Red Nose Day 2025's best moments from TV mash-ups to Davina McCall's moving speech

Red Nose Day 2025 was a special one, as Comic Relief turned 40. The BBC fundraiser marked the milestone by throwing it back to the 80s, opening with a musical performance from Roachford, T'Pau and Limahl from Kajagoogoo on a stage that was pure 1985. There was a look back into the Red Nose Day archives, with favourite sketches like Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders' take on Mamma Mia and James Corden's pep talk for the England footballers getting another airing. There was also a TV show mash-up, an Oasis spoof and a message from Red Nose Day legend Lenny Henry. We round up some of the highlights of this year's show, which raised over £32 million. Strictly hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly had a tongue in cheek giggle about inclusivity in a sketch that saw the BBC ballroom show hiring "amateurs" as pros. Filmed in mockumentary-style, the skit saw Winkleman explaining that the current pros were "not representative enough of the British public", with Daly agreeing that they were all "highly athletic", "super glamorous" and "extremely good at dancing". So in a bid to make things more inclusive, they had to add a couple of amateurs to the mix. Enter comics Russell Kane and Rachel Parris as Johnny and Melissa, who pranced in full of fighting talk to Eye Of The Tiger, before shocking the pros with their ropey dancefloor skills. There were more laughs when they met judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and Motsi Mabuse, as Melissa introduced herself as the "head pro". And, in a nod to judge Du Beke's career path, she teased: "Give me a season or so and I'll probably do an Anton and level up as judge!" In what some viewers said was the "highlight" of the show, popular BBC series Not Going Out and Beyond Paradise came together in a brilliant mash-up. Actor Sally Bretton was the one tying it all together, as in sitcom Not Going Out she is the wife of Lee Mack, and in crime drama Beyond Paradise she's the girlfriend of Humphrey (Kris Marshall). All of the characters were in the sketch, along with some others from the programmes. They all rubbed along together as some mysterious things started happening in Cornwall. The crossover ended up being a madcap and slightly baffling sequence of mistaken identities and general confusion - but viewers loved it. "Not Going Beyond Paradise has so far been the best part of the night," one person said on X, as another said it was "the highlight". Comedian Chabuddy G from sitcom People Just Do Nothing had his work cut out for him when he 'joined' the Gladiators. Hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh thought he was a new contender, but Chabuddy was convinced he was actually the new Gladiator and that his show name could be Girth, Wind and Fire. Having slipped into his Spandex and a leopard print robe, he sneaked backstage to hang out with the others as if he was one of them and offered Bionic a high five. But when the Gladiator snubbed him with a withering glance, he bragged: "I'll probably take your bloody arm off knowing my strength." However, his smirk disappeared when he ended up on the Duel platform with Bionic. Insisting he needed to pause for a toilet break, he looked up at the Gladiator towering over him and asked the hosts: "I'm not going to have to fight him am I?" "Bradders you absolute snake mate!" he sniped. In a shock twist Chabuddy did end up knocking Bionic off the platform, but the show bosses discovered foul play and he was slapped with a Gladiators ban. Red Nose Day stalwart Lenny Henry made everyone's night when he appeared in a pre-recorded video to reflect on the years of Comic Relief. The comedian co-founded the charity and hosted the programme for decades, but fronted his final show last year. Announcing he was stepping down, he told the BBC: "I think it needs new blood, and I'm definitely old blood." "I can't believe Comic Relief is turning the big 40," he said in the video. "In some ways it feels like 1985 was like, yesterday." "A lot of it for the better - me, you, us, we've been on quite the journey." He told viewers: "I said something in 1993 that I am going to say again because it's as true today as it ever was. The point is, forget geography, these are your neighbours and this is your doorstep." Host Davina McCall broke down in tears as she talked about her brain tumour. The TV presenter underwent surgery last year after a colloid