Eastern NC fire experts remind Daylight Saving Time can also be smoke detector checking time
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Sunday, Mar. 9, 2025 was the beginning of Daylight Saving Time and other than setting your clocks ahead, emergency officials are reminding people to take the time to check their smoke detectors. Experts suggest you check the detectors at least twice per year and they said Daylight Saving Time is a good time to do it. Newer smoke detectors usually last 10 years. If you have to buy a new one, they said to write over the label when you install it to remind you of its age. The manufactured date of the device will be on the inside as well. 'Well, what we know is that we could prevent half of all home fire deaths if people had a working smoke alarm,' Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department Fire Chief Michael Brown said. 'Really, three out of five deaths occur in homes where the smoke alarm either wasn't present or it wasn't working.' Another tip from Brown is to sleep with your bedroom doors shut at night as it helps reduce any smoke and gas that could get into your room. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
