‘Wednesday' Showrunner Confirms We've Seen the Last of Xavier Thorpe
It turns out that Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) was right to leave Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) on 'read' after he gifted her a cell phone at the end of season yet, during season two of Tim Burton's Wednesday, we see her throw the phone into a boiling pot before returning to Nevermore Academy, only to find that Xavier had been transferred to another supernatural school. It's an abrupt end to a significant character from season one—but intentionally so, on the production team's behalf. Co-showrunner Alfred Gough told TVLine, 'We have seen the last of him,' and clarified that Xavier is 'at a boarding school we mentioned in Season 1, Reichenbach, which is like the European version of Nevermore.' Although firm that the character would not be returning or recast, Gough did not address the allegations that arose surrounding Percy Hynes White, who played Xavier. A series of accusations of sexual assault emerged surrounding White in 2023, which he denied in a since-deleted Instagram post. Netflix confirmed last year that White would not appear in Wednesday's second season. Jenna Ortega previously shared with Vanity Fair that '[Wednesday] being in a love triangle made no sense.' and added, in regard to White leaving, that it's 'a weird redirect, but we're introducing so many different characters that I think it kind of will get lost.' And lost it was, almost immediately in the second season—with a final art piece warning Wednesday about the crow on the headstone, Thorpe was written out of the Netflix show. Actor Hunter Doohan remains as Wednesday's sole twisted suitor, Tyler the Hyde, who plays a darker role in part one of season two. While Xavier's absence was felt at the start of the new season, as we wrote in our review, the chance to renew the show's focus around Wednesday and her friends in a more meaningful way served the show for the better. That in turn drove the point that her love triangle from season one was unnecessary, rendering Xavier's role in the narrative pointless, really—even before you dug into the accusations surrounding White. Part One of Wednesday season two is now streaming on Netflix. Want more io9 news? Wednesday Gives Xavier a Mysterious Exit in Season 2 Premiere: ‘We Have Seen the Last of Him,' EPs Confirm
A love triangle on Wednesday? How very Season 1. The Netflix drama returned on Aug. 6 with the first half of its second season, and it wasted little time showing one of Wednesday Addams' former suitors the door. More from TVLine Casting News: Molly Shannon Reunites With Will Ferrell, Trying Adds 5 and More T.J. Hooker Reboot in the Works at Netflix - But There's a Twist My Life With the Walter Boys Gets Even Messier in New Season 2 Trailer - Watch Midway through Episode 1, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) returns to her dorm room, where Enid (Emma Myers) reveals that a special delivery arrived from Xavier (Percy Hynes White), who was last seen attempting to welcome Wednesday into the 21st century by giving her a cell phone. Xavier's latest gift, while just as practical, is far creepier — it's a creepy painting of a red-eyed raven, and it comes with a note attached. 'I tried texting, but I guess you lost the phone I gave you,' he writes. 'Consider this my goodbye gift. The image suddenly flashed in my head. Don't ask me how I know or what it means, but it's connected to you, I'm sure. Who's Wednesday Addams without a mystery to solve, right?' It was previously reported that Hynes White wouldn't be returning as a series regular, but if you're hoping for a cameo down the line, you probably shouldn't hold your breath. As co-showrunner Alfred Gough confirms to TVLine, 'we have seen the last of him.' Xavier is 'at a boarding school we mentioned in Season 1, Reichenbach, which is like the European version of Nevermore.' (In 2023, Hynes White released a statement on Instagram, responding to since-deleted social media posts that alleged he was a perpetrator of sexual assault.) But fear not, lovers of love! Just because Wednesday isn't entrenched in a cliché love triangle this season, that doesn't mean sparks won't still fly. Hyde hottie Tyler (Hunter Doohan) is still very much in play, albeit in captivity, and the scenes between him and Wednesday are just as electric as ever. 'There's definitely something there, and he can definitely twist the knife in terms of that relationship,' Gough tells TVLine. 'Wednesday went down the path of romance sort of reluctantly in Season 1, and she paid the price for that, so she's closing the door on that avenue of her adolescence for the time being. But when she gets together with Tyler, sparks always fly.' Gough continues, 'There's something unspoken between them. We love to see them together and to explore that that dynamic. Both Tyler and Jenna play it so brilliantly, and there's a lot that's unsaid in those scenes.' OK, let's talk: Are you glad Wednesday leaned away from YA tropes, or did you enjoy the CW-worthy love triangle in Season 1? And what are your thoughts on Season 2 so far?