cyst, a benign tumour, was discovered during a health check. Addressing viewers, she said: "I had a pretty mad year this year. Doctors found a benign brain tumour by chance and after a lot of deliberating I had it removed and it's been quite possibly the hardest thing I have ever been through." Tearful, the star said the entire experience "made me really think deeply about what life is all about and about what really really matters when things get tough". McCall said she needed the "brilliance and the skill" of experts, as well as love and support. "There are so many people who are scared, they are in trouble, they are in danger, so many... and they don't have the friends or the money or the support that I did," she said. "I know I was so lucky." The star stressed the importance of the fundraiser and how it could turn so many people's lives around, thanking the "wonderful strangers" who stepped up and supported others. "I love you guys, we love you," she said. "You show up for people when they are really up against it." Oasis' feud and reunion tour got the parody treatment in a sketch starring James Buckley as Liam Gallagher and his Inbetweeners co-star Joe Thomas as his brother Noel. The spoof charted the band's rise, 2009 row (which was put down to someone treading on a tambourine and saw both stars unleash a volley of expletives) and the 2024 announcement of their comeback tour. Poking fun at the long waits for tickets, it saw one poor Oasis fan looking dismayed when his computer told him he was about 10 million in the queue. When we revisited him he was number five, but just a skeleton remained in his chair. There was also a nod to the ticket drama, where prices rose because of dynamic pricing. Piers Morgan had a role as a "Ticket Master", who told the Gallaghers: "Let me reassure you personally, everyone will be treated completely fairly." At the end of the night, the hosts announced that so far over £32 million had been raised.

Hilarious reason Rylan has a tracker on his mother's phone

Red Nose Day 2025 host Rylan Clark, who gained fame on the X Factor back in 2012, has shared an insight into his dating history whilst discussing his bedroom antics with his mother Linda Clark. On Thursday, March 20, Rylan's mother appeared on his YouTube series, Air Rylan, which is sponsored by Jet 2 holidays. In the past he has hosted guests like the One Show's Alex Jones, Ruth Langsford and influencer and I'm a Celebrity star GK Barry. The pair started discussing the presenter's love life, as his mother alluded that he had been on a date the night before. To which he said, 'Have you got people watching me or something?' and his mother,71, replied: 'No, why would I do that?' He said: 'I told you categorically that day, don't come round tomorrow morning I'm not there, and what did you do?' He said that his mother had turned up despite his deterrence, leaving the presenter shocked as he was not only in the house but he had company in bed with him. Linda responded: 'Oh well don't matter.' He added: 'Well it does matter because I was in bed with someone and I heard Rossss.' They discussed several other funny stories including the time that Rylan's mother ended up in hospital on holiday and how a fall with an ice cream ended up costing 120 grand. Rylan joked: 'When you fell you were more bothered about the ice cream and that resulted in a medical jet and three surgeries. I mean it was a lovely hospital.' The presenter's fans loved the episode and were demanding more content from him and his mother. One fan commented on the video: 'We need a Rylan Linda reality show, you 2 are always hilarious'. Another added: 'I cannot tell you how much i respect rylan. Such a funny, intelligent human. Just when i thought i couldnt adore him more, he started doing content with his mum. The perfect duo' Fans of the presenter may already recognise Linda, or well recognise her voice at least, from Rylan's BBC Radio 2 show on a Saturday afternoon. In the show he has a segment with his mother, who is very popular with listeners. So popular in fact when Rylan had time off recently, Paddy McGuiness, the stand-in host, still gave Linda a quick call. The segment sees Rylan giving his mother a ring to find out what she's been up to that week, and what her weekend plans are. Rylan is set to be hosting Comic Relief's Red Nose Day on BBC One for the first time on Friday, March 21 and is sure to bring his iconic humour and Essex charm with him, and hopefully his mother too by the looks of things.

