New Dunkin' ad brings up ‘genetics' right after Sydney Sweeney's controversial commercial
A new commercial has people talking about eugenics again — more than the actual product it's selling. How did we get here? On July 29, Dunkin' launched a pair of new Refreshers to its menu. To introduce one of them — the Golden Hour Refresher — the brand partnered (again) with 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' star Gavin Casalegno for a new video posted on social media. 'Look, I didn't ask to be the king of summer, it just kinda happened,' Casalegno says at the start of the 35-second spot. 'This tan? Genetics.' Casalegno then talks about his color analysis 'literally' coming back 'golden summer' as he lounges by a pool with a Refresher in hand. 'Can't help it — every time I drink a Golden Hour Refresher, it's like the sun just finds me,' he says. 'So if sipping these refreshers makes me the king of summer? Guilty as charged.' Instead of being flooded with fans excited to try the new drinks, the ad's comments section is full of people wondering why a certain word was used in the script. 'why are ads so obsessed with genetics all of a sudden,' asked one TikTok user — referencing Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle campaign — and they were far from the only one with that question. 'What in the Sydney Sweeney did I just watch,' asked one more. Representatives for Casalegno and Dunkin' did not immediately respond to request for comment. The 'Euphoria' actor's campaign, which aims to sell the clothing company's new denim line, is centered around the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,' a double entendre critics say promotes the idea that Sweeney — blonde, blue eyed and white — is genetically superior. A representative for Sweeney declined to comment to NBC News. American Eagle also did not respond to a request for comment. Some Dunkin' customers are feeling so icky about the situation, they say they're forgoing their usual coffee run. 'K so skipping my Dunkin for today,' commented one user. 'i'll go to starbucks today ig,' wrote another. 'So no American Eagle or Dunkin' got it,' said one more. And others are clearly just not 'Team Jeremiah' since Casalegno plays Jeremiah Fisher in 'The Summer I Turned Pretty.' The series' main conflict is driven by its main character, Belly (Lola Tung), choosing between Jeremiah and his older brother Conrad (Christopher Briney).

Starbucks menu leak reveals an exciting new drink
Summer is finally here, a heat dome has enveloped a quarter of the nation, and air conditioning and cold drinks are more or less the only way to get through the day. It sounds dire and not so much fun when I put it that way, but its music to the ears of fast food restaurants that desperately want to get people in the door to buy things amid a trade war that's scaring consumers away from making purchases. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The quick service industry has prepared for summer accordingly as it does every year, launching appealing foods and frosty drinks meant to act as a reprieve from the heat. Dunkin is the most recent company to drop a new drink with its collaboration with musician Sabrina Carpenter, unveiling the Strawberry Daydream Refresher today in its locations. Related: Starbucks CEO admits the struggling chain made a major mistake Starbucks is in on it too with its boba-inspired Refreshers, hoping to attract the same customers that religiously show up to buy the original Asian drink at trendy tea shops. But Starbucks wants to cater to more than just boba devotees, of course, and the chain may have something new up its sleeve coming to join its summer lineup very soon. In a post on X, the former Twitter, shared on June 24, trusted food blogger Markie Devo posted about one Starbucks update we knew was coming - but there's another one thats a surprise. Starbucks has previously confirmed that it will bring back the fan-favorite Raspberry syrup in July for "a very limited time." However, Devo says that it's coming back with something else, which he found out from a Starbucks employee. "Speculation has it that Starbucks will drop a new Raspberry Cream Cold Brew alongside the returning syrup," he wrote. Related: Starbucks makes huge investment to solve a key problem "Key speculated dates! -July 24th Rewards Members Only! -July 29th Nationwide! If any info changes I'll update!" In the meanwhile, Starbucks is clearly planning more ways than one to keep its loyal customers coming back. "Under the Back to Starbucks strategy, the company is reimagining and modernizing its beverages and food to build a relevant, hype-worthy global menu that will resonate with customers," the company said in a press release.. While Starbucks is still one of the world's biggest casual service brands, the cult favorite coffee company has had its share of challenges as of late. The data told the story in its 2024 year-end earnings call, when the chain reported flat revenues and a decline in global comparable store sales. In short, less people were coming to order their usual coffee and breakfast items. Starbucks' public reputation has also taken a nosedive per corporate reputation management company Reptrak, with 71.5 points in 2021 to 57.7 points in 2025, per Forbes reporting. When CEO Brian Niccol took over in September 2024, he announced the "Back to Starbucks" plan, which included a focus on community, simpler workflows, boosting employee benefits, and shortening customer wait time. While big changes do take time, investors are growing antsy. The stock has been dropping since late February. However, Niccol remains confident. "Our financial results don't yet reflect our progress, but we have real momentum with our 'Back to Starbucks' plan," Niccol said in a statement. Swizzels also launched a new flavoured Refreshers bar this month to celebrate 70 years of the classic sweet. Shoppers have been racing to their nearest supermarket to get their hands on the new Tropical chew bar, featuring mango and pineapple flavours. And if that wasn't enough, B&M created a frenzy recently after slashing the price of giant tubs of Swizzels sweets to just £1. The 650g tubs include all the Swizzel sweet shop favourites and classics. This includes Drumstick Squishies, Refreshers, Fruity Pops, Love hearts, Fizzers and Double Lollies. Sweet lovers were also going wild after snack-maker Mars revealed a tantalising new flavour earlier this month. Skittles Citrus contains five new flavours: Orange, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin and Blood Orange. They're now available at big supermarkets, grocery stores and corner shops across the country. How to save money on chocolate We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs... Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars. Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere. Websites like let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal. Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced. They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged. Buy bigger bars - most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar. So if you've got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

New community fund offering £1,000 grants to mark 70th anniversary
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Refreshers, sweet maker Swizzels is launching The Great Community Refresh - a nationwide initiative dedicated to giving back to communities. Swizzels is offering seven prizes of £1,000, one for each decade of Refreshers, to revive community spaces across the UK. Whether it's painting community spaces, planting flowers, or supporting local clubs, the competition will help winners bring their local projects to life. Entries for The Great Community Refresh will close at 11:59pm on June 30. To enter, people can visit the Swizzels website and submit a written statement on why their chosen community project deserves the prize and how it will be used to make a lasting difference. A panel of judges will select seven winning initiatives in July, each set to receive a £1,000 grant to make their community refresh a reality. Sarah-Louise Heslop, head of marketing at Swizzels, said: 'We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate 70 years of Refreshers than by giving back to the communities that have supported us for generations. The Great Community Refresh is all about celebrating the incredible people and places that make the UK so special. 'These prizes will support grassroots initiatives and neighbourhood projects that aim to uplift and 'refresh' local areas, from community garden makeovers to mural creations and communal space improvements. We know there's no shortage of passion out there - now's your chance to show us how we could make a big difference. 'To mark this anniversary, we wanted to spread the joy of Refreshers even further, brightening up communities and bringing people together and we can't wait to find out about all the deserving projects across the nation.' From creating a mural in a youth club or restoring a community garden, to revamping a local library or installing new youth centre equipment, Swizzels is on the lookout for meaningful projects that inspire connection and bring joy to communities. To be eligible, projects, groups or initiatives need to be community or volunteer-led or not-for-profit and must be based in the UK. For further details on the terms and conditions, visit the Swizzels website. As part of the 70th anniversary celebrations, Swizzels is also adding a brand-new Tropical Chew Bar to its Refreshers range.
