MRC Miri's dialysis centre in urgent need of refurbishment, says Lee
Lee (right) joins in the blood pressure and glucose testing service. MIRI (Aug 11): The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri branch is calling for public and corporate support to help upgrade its dialysis centre. It said that the facility, which currently serves over 300 patients in the division, requires a complete refurbishment and the total upgrade is expected to cost over RM4 million. The appeal was made during a Blood Donation and Organ Pledging Campaign at MRC Miri's headquarters here held in conjunction with World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin visited the campaign yesterday to show his support for the initiative. He noted the dialysis centre was in urgent need of refurbishment and equipment replacement. 'The centre has been operating for 30 years, and most of its facilities are no longer useable. We plan to replace all 36 machines and upgrade the centre,' he told reporters. He added the patients would be temporarily relocated to MRC Permyjaya's dialysis centre for treatment while the upgrading works are being carried out. Lee (sixth right) takes a group photo with volunteers and representatives from participating organisations during the campaign. 'This is a charitable dialysis centre. All the patients can pay according to their means, with the rest subsidised through public and corporate support,' he said. During the event, there was free blood pressure and glucose testing; wound care services; organ donation registration; and exhibitions from public and volunteer organisations. It also featured friendly pickleball matches, organised by the City Chaser Pickleball Club and Northern Seahorse Pickleball Club. Lee interacts with one of the blood donors. Proceeds from the pickleball games would go towards the MRC Miri branch's operational costs. The upcoming MRC Charity Run in October will help fund both operations and dialysis centre renovations. Lee urged the public and corporations to donate generously, as their contributions are essential for the dialysis centre's continued services. dialysis centre lead Lee Kim Shin Malaysian Red Crescent public donations

Humanitarian theme in MRCS parade
Ling (standing at podium) and Chua (right) watching the MRCS Sibu march-past in Tun Zaidi Stadium. THE Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch's Annual Inspection Parade 2025 held in Sibu town, Sarawak, carries on a proud community tradition. MRCS Sibu chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee described the event as a celebration of the society members' discipline, unity and selflessness. 'The parade is a powerful symbol of our dedication to serving humanity. This lies at the very heart of MRCS Sibu,' he said. At the Tun Zaidi Stadium, members marched in precision and saluted beneath fluttering flags bearing the symbolic colours of the MRCS. Chua emphasised that these displays reflected a readiness to serve in hard times. 'These show our commitment to humanitarian services and our willingness to give selflessly in times of crises, without expecting anything in return. As long as there is a need, there will be someone wearing the Red Crescent emblem, and who is ready to serve, comfort and heal,' he added. Chua also explained MRCS Sibu's vision of nurturing young people through its ranks, with juniors becoming cadets and eventually graduating into the Voluntary Aid Detachment unit. This approach fosters lifelong contributors to the humanitarian sector, he noted. 'The impact of your good deeds is bigger than you will ever know. 'Let us move forward together with strength and purpose.' The parade highlighted this year's World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day theme 'On the Side of Humanity'. Chua said the theme symbolised the organisation's daily mission to put people first, act with compassion and serve all individuals regardless of background, status or belief. 'It is a call to stand firmly on the side of kindness and service,' he added. Sibu district education officer Ahli Chikba called on parents and community to continue to support the role of MRCS in schools. 'Encourage children to join uniformed bodies like MRCS, not just for Physical Activity, Sports and Co-Curriculum Assessment marks but to deepen the meaning of humanity and volunteerism,' he stated in his speech that was read out by his representative Jeremy Ling.

Hundreds march in West Bank against killings of medics
RAMALLAH: Hundreds of Palestinian Red Crescent staff marched in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah on Monday to protest the Zionist entity's killing of medical workers in Gaza over the past 19 months of war. Gathering in the city's Clock Square, medical personnel, support staff and volunteers wore white and orange vests and waved flags bearing the Red Crescent's emblem. The demonstration marked World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, usually observed on May 8, and called for the 'protection for medical and humanitarian workers'. In a statement released Monday, the Red Crescent said 48 of their staff members have been killed in Gaza and the West Bank since October 7, 2023 — including 30 who died while performing their duties. Protesters carried symbolic white shrouds bearing the names and pictures of the dead, as well as signs demanding the release of three staff members who have been detained by the Zionist entity military for over a year. Some 1,400 humanitarian and medical workers have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war and dozens of medical personnel working in Gaza were detained while performing their humanitarian duties, ,according to the statement. It highlighted a particularly deadly attack in March in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, when the Zionist entity forces killed 15 first responders including eight Red Crescent paramedics. The first responders were answering distress calls after Zionist air strikes. The incident drew international condemnation, including concern about possible war crimes from UN human rights commissioner Volker Turk. A Zionist entity military investigation, the results of which were published, acknowledged 'professional failures' and 'violations of orders' during the shooting. — AFP
