NHL salary cap loophole gives teams like Dallas and Florida extra leverage: Report
NHL salary cap loophole gives teams like Dallas and Florida extra leverage: Report (Image Source: Getty Images) All NHL teams are supposed to be playing under the same rules of the salary cap, but all teams don't play under the same fiscal realities. Teams such as the Dallas Stars and Florida Panthers may very well be doing a wonderful job of constructing solid rosters. But there is a loophole: they play in states with no personal income tax. That may provide them with a slight but significant advantage, something that creates an uneven playing field from the beginning of the season. No income tax provides additional cap room freedom In the NHL, a dollar is a dollar. The salary cap is designed to level the playing field, ensuring wealthy and poor teams have equal allowances. But Florida, Texas, Nevada, and Washington (Seattle's home state) teams enjoy a special advantage. Their players don't pay state income tax. That allows those teams at times to be able to pay players a bit less and still make the deal sound that valuable. A player earning $5 million in Florida, for instance, might earn more money than a player earning $5 million in California or New York, where they pay more in taxes. And so, although the cap is uniform for all clubs, how contracts ultimately shake out in reality differs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo This is a secret advantage for clubs like the Panthers and Stars. It's perhaps a 5 to 10 percent advantage but in a close league such as the NHL, this is huge. Their front offices have made savvy trades, drafted proficiently, and maintained healthy locker rooms. But we can't help but notice how much easier that becomes when they can make star players happy without necessarily paying top dollar. Players could decide to sign or re-sign in these cities because they retain more of their salary. That enables teams to maximize the cap and construct deeper teams. In a perfectly equitable system, all teams would have the same tax system. Until that time, fans and teams in high-taxing states can't help but wonder if they're beginning the race a step behind. Whether it's intelligent management or tax benefit or both NHL clubs evidently have a superior way to construct a winner. Finding stability for Reilly Smith with the Golden Knights after a short stint with the Rangers
Image Via Twitter Among any athlete in any sport, transitions can bring a disturbance to their rhythm because of high expectations and limited results. For Reilly Smith, the 2024–25 NHL season began with turmoil after his high-profile move to the New York Rangers. They had hoped he would be that final piece needed to bolster their second and top-six offensive line, but things just didn't pan out. What side-lined what could have turned into a glowingly bright new chapter for the sportive veteran-winger instead became an imminent escape back to familiar territory. After an Agonizing stay with the Rangers, Reilly Smith returns to an up-and-down season with the Vegas Golden Knights In the 2024 offseason, Reilly Smith was supposed to spice up the offense for the New York Rangers. Still, his stay in the city was filled with a few good moments interspersed with inconsistency and inability to get along with the dynamics of the team. Smith, the experienced and somewhat successful vet, was just unable to adapt with the Rangers' system or find the needed chemistry to make an impactful difference on the ice. Year-End | Reilly Smith: I Enjoyed Everyday Coming To The Rink To Be A Part Of This Team So as March tipped by knocking the Rangers further out of the race, it was clear that changes were coming. At the deadline, GM Chris Drury was set on shipping Smith out, giving him a return ticket to what had once felt like home — the Vegas Golden Knights. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kickstart your new journey with the Honda Shine 125 Honda Learn More Undo It was more than a return to a former team; it was somewhat of a restart. Once back in Vegas, Smith quickly started feeling like his old self. He reconnected with his friends and teammates and joined a system that would pull the best of his game. And it showed. With the renewed confidence, his game shot up, and he helped Vegas gear up for the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Edmonton Oilers. Speaking after the season, Smith admitted how much the switch had put in perspective his morale and gameplay, citing the team-oriented nature of Vegas along with all those familiar faces as major reasons for regaining his rhythm. The season did not crown itself with an additional Stanley Cup; instead, there was Smith — reinstated in spirit, far less like the one diving into the season. Reilly Smith Feels he Found His Footing After Rangers Departure
