Fans Claim This Mission: Impossible Popcorn Bucket Is Cooler Than The Movie

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is here and while Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is pulling off one last high-stakes adventure on screen, something else is stealing the spotlight off-screen – a popcorn bucket. Yes, you read that right. This isn't just any snack holder. It is an interactive, key-unlocking popcorn bucket that has become the centre of attention for fans heading to the cinemas. Regal Cinemas unveiled this one-of-a-kind collectible on Instagram on May 1. It is designed with an idea that connects directly to the movie. The top of the bucket stays shut unless you use a special two-part key which is similar to the cruciform key shown in 2023's Dead Reckoning. In that film, Ethan Hunt is chasing the key to control a dangerous artificial intelligence known as the Entity. In real life, you use the key to unlock your popcorn. Once opened, the top lifts to reveal the snack inside. There is even a button at the bottom that turns on a blue light inside the bucket.

Customers said they have been given the option of returning to their movie or collecting a refund for their ticket. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Regal just made a clever move to get people back in theaters

With temperatures steadily heating up outside as spring makes its inevitable march towards summer, we inch closer to the summer blockbuster season movie theaters are known for. That season is not what it used to be, however. Billions of movie tickets were regularly sold every year until the Covid pandemic hit. Ever since, movie theaters stopped hitting those kinds of numbers, and even several years after the pandemic, the cinema has yet to hit those types of heights again. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The situation has forced movie theaters to be creative about getting people motivated to go to the theater again. Related: Regal, AMC make a genius move to get people to the theater One thing that was a huge help was discovered by AMC when it decided to start making collectible popcorn buckets, marked by the R2-D2 popcorn bucket it sold when "The Rise of Skywalker" hit theaters in 2019. By 2024, AMC had made $65 million in revenue from collectible merchandise alone. Other movie theaters, such as Regal Cinemas, also noticed and began to manufacture their own. Regal's Head of Business Development Matt Willard said that when the company did a popcorn container for "Barbie" shaped like the box the doll comes in, it "really opened their eyes" to the potential of these items. Of course, popcorn buckets are a great aspect of a strategy, but they can't be the only one. Regal just announced another deal to get families back in theaters this year, and it's a pretty appealing one. Image source: Shutterstock Regal has announced a new limited promotion called Regal Summer Movie Express. "Summer is here, school is out, and this is your chance to spend some extra time with your kids. If you're looking for affordable family activities, don't miss Regal's Summer Movie Express!" the official website says. Starting on June 10 and continuing through August 6, Regal Cinemas will offer a $1 movie ticket for its first showing on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Related: AMC announces generous offer to win back customers Some of the films featured in the event include "The Garfield Movie," "Trolls," "If," "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and "Paddington in Peru." The theater will feature a total of 18 movies during the event, and the full list can be found on Regal's website. There's also a limited deal for snacks for Regal's event. "All Summer Movie Express guests can purchase a specially priced $5 Snack Pack, which includes a junior-sized drink, snack-sized popcorn, and fruit snacks. Save an additional $3 when paired with an order of Dippin' Dots!" the event page reads on Regal's official website. Regal is not the only movie chain trying to lure guests back in the theater with tantalizingly low prices on tickets. AMC is running its own event, called Summer Movie Camp, on Monday and Wednesdays, with the first two showings of each film also sold at a discounted ticket price of $3. The movies on offer include "Shrek," "Migration," "The Secret Life of Pets," "The Bad Guys," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "The Wild Robot," "Minions: The Rise of Gru," and "Despicable Me 4." Related: Netflix CEO shares a controversial take on movie theaters AMC is also offering a 50% deal on regular adult evening tickets all day long on Wednesdays, starting July 9. The deal is limited to AMC Stubs loyalty members. AMC has said that if the discounted Wednesdays deal is a success, it hopes to make the change permanent and "almost universally available at all AMC Theatres in the United States going forward." This is the latest insanely over-the-top movie popcorn bucket

