Miley Cyrus has post-‘Flowers' bloom on new album ‘Something Beautiful': review

Before her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful,' arrived on Friday, Miley Cyrus had finally got her 'Flowers.' Seventeen years after 'Meet Miley Cyrus' was coupled with the 'Hannah Montana 2' soundtrack to introduce her as a teen-pop princess distinct from her Disney Channel character, the 32-year-old singer had won respect along with her first two Grammys — including the prestigious Record of the Year — for her 2023 smash 'Flowers.' So 'Something Beautiful' is something of a victory party (in the U.S.A.) for Cyrus. 5 Cyrus makes a confident move into a new era where tapping the charts doesn't matter as much as leveling up the art. Getty Images for TikTok After even getting a co-sign from Beyoncé — their 'II Most Wanted' duet, a highlight of 'Cowboy Carter,' won Cyrus a third Grammy in February — she has nothing to prove anymore. And there's a sense of freedom in the ambition on 'Something Beautiful.' If it's not 'Endless Summer Vacation' — Cyrus' excellent 2023 album that gave us 'Flowers' — it's a confident move into a new era where tapping the charts doesn't matter as much as leveling up the art. She doesn't need to compete with the Sabrina Carpenters of the world. Taking a cue from Beyoncé — who navigated a similar transition with her 2013 self-titled surprise album — 'Something Beautiful' is a visual album that will be accompanied by a short film that will be released on June 6. And there is a cinematic scope to it with a dramatic spoken prelude and two instrumental interludes that are meant to bring a certain gravitas to it all. 5 Miley Cyrus performed her No 1 smash 'Flowers' at the 2024 Grammy Awards. So just indulge Miss Miley — or use that skip button — and enjoy the rest of 'Something Beautiful.' Cyrus comes out swinging like a wrecking ball with the title track, which is one of the best things that she has ever recorded. Although it feels like it would have been an epic closer, it immediately sets a high bar for the album as she veers from D'Angelo-esque neo-soul to Pink Floyd-ish prog-rock — she has cited 'The Wall' as an inspiration for this album — in a way that you would've never imagined that Mickey Mouse would've never imagined. Indeed, there's a genre-blurring boldness to it that conjures up Prince, who Cyrus echoes when she sings 'watching the doves cry into the sunrise.' 5 Miley Cyrus performed at SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert' at Radio City Music Hall in February. Kevin Mazur/Peacock via Getty Images It gets the album off to a stellar start that continues with 'End of the World,' an apocalyptic, retro-'80s bop that is part Prince — think '1999' — and part Stevie Nicks, an influence who Cyrus previously channeled on 2020's 'Midnight Sky.' Although the single hasn't quite taken off like 'Flowers' yet, it deserves to be one of the bops of summer. Then there's 'More to Lose,' an aching breakup ballad that seems to hint at Cyrus' bruised heart from her split with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth: 'You're looking like a a movie star in a worn-out coat/So I throw away my mind/It happens all the time,' she sings, letting you feel every bit of her pain in her signature, singular timbre. Meanwhile, 'Easy Lover' is a breezy ditty that effortlessly straddles country and pop, blues and soul. Apparently Cyrus offered the song to Beyoncé for 'Cowboy Carter' before recording it herself. 'Tell 'em B,' she even ad-libs in a nod to Mrs. Carter that would have made perfect sense in a duet. 5 Miley Cyrus' 'Something Beautiful' album will have a companion film released on June 6. AP While we unfortunately don't get another duet with Beyoncé on 'Something Beautiful' — the two sounded way better together than they should have on 'II Most Wanted' — Cyrus gets help from Brittany Howard and Naomi Campbell(!), respectively, on 'Walk of Fame' and 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved,' two of the electro-dance tracks in the final stretch of the album. But here, they feel like a bit of a retreat back to the dance-pop of 'Endless Summer Vacation.' You kinda wish that Cyrus had had the courage of her convictions with which she started the album. It's as if she felt that she needed to hedge her bets. But 'Golden Burning Sun' and 'Pretend You're God' are dreamy reveries that set the blissed-out mood for summer romance. And when Cyrus ends the album with the psych-tinged ballad 'Give Me Love,' you'll be offering up just that.

