Redhill community pub The Garibaldi fundraising to buy its site

A community pub in Redhill is continuing to raise funds to purchase its 150-year-old Garibaldi, run on a non-profit basis by volunteers, currently leases its building but has been raising funds to buy the site since 2024, when its owner opted to sell the MP Rebecca Paul praised the "amazing" pub during a House of Commons debate on Monday but warned it was "now at risk" if it could not complete the purchase."Rather ironically, the pub is so much more than bricks and mortar but it needs to buy the bricks and mortar if it is to survive," she said. The community group that has operated the pub since 2017 held an event in May as part of its fundraising told MPs "every bit of profit The Garibaldi makes gets ploughed back into things that benefit the community" and the pub "gives back to the community in so many ways".The Garibaldi was "doing a sterling job of trying to raise the money", the MP bar hosts regular social events and its outdoor space is now a community garden managed by to Paul's comments, minister Alex Norris said he was "very interested in meeting" the MP to discuss what support the government could give The Garibaldi.

Inquest into British police officer's death on Greek holiday island delayed

The family of a young policewoman who was found dead on a Greek holiday island in 2023 faces at least another six-month wait for answers after an inquest into her death was delayed. Hannah Byrne, 22, who served as a constable with Surrey Police 's neighbourhood policing team in Reigate, was on the first night of her holiday in Corfu when she suffered a fatal head injury after falling several metres in September 2023. She was found dead on the side of a main road by a passerby the morning after her fall. Greek authorities believed her fatal injuries sustained outside a bar were compatible with an 'accidental' fall. However, they were also investigating whether Ms Byrne had unwittingly drunk alcohol laced with methanol. On Tuesday, West Sussex Area Coroner Joseph Turner adjourned Ms Byrne's inquest, which was originally opened on September 18, 2023, for another six months. 'We are still awaiting information and material from the Greek authorities,' coroner's officer Anna Soczewka told the court in Horsham. Her family and friends will now have to wait until November 18 for her case to be heard at West Sussex Coroners Court. Shortly after her death, her family said: 'Our beloved Hannah was beautiful inside and out. She was extremely kind, funny, caring and had a real zest for life. 'She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.' At the time, Chief Superintendent Chris Colley, Divisional Commander for East Surrey, said: 'Hannah's death has been a shock for everyone who knew her. She was a bright, enthusiastic and respected officer just at the start of her career in policing and she will be sadly missed. As a Force, we are now doing everything we can to support her family and her colleagues at this extremely difficult time.' The Greek town has long been a favourite amongst British tourists, with around half a million usually travelling to Corfu each year.

Dogs Trust 'underdog' Rocky adopted in Surrey after 800-day wait

Rocky ends 800-day wait for 'forever home' A rescue dog has been adopted by a couple in Surrey after waiting 800 days for his "forever home". Lurcher Rocky was left in the care of the Dogs Trust in April 2019 then returned to the charity in January 2023 after his first adoption did not work out. But it was "love at first sight" for Imogen and Robert from Reigate when they met Rocky at the Harefield centre after hearing about his story from radio presenter Ken Bruce. Imogen, an actress and child carer, and Robert, who works for an event hire company, took Rocky home just before Easter and he has finally been able to put his paws up in the Surrey Hills.
