On this day: McAdoo to Hall of Fame, Red Claws become Maine Celtics
On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtics forward Bob McAdoo was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame alongside Detroit Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas and several others in 2000. McAdoo was, at best, a reluctant Celtic, traded to the franchise from the New York Knicks. He was concerned about the racial climate of the city, which had a reputation for being particularly hostile to African Americans. Conversely, team president Red Auerbach had not been consulted on the deal by ownership and nearly quit as a result. But all parties stuck it out for six months, and McAdoo was dealt to the Detroit Pistons for draft assets. Advertisement McAdoo played 20 games for Boston, averaging 20.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2 assists per game with the franchise. The familiar lobster mascot stayed but turned green, and the club was henceforth known as the (Portland) Maine Celtics. David McGlynn 3 The statue was adorned with the jersey of Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson. 'Bro, that's f—ked up, that should be a crime,' one 20-something said as he walked by the bronze likeness at Faneuil Hall. On the time Boston Celtics legend Red Auerbach punched an NBA owner
Iconic Boston Celtics head coach and general manager Red Auerbach was as competitive as it gets, and it could occasionally boil over into more than simply taunting his opponents on the court with a well-timed victory cigar. Auerbach was even known to have mixed it up with the coaches and once, even the owner of the team Boston was squaring off against. In the spirit of the historical deep dive inspired by the new HBO documentary series about the Celtics (aptly called "Celtics City"), the folks behind the "NBC Sports Boston" YouTube channel put together a clip looking back at Red's tenure at the helm of the team, specifically how he defended the Celtics like a bulldog. Take a look at the clip embedded below to see what they had to say about Auerbach for yourself.