Miley Cyrus shares hidden battle that almost stopped her Grammys performance

Miley Cyrus has opened up about the post-pandemic anxiety battle which left her afraid to perform in public and even led to her almost missing out on the Grammys, where she won two gongs. Singer Miley Cyrus has revealed that she suffered with anxiety following the Covid-19 pandemic, admitting she was worried about getting back out in public after being locked away for so long. While the pop star may appear to be oozing with confidence from the outside, she shared in a new interview that lockdown took it's toll on her sense of self and even left her questioning whether to go to the 2024 Grammy's, where she was awarded the coveted Record of the Year gong for her acclaimed album Flowers and the Best Pop Solo Award. ‌ Explaining that she went to the award show for 'healing', Miley told The Zane Lowe Show: "I wasn't going to go to the Grammys. I wasn't going to perform at the Grammys for sure because as everybody was post-pandemic, I was struggling with a lot of anxiety. ‌ "And going from being locked down for a couple of years to being on the stage in front of Oprah just felt like shocking to every part of my nervous system. And so I almost didn't do that. "And I started doing shows at the Chateau Marmont that were intimate and you know, all hand-chosen by me, and I had a celebration with the closest people in my life to celebrate the nomination of the Grammys." She continued, "But it was just so bittersweet because I felt like the whole night I was making excuses for why I wasn't going to go. One, it was, I was afraid, and there was fear. But I also don't think I wanted to ever look at how much it would mean to me to win." The rare interview comes as Miley recently cleared up rumours she was in a family feud with her mum, Tish, assuring that the pair are tighter than ever. ‌ Rumours began to swirl after Tish reportedly seemingly unfollowed her daughter on Instagram, but clearing things up, the latter put it down to a technical error. "I rarely comment on rumours, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us. She's my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn't know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me - simple, coincidental and uninteresting," said Miley on Instagram. Tish echoed this sentiment, explaining: "I didn't. Idk what happened lol. I have no idea how that happened but it's fixed now [pink heart emoji]."

EXCLUSIVE Secret heartache behind Elizabeth Hurley and Billy Ray Cyrus as insiders reveal why they have no plans to unite their families

Eyes closed and beaming as her new man planted a kiss on her cheek, there were no signs of the pain Elizabeth Hurley and her new man Billy Ray Cyrus have suffered as they confirmed their shock new romance. After blindsiding fans over Easter, the British actress, 59, and the Achy Breaky Heart crooner, 63, continued their love-in this weekend, sharing pictures from a recent trip to his Tennessee home. But behind their newfound happiness is years of personal struggles and heartbreak, the pain of which is said to have bonded the unlikely duo. Elizabeth was 'left reeling' when Steve Bing, the father of her only child, took his own life in June 2020. Two years later she was heartbroken by the news of her ex-fiancé Shane Warne 's death. Meanwhile, Billy Ray has endured two divorces in two years and has been plagued by reports of estrangement from his children and concerns for his wellbeing after his son Trace shared an open letter to his father following his controversial performance at President Trump's inauguration. 'Liz has had her struggles,' an insider told 'She was left reeling after Steve's death and was dealt another blow when Shane died two years later. 'Billy Ray has had issues with his love life and with family in recent years. They have bonded over heartbreak and they both revel in each other's resilience. 'There's definitely a spark between them. They just get along.' But when it comes to their children, the source said they want to 'figure each other out before they start adding in other family members.' Hurley has son Damian, 23, while Billy Ray shares daughters Miley, 32, and Noah, 25, as well as son Braison, 30, with his ex-wife Tish Cyrus. He also adopted her children, daughter Brandi, 37, and son Trace, 36, from her previous marriage to musician Baxter Neal Helson. The two families have yet to unite, but Damian has grown close to Billy Ray, even joining his mother during her recent stay at the singer's sprawling 500-acre Tennessee farm. 'Billy does have a connection with Damian, and talks to him a bunch, but they will take the time to fully incorporate their families,' the insider said. 'Miley isn't paying much attention to who her dad is dating because she still has to figure out what type of relationship she wants with him going forward.' has contacted representatives for Billy Ray, Elizabeth and Miley for comment. The father-daughter duo have had a strained relationship since he split from Tish in 2022, with Miley and her siblings seemingly picking sides. She was a no show at his wedding to Firerose in 2023 which was attended by Noah and Braison and ended last year with a very public and bitter divorce. Rumors of estrangement between Miley and her father intensified when she failed to mention him during her acceptance speech for Record of the Year at the 2024 Grammy Awards, in which she gave a shout out to her sister Brandi and mom Tish. previously reported how Billy Ray's new relationship had come as a 'slap in the face' for his ex wife who had long suspected a relationship with Elizabeth. Tish and Billy Ray officially divorced in April 2022 after nearly three decades of marriage. She is now married to actor Dominic Purcell, who she wed in an intimate Malibu ceremony in August 2023 with Miley as her maid of honor. Noah and Braison did not attend. Elizabeth was previously married to multimillionaire textile heir Arun Nayar in 2007. They divorced in 2011, but have remained good friends, with the actress once claiming that it was the 'cheapest case' her lawyer had ever handled 'because neither of us wanted anything.' She was previously engaged to Australian cricketer Shane. The pair dated from 2010 until 2013, with the sportsman proposing in 2011. He was found unresponsive in his villa in Koh Samui, and was later pronounced dead aged 52, back in 2022. Elizabeth was left heartbroken. 'I feel like the sun has gone behind a cloud forever,' she wrote on Instagram at the time alongside pictures of the pair. 'RIP my beloved Lionheart.' Last week she received the seal of approval from Shane's daughter Brooke, 27. The influencer wrote 'gorgeous' and posted a love heart and cowboy emoji in response to a gallery of images the actress had tagged Billy Ray in. Austin Powers actress Elizabeth starred alongside Billy Ray in 2022 film Christmas in Paradise. They reconnected when she came to his aid as his third marriage crumbled last year, sending him a message to let him know 'you've got a friend in your corner.' Sources recently told The Sun that friends have said 'marriage could be on the cards' soon.
