Iraq Launches Water Initiative to Safeguard Tigris and Euphrates
By John Lee.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has launched the Regional Initiative to Protect the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers under the slogan "Our Water... Our Future," during the Fifth Baghdad International Water Conference, held under the theme "Water and Technology: A Partnership for Development."
The initiative represents a strategic regional platform to preserve the flow of the historic rivers through innovation, technology, and cooperation. The event featured high-level international participation from companies and institutions concerned with water and environmental issues.
Al-Sudani highlighted Iraq's recent technological advancements, including:
Use of sprinkler irrigation and closed systems
Automation in dam and water storage management
Investments in desalination and wastewater treatment
National climate adaptation policies
Progress in water protection and pollution control
He also emphasised international law as the framework for cooperation among riparian states and welcomed the hosting of the 11th MicroIrrigation Conference in Baghdad - a first for Iraq - as a chance to strengthen water governance and incorporate artificial intelligence into digital transformation strategies.
The Prime Minister cited the UN Secretary-General's statement that the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are of global significance, not merely local.