Jamie Laing's Red Nose Day ultra marathon challenge so far

Jamie Laing is the latest generous celebrity to be setting out on an extreme challenge in aid of Comic Relief, taking on the Ultra Marathon Man challenge for Red Nose Day 2025. Former Made In Chelsea star Laing is better known for his more lighthearted turns on reality TV, including an appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, and his work as a BBC Radio 1 presenter but now he's set to follow in the footsteps of friend Spencer Matthews by taking on ultra marathons. Keep up to date with what Laing's challenge involves, where the route has taken him and how he's getting on as the week progresses. Read more: Six extreme celebrity health challenges as Jamie Laing begins ultra marathon Five foods to eat for long distance running as Jamie Laing starts ultra marathon The TV star and sweet company owner is set to make good use of his Candy Kittens range this week as he'll need an energy boost or two in taking on an Ultra Marathon Man challenge for Comic Relief. Like many a brave celebrity before him, Laing is looking to raise money for good causes by stepping far outside of his comfort zone in the physical endurance feat that will see him run 30 miles a day for five days straight. He's admitted to never having run more than 5km in one go before beginning training. Beginning his challenge on Monday, 17 March, Laing set out from London and will hopefully arrive in Salford on Friday, 21 March — Red Nose Day — after completing his five ultra marathons, totalling 150 miles. Laing told the PA news agency: "I've only sort of trained since the new year so I've done about two-and-a-half months of training and I 'AI-ed' it and it said: 'You need a year to train for this', which is good. We're going to get it done and there's no plan B so even if I have to crawl over the finish line, I'll get it done." Talking about his reasons for taking on the challenge, he added: "In my 20s I suffered with anxiety, really badly, crippling anxiety. And I kind of really feel that this run is sort of a metaphor, putting one foot in front of the other. If you're feeling a certain way, if you're feeling down or anxious or whatever it may be, just keep moving forward. "And so this is for me, for all those people who are suffering, who know someone who suffered, who has suffered through loads of things. So that's the reason I'm doing it. I've spent a lot of time probably worrying about myself a lot over the past 30 odd years and this is a real moment to really not think about myself and do something for a load of other people." Laing kicked off his challenge at the BBC headquarters in London on Monday morning, where he seemed a little nervous about the week to come. He was met by a squad of runners wearing masks of his face in London's Hyde Park to spur him on his way, but Laing hinted at his worries about preparation during a pit stop. Speaking to his colleague and challenge assistant Matt Edmondson, he said: "I've got another 10km until I've never gone that far before in my life. After 25km it's new territory." However, Laing did manage to break the 25km mark around lunchtime, calling it "the unknown" and admitting: "My body's now reminding me why I've never run past it!" View this post on Instagram A post shared by BBC Radio 1 (@bbcradio1) The day one run began at 8:30am and is set to finish in Harpenden, where Laing will rest up for the night before beginning day two. He'll also be looking to get some physio as he has already needed a little attention from his team physio on his Achilles tendon pain. Laing told the BBC at an afternoon pit stop: "I have huge respect for anyone who has ever done an ultra marathon, anyone who has ever done a marathon, I will respect you for the rest of your life. This is a whirlwind of emotions. At one point I thought I was going to cry. "I'm in real real pain. We were running down to this stop and someone came past in a car and blew me a kiss and it nearly sent me over the edge." At the end of day one, Laing made it to Harpenden in five hours 44 minutes, cheered on with messages from his Radio 1 colleagues and from stars Kendrick Lamar and Myles Smith. Laing spoke to Good Morning Britain early on day two ahead of his 8am start, admitting: "My bum hurts so much, it's a new pain that I've never felt before, but we're in high spirits." He added: "I knew it was going to be hard, but after yesterday, it's 100% harder than I thought it was going to be." Setting out from the village of Wyboston, he'll complete another 30 miles of his journey with the aim of arriving in Kettering by the end of the day. As he set off, Laing told Greg James: "Brain is a little bit tired, because I was having very weird sleep last night. Which is apparently normal, but I wasn't warned about it." However, Laing can take comfort in the fact that his efforts are raising lots of money for Comic Relief - as of Tuesday morning, the total stands at nearly £79,000. