danielle Deadwyler, but the story's heavy-handed metaphor leaves little room for scares or surprise.' Audiences received the film a bit better on RT, as The Woman in the Yard received a 47% 'rotten' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. The RT audience summary reads, 'With striking imagery, The Woman in the Yard honorably tackles mental health issues but withers in delivering the horror it purports.' Produced by Jason Blum's horror film-based Blumhouse Productions, The Woman in the Yard arrives on Peacock on June 27.

"The acting is excellent and the pacing is good, except for a short time in the middle where it focuses on the killer's POV. "I especially liked the actress who played the lieutenant," writes another. This Hit Keke Palmer and SZA Movie Has a Whopping 94 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes—and Now It's Getting a Sequel
One of Them Days is officially getting a sequel. The buddy comedy, starring Keke Palmer and SZA that proved to be a sleeper hit at the box office earlier this year, is back in action, according to an exclusive from Variety. The sequel, which Issa Rae is producing, is in early development at TriStar Pictures, and while details of the plot are being kept under wraps, both Palmer and SZA are expected to reprise their roles. One of Them Days debuted with a whopping 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release, narrowly beating out Mufasa for the number one box office spot over MLK weekend. (The film currently still has a 94 percent on RT.) It also reached the number one spot on Netflix when it made its streaming debut. In the movie, Palmer and SZA star as best friends and roommates, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). They encounter a day of dramatic chaos, as a young woman's boyfriend takes the rent money, putting them in a situation where they have to come up with $1,500 before the end of the day. Considered something of a modern female version of Friday, it also stars notable names like Janelle James, Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow and Katt Williams. One of Them Days was produced by Issa Rae in conjunction with her Hoorae Media production company and directed by Lawrence The Met Museum/Vogue Palmer served as an executive producer as well, telling The Cut in a January 2025 profile: "I had to really be specific about what needed to change, what the jokes were going to say, what story we're telling about where these two characters come from," she told the publication. "I was more than just an actor doing the role. I really cared about the project as a whole. The result is a surprisingly heartfelt buddy comedy that's also a story of gentrification, about community, about joy in the midst of hardship." In my review of the film, I wrote that one of the most enjoyable parts of the film was the slapstick comedy that wasn't traditionally "funny," but became humorous because of how ridiculous it was.
