Chengannur Revenue Tower construction set to begin

The construction of a Revenue Tower, bringing all major government offices under one roof, is set to begin at Chengannur. It will be inaugurated by Revenue Minister K. Rajan in a function to be held at the old Taluk office compound at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The tower will be constructed on a 40-cent plot near the Chengannur court at a cost of ₹22.12 crore. The facility is designed to house various government services, including those of the RDO, taluk, village and sub-registrar offices, in one place. The decision to build the new facility was prompted by the recognition, during the 2018 floods, of the inadequate infrastructure in the revenue offices, including the taluk office, which had served as the central coordination hub for rescue operations in Chengannur. Following a proposal by Fisheries and Culture Minister Saji Cherian, the project was included in the Rebuild Kerala initiative. The four-storey building, designed in the Kerala architectural style, will have a total floor area of 56,640 sq ft. The ground floor will feature parking, a lobby and storage for voting machines. The first floor will accommodate the registration and village offices. The second floor will house the taluk office and election department, while the third floor will include the RDO conference hall. The fourth floor will accommodate the disaster management office, a conference hall, and a recreation area. In addition, the Revenue Tower will include rooms for storing equipment to be used during natural disasters, droughts, earthquakes or other emergencies; a modern record room; a strong room; a training hall; a cafeteria; and a rest room for staff. Mr. Cherian will preside over the function. Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, Alappuzha District Panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari, Chengannur municipal chairperson Sobha Varghese, District Collector Alex Varghese and others will attend.

Kochi corporation urged to adopt affordable waste management methods

KOCHI: As the Kochi Corporation has taken steps to become waste-free by August this year, the opposition alleged that out of the more than one lakh shops registered in the assessment register of the corporation, only 25,000 have been licensed, and of these, less than 500 establishments are handing over waste to authorised agencies. 'According to corporation records, over one lakh commercial establishments have obtained occupancy certificates to conduct business. These buildings pay a higher building tax than residences. But only less than 25,000 of these have been issued licences this year. Of these, Rebuild Kerala, the authorised agency to collect bulk waste through the MyKochi app, collects waste from less than 500 establishments,' said Antony Kureethara, the leader of opposition. He added that only a small portion of the waste generated in the city is being collected and that waste is being disposed of through illegal means. 'The corporation should take the initiative to provide a cost-effective waste disposal method for shops and establishments. In March, Rs 2.16 crore was spent on waste management. However, the corporation received only Rs 64 lakh out of more than Rs one crore it was supposed to receive from shops for collecting bulk waste,' said M G Aristottil, the UDF parliamentary party secretary. He extended full support of the UDF councillors to make the city waste-free through proper planning and action plans.

Night-time mobile veterinary services launched in Kannur

The Animal husbandry department launched night-time veterinary services under the Rebuild Kerala programme in Kannur on Tuesday (May 6 2025), enabling animal owners to access treatment with a single call to 1962. The initiative, operational from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., adds three new mobile veterinary units in the Thalassery, Taliparamba and Koothuparamba blocks. The vehicles were handed over by District Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. O.M. Ajitha to senior veterinary surgeons from the respective blocks. Each unit includes a veterinary doctor and a driver-cum-attendant. On receiving a call, the nearest unit will be dispatched. Treatment fees are ₹450 for cattle and ₹900 for dogs and cats. The additions are part of the 47 mobile clinics approved across Kerala. Kannur already has units at Iritty and Payyanur under the Livestock Health and Disease Control programme. Dr Ajitha said the service was expanded in response to positive feedback from dairy farmers. The vehicle handover was held at the district veterinary hospital in the presence of Chief Veterinary Officer P.K. Padmaraj, deputy director Anil Kumar, and project officer K.V. Santhosh.