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jamie Laing (@jamielaing) The TV and radio star said he was struggling at points during his day two ultra marathon, telling BBC: "My legs are sort of giving up. There's a weird ligament in your feet called the plantar fascia ligament which I'm well accustomed to and it's really bothering me, it's really flaring up at the moment, it's like walking on glass." But he persevered and managed to finish the second leg to Kettering where his mum surprised him at the finish line. Laing finished in a slightly quicker time on day two of five hours 41 minutes. Two ultra marathons in two days would be more than enough for most people, but Laing has to get up and run another 30 miles on Wednesday. He'll start the third run in Market Harborough and while he undoubtedly has a tough day ahead of him, by the end of the third day more than half the challenge will be complete. A nervous Laing posted on Instagram on Tuesday evening: "I can't lie I'm terrified about tomorrow, every fibre is telling me I can't do it so I'll need your support more than ever!" Laing was in tears as he began his third run, set to end in Loughborough this afternoon, as he was played some messages from supporters who have benefitted from Comic Relief's help. He also told Greg James: "I'm a little bit broken if I'm honest. It's just not what I was expecting. I feel pretty emotional from it all. People are here with signs saying 'go on Jamie!' I'm trying to find the energy I usually bring but I just can't find that this morning." Laing's wife Sophie Habboo was also concerned about him as she told the BBC: "I got a call at 5.45am this morning, and he's just broken. He's in so much pain. Today is going to be his hardest day. Yesterday you couldn't imagine the pain he was fighting in his body. But today he was like, 'I don't know how I'm going to do it.' "Everyone's support is all that's getting him through. I don't know how he would do it without that. He's going to keep putting one step in front of the other, we just have to hope his body keeps up." By lunchtime, Laing had passed the halfway point of his challenge - but with temperatures across the UK warming up on Wednesday and emotions running high, it was a tough day for the star. His Radio 1 co-star and challenge supporter Matt Edmondson shared that Laing was "desperately scared of failure", but he was helped on his way by two familiar supporters. The Traitors 2025 winners Jake Brown and Leanne Quigley joined Laing out on the route to run a mile alongside him. It was Laing's toughest day yet and he finished his third ultra marathon in tears as he was greeted by wife Sophie Habboo at the finish line. The couple shared an emotional hug and celebrated him completing the leg in five hours 59 minutes. Although he's in better spirits after making it past the halfway point, Laing still has another two ultra marathons to go. The next leg of the challenge will see him run from Kegworth to Matlock and ahead of setting out for the fourth time, he said: "My ankle is really swollen, my leg is swollen, so we're just trying to ease in before we run another ultra marathon. "Yesterday feels like a bit of a blur. I didn't really know where I was, but listening back is making me emotional in so many ways." Keep checking back for updates on Jamie Laing's Ultra Marathon Man progress.

The Red Nose Day 2025 highlights to look forward to

With Comic Relief in its 40th year, the unmissable Red Nose Day is almost upon us. Developed by Lenny Henry and Richard Curtis as part of their tremendous Comic Relief efforts, the annual BBC telethon continues to attract some of the biggest names in showbiz for an evening of laughs, donations, skits and poignant stories. Filmed live from Salford's Media City once again, the 2025 iteration of Red Nose Day will mark the first time in its history that Henry doesn't appear as the televised event's host, and with over £1.6 billion raised across the decades, his shoes are frankly massive ones to fill. It's a good thing then, that this imminent TV spectacle has more than a few diamonds in its pocket. This year's Red Nose Day falls on Friday, 21 March and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm. The Masked Singer trio Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Joel Dommett; This Morning's Alison Hammond, Rylan, and Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon are all onboard to present the 7-10pm stretch, while comedian Tom Allen and Big Brother's AJ Odudu are given the reins via BBC Two for the final hour. Joanna Lumley met Amelia Dimoldenberg to launch Red Nose Day 2025 for a sketch launched on YouTube in February. Arguably the most thrilling package on the night will be a crossover between two of the Beeb's most popular titles: long-running sitcom Not Going Out and murder-mystery Beyond Paradise. Written by the former's Lee Mack for Comic Relief, it was shot on location in Cornwall with Beyond Paradise's main cast in tow, including Kris Marshall, Sally Bretton, Dylan Llewellyn, Zahra Ahmadi and Felicity Montagu. Mack himself spoke to Radio Times about Bretton being the lynchpin - her characters Lucy and Martha get caught up in a hilarious case of mistaken identity. "Because Sal's in both [shows], it's the idea that these two worlds collide, that her two characters collide – and comedy ensues," he teased. Read more: Red Nose Day: The most exciting highlights from Baldrick to The Traitors Tom Daley had to be carried to the bathroom after gruelling Comic Relief trek The funniest Red Nose Day moments in Comic Relief history "When something's new and different and throws you a bit of a curveball, that's exciting. So this time, I thought 'Rather than bring them to us, why don't I go to the world of Beyond Paradise?' So that's what I did. Because we are in a studio a lot, being out on location and being in that world is great. "We kept up the pace of the gags but you're trying to tell a mini story with a beginning, a middle and an end in there as well. That's a lot to compact in. Plus there's the challenge of filming it because sometimes in a shot, you've got two characters played by the same actor..." Meanwhile, money-raisers Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones are set to begin their retro challenge a day early on Thursday, 20 March, as they embark on a breathless 24-hour rollerskate. Commencing via Morning Live that day, the pair will be decked out in nostalgic 80s, 90s and 00s gear as they hope to stay on their feet through "immense physical strain without sleep". Skelton and Jones will be joined by a few familiar faces along the duration, including previous Comic Relief players who know exactly what it takes to tackle such feats of silly endurance. Jones said: "I've never roller-skated before so I'm nervous about my ability to stand up on skates, let alone move around on them. But I'll give it all I've got and do everything I can to train and get ready because I'm determined to raise as much money as possible." Made in Chelsea regular and BBC Radio 1 presenter Jamie Laing has only gone and signed up to be the Ultra Marathon Man for Red Nose Day. The pistol will sound from London on Monday, 17 March, where he'll set off towards the northern city of Salford - a journey that'll rack up five ultra-marathon distances and take him five days in total. "I haven't run properly since school, so to be faced with this challenge is pretty overwhelming, but I know the listeners will get me through!" he shared ahead of the challenge. "I just have to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. I'm running from London to Salford to encourage conversations and awareness around mental health, anxiety and depression - something I have suffered with myself in the past. I wouldn't be where I am today without the help of others, so I want to thank everyone in advance for their support and donations. 'I want to help raise as much money for Comic Relief as possible. The donations, however big or small, will help people everywhere get the basics that everyone needs to thrive, not merely survive – food, healthcare, education, a safe home, and a fair chance at life. Together, let's change the lives of others for good!" A healthy sprinkling of ballroom glitz is in the running order too, with Strictly Come Dancing favourites Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke, Motsi Mabuse, Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly dusting off the sequins for a special sketch starring comics Russell Kane and Rachel Parris. They're portraying two unlikely newcomers Johnny and Melissa, who thanks to inclusivity obligations are able to become the show's first-ever amateur professional choreographers. Shot like a mockumentary, the piece involves a twist where Johnny and Melissa's celebrity partners pull out of the competition at the 11th hour with identical injuries. People Just Do Nothing's Chabuddy G (Asim Choudhry) is trying his hand at the Gladiators arena to raise money on Red Nose Day this year. Chabuddy is initially convinced that he's about to join the muscular Gladiator squad, but it's all a delusion as he's actually in Sheffield to be a contender. His first test? To challenge Bionic at Duel. "It was amazing filming this sketch with the Gladiators gang for Comic Relief. A lot of people don't know this but the G in Chabuddy G actually stands for Gladiator!" he said in a statement. Also confirmed for Red Nose Day is a parody sketch featuring The Inbetweeners stars James Buckley and Joe Thomas playing Oasis brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher for charity. The sketch will revisit the brothers' rise to fame, following their journey from Manchester to become rock superstars, with cameos from celebrity guests including broadcaster Piers Morgan, comedian Hugh Dennis, and MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis. Buckley said: 'I had such a fun time with Joe, making this sketch for Comic Relief, and was honoured to be asked to be a part of it. 'Being a huge Oasis fan, getting to be Liam for the day was a dream come true.' Thomas said: 'I grew up watching Comic Relief and the big sketch was always a highlight of the night. So it's both thrilling and nerve-racking to be a part of it.' Red Nose Day 2025 airs Friday, 21 March on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
