‘New star' may appear in the night sky after deep space explosion

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Astronomers are excitedly waiting for the arrival of a new light in the sky this year that appears once every 80 years. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shared on May 1 a list of important astronomical events to keep an eye out for in the days ahead. Among the highlights was a notice for an eagerly anticipated nova event that will add just a little more light to the sky soon. 27 News reached out to Solar System Ambassador Brenda Culbertson with the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) for an explanation on this special event and how people can spot it in the night sky. She said the light is expected to appear in the Corona Borealis, also known as the Northern Crown, morning constellation. 'T Coronae Borealis (T CrB for short) is a binary system, two stars orbiting a central point of gravity,' Culbertson said. 'One of the stars is a Red Giant, an older, larger, and relatively cooler star, and the other is a White Dwarf, a smaller (about the size of Earth), denser, and relatively hotter star. Gravity of the White Dwarf accumulates some of the gases from the Red Giant partner. As the gases from the Red Giant build up on the White Dwarf, pressure increases and causes a thermonuclear reaction, and an explosion occurs that blows the outer shell of the White Dwarf out into space. The explosion is called a nova. Only the outer shell of gases is blown off, and the star, itself, remains.' Big sunspot appears, what this means for Earth Culbertson said the explosive process can happen multiple times with the last recorded nova from this binary star system appearing in 1946. NASA also reports that documented outbursts from T CrB have been reported in 1866, 1787 and possibly even in 1217. Astronomers now expect the same event to occur again in the near future. NASA has likened the event to a 'new star' appearing in the night sky for casual observers. However, this nova will be a temporary brightening of a star system that will be visible for only a few nights. 'T CrB, also known as the Blaze Star, was expected to go nova in 2024, but we are still waiting for it to happen,' Culbertson said. 'It is not what is being called a new star, but one that exists and will brighten at some point. If it happens when we are watching, and we see it go nova, that will be a nice sight to see, for sure.' People should be able to view the nova with the unaided eye once the sun goes down. NASA captures 'first-of-its-kind' image of 1,000ft-long winding trail cut through Mars' sand

NASA has captured a first-of-its-kind image of a long, winding trail across the surface of Mars. As Elon Musk puts the Red Giant in his sights and sees it as a potential savior of the human race, curiosity surrounding Mars couldn't he higher. The US space agency has made huge strides in gathering proof of extra-terrestrial life on Mars, from finding alien-like masses to other odd formations. But away from finding alien life for a moment, NASA has snapshotted one of its own over on our neighbouring planet. A 1,000-foot-long pathfinder was spotted cutting through the planet's sand, thanks to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been circling Mars since 2006. If you look at the image below, the black speck at the end of the trail in the large Gale Crater impact basin is the Curiosity rover. Curiosity has been roaming Mars alone for over a decade now, exploring and gathering information about the planet's geology and water history. Even though the Orbiter and the rover have shared Mars for nearly 13 years (or 4518 Martian days), NASA believes this is the first time the Orbiter has caught Curiosity in the middle of a drive like this. The tracks left behind by Curiosity's wheels stretch around 320 metres (1,050 feet) - which is the result of 11 short driving sessions between February 2 and February 28, when the photo was snapped. In total, the rover has travelled 34 kilometres (21.3 miles), which isn't a lot. But remember that it moves at a top speed of 160 metres (525 feet) an hour, which is 40 times slower than the average person's walking pace. Of course, this is understandable as Curiosity has to preserve its power and navigate Mars' rough terrain. But tracks following Curiosity's journey won't be visible forever as the powerful winds on Mars will eventually sweep them away. This is why the captured photo is pretty memorable. Elsewhere, scientists are working hard to explain the existence of pure sulphur - a basic ingredient for life on Earth. However, this chemical has never been found on its own in 30 years of Mars exploration. Right now, the rover is slowly working its way toward the base of Mount Sharp, where there's a web of ridges known as boxwork formations. These are important because they hint that water once flowed there, leaving minerals behind in cracks underground. Experts hope to dig further under the formation. It's believed that had conditions been warmer and wetter, it would be one of the best bets for where microbial life could have survived on Mars.

Charles Hays musicians steal the show at Pacific Northwest Music Festival

Charles Hays Secondary School's concert and jazz bands earned silver at the prestigious Pacific Northwest Music Festival in Terrace this April. The jazz band also received the top mark in the Senior Jazz division. 'Everyone did very well. And I got a lot of really good feedback from the adjudicators—the people who were evaluating the band,' said Daniel Sim, band teacher at the secondary school. About 18 students participated in both categories, rehearsing twice weekly before school to achieve the accolades. Charles Hays Secondary School's concert band showcased pieces such as 'Red Giant,' 'Chasing the Sunlight,' and 'Peacemaker March,' while the jazz band performed selections including 'In a Mellow Tone,' 'Night,' and 'Chili Today, Hot Tamale.' The Pacific Northwest Music Festival, a prominent annual event in Terrace for the past 54 years, is a highly competitive festival affiliated with Music Fest Canada. Participants range in age from toddlers to retirees. They come from across the region, a 400km radius, including Smithers, Houston, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, and the Nass Valley. Spanning 17 days, it is the region's largest event of its kind, as mentioned on its website . Last year, the festival saw over 1,400 entries across various performing arts disciplines, including dance, speech arts, piano, strings, guitar, band, and choral. Due to various entries featuring multiple participants, such as duets, trios, bands, choirs, and dance groups, the festival showcased approximately 4,000 performers on stage. Local individuals and businesses typically sponsor over 130 awards, scholarships, and trophies. The Festival Society is an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit, community-based organization. 'Although it is a competitive event, the main focus of the festival is as a learning and growth experience for the participants, rather than a formal competition,' said the society on its website .