It's a snack attack. Gimmicky popcorn buckets have become all the rage as part of blockbuster releases, and after the viral 'Dune: Part Two' bucket, a new movie is entering the fray: 'Mission: Impossible.' Regal Cinemas revealed via Instagram that 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' will have a novelty popcorn bucket. Advertisement The souvenir includes a complicated two-part key to open it – as a nod to a plot point in 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,' which follows Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he tries to get a special key to control a dangerous artificial intelligence entity. 13 Tom Cruise in a scene from 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.' Ryan Reynods – whose movie 'Deadpool & Wolverine' also had a tie-in novelty popcorn bucket, declared on Twitter last May, 'Years from now they will look back at 2024 as the year the War of the Popcorn Buckets began.' The trend exploded with the obscene-looking 'Dune: Part 2' popcorn bucket that vent viral months earlier. It got so much attention, that even 'Saturday Night Live' wrote a sketch about it for a Feb. 2024 episode. 13 The 'Deadpool & Wolverine' popcorn bucket. ryanreynolds/Twitter 13 Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in 'Deadpool & Wolverine.' 'I would be really curious to know what the discussion was around that,' Timothée Chalamet chimed in. 'Somebody might be mortally offended right now about the reaction to this — or someone's going, 'This is exactly how I planned it!'' 'From a marketing perspective, I guess it's kind of genius,' Zendaya added. 'You're like, 'OK, I got to have one, I guess.'' Future Publishing via Getty Images A much as critics mocked the Dune bucket, it worked to generate buzz around the movie — a sketch on 'SNL' is the kind of attention publicists dream about. It remains in high demand, as its resale value on eBay is over $800. Rob Bennett, the director of food and beverage product strategy at AMC, told Time in a 2024 interview that the buckets – which range from $20 to $65 each – have become such a key part of the modern blockbuster experience that major directors have started weighing in. Bennett revealed that Tim Burton weighed in on the novelty movie theater cup that was a tie-in to his 2024 movie 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.' James Cameron even had 'final approval' on the Avatar tie-in popcorn bucket. 13 The 'Mission: Impossible' popcorn bucket. regalmovies/Instagram 13 Tom Cruise poses for camera during the Japan Premiere for the film 'Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning' at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Square in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. 'Post-Covid, we realized that the eventizing of cinema has never really been as important as it is now,' Paul Farnsworth, executive director of communication and content at B&B Theatres, told CNBC. He explained, 'We recognized during that time that the greatest casualty for our industry was people just fell out of the habit of going to movies.' Items like novelty popcorn buckets are incentives to make crowds want to be part of the movie-going experience, rather than waiting for the flick to hit streaming a few months later. 'The big value for us is that people come in and there's these fun things they get to take home and they're taking pictures with them in the theater. There's immense value in that.' According to CNBC, AMC Entertainment didn't sell any merchandise just three years ago. By contrast, last year in the midst of the popcorn bucket trend resurgence, they raked in about $65 million in revenue from merchandise that included novelty popcorn buckets. Advertisement They purposefully make the buckets feel exclusive, with a small supply. 'Once we're through that initial week, we see sales drop off, so we try to hit that perfect number,' Bennett told Time. 'Our goal is to sell out Sunday afternoon.' 13 Margot Robbie as Barbie in 'Barbie.' ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection Popcorn buckets aren't new, but they've gotten more popular than ever within the past two years. Advertisement 'To be 100% honest, it was 'Barbie,'' Matt Willard, head of business development at Regal Cinemas, told the outlet, referring to all the tie-in merchandise that helped make the 2023 movie a phenomenon. In an April interview with The Post, brand expert Zoe Kessler cited the 'Barbie' movie as an example of a movie that did a 'phenomenal job' with its brand partnerships. 13 The 'Barbie' popcorn tie-in. AMC Theatres The Margot Robbie film had a dizzying array of tie-in brands, including Pinkberry frozen yogurt, fashion brands such as Pac Sun, Nyx makeup, Funboy pool floats, and more. The movie raked in over $1 billion at the box office worldwide, making it a smashing hit that others are eager to replicate. 'There was the convertible car, which unfortunately a rival had,' Willard told Time. 'But we had the popcorn container that looks like the box that Barbie comes in with the clear front. It really opened our eyes to the potential of these items.' He explained that they don't have tangible numbers showing if the popcorn buckets increase ticket sales, but, 'based on the amount of feedback we get through the customer service department asking when this or that container is coming out, I would think, yes, it is driving that customer to come to our theater.'