Reilly Smith's tenure with the New York Rangers was not one to remember. The Rangers acquired Smith during the 2024 offseason in hopes that he could solidify the team's top-six forward core. However, Smith struggled to find his bearings in New York and he certainly didn't provide that offensive jolt that Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury was seeking. Rangers And Golden Knights Were In Trade Talks For A 'Period Of Time' Reilly Smith is right back at home In Vegas after a short stint with the New York Rangers. With the Rangers' season quickly going off the rails and playoffs seeming increasingly unlikely by the NHL Trade Deadline in March, Drury traded Smith to his former team, the Vegas Golden Knights. With the Golden Knights, the 34-year-old forward began to look more comfortable and find his game. After Vegas got bounced in the second round by the Edmonton Oilers, Smith emphasized how much he enjoyed the stretch back playing for the team he won a Stanley Cup with in 2023. 'I don't think the last two years have been kind of the trajectory I wanted my game to go, but coming back here I felt like I was able to get my footing pretty quickly and feel good about my game again,' Smith said. 'It was a lot of fun, coming back here and playing on a team that had a lot of purpose, a lot of familiar faces, a structure that probably brings the best game out of me. It made for a fun few months,' Smith explained. 'A great experience for me.' Smith is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

'Do or die': Las Vegas Golden Knights fight to stay alive in playoffs against Edmonton Oilers
Social Sharing Despite facing a 3-1 hole in their best-of-seven Western Conference second-round series, the Vegas Golden Knights aren't lacking confidence heading into Wednesday night's Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers in Las Vegas. "We did it last series," Vegas forward Reilly Smith said of winning three straight games. "We have a lot of faith in this group. Just take it one at a time." The Golden Knights did rally from a 2-1 deficit to knock off the Minnesota Wild in six games in the first round, winning two of the final three games in overtime. WATCH | Former Oilers goalie talks playoff goaltending: Defence, goalies and more with former Oilers defenceman Tom Gilbert 17 hours ago Duration 3:46 The difference this time is that there's no room for error against an Edmonton team that is 15-2 in Games 4-7 over the past two playoffs. "It's do or die now," Knights star centre Jack Eichel said. The Oilers won Games 1 and 2 in Las Vegas before the Golden Knights rallied for a 4-3 victory at Edmonton, winning on a Smith goal with 0.4 seconds left. The Oilers bounced back from that bitter loss to blank Vegas 3-0 in Game 4 on Monday as goalie Stuart Skinner turned aside 23 shots for his second career playoff shutout. The game wasn't that close. Adam Henrique scored twice in the first 13:03 and Evander Kane made it 3-0 with a goal early in the second period. Midway through the game, Vegas had just 10 shots on goal. No surprise then that the Golden Knights, who also fell behind 2-0 to begin Game 3, are stressing the importance of a quick start on Wednesday. "We have to start better," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "This is a couple games now where we're chasing it. ... Make sure we're on our toes. I don't think there were enough players on their toes, ready to go. That will be step one in Game 5, make sure we push the envelope early and get to our game quicker." "We were probably a little bit passive and didn't put them on their heels enough," Eichel said. "I think we need to be more aggressive offensively, try to force them to make mistakes on their breakouts and get pucks back, and then make plays when we have opportunities, and get pucks to the net." Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch was asked about the importance of trying to close out the series on Wednesday. "I don't think we're looking at how many games left that we have in the series," Knoblauch said. "It's a one-game mentality. [After] we lost Game 3 the way we did, it was forget about it and move on to the next one. Obviously, there's a lot of benefits of winning that next game. One, you don't give that opportunity for Vegas to put together a string of wins." Knoblauch gave his team the day off on Tuesday before flying to Las Vegas. "No meetings today," Knoblauch said. "As a coach, you can only do so much. You don't want to overcoach. I think today is a good day for the guys to step away, enjoy the win last night, and tomorrow they'll get the message of what we need to do." The message is clear for the Golden Knights.

Golden Knights focus on fast start as do-or-die Game 5 nears (Image Source: Getty Images) The Vegas Golden Knights know the stakes. After a hard loss in Game 4, they're now down a game from elimination. They will play the Edmonton Oilers in a do-or-die Game 5 at T-Mobile Arena. The head coach, Bruce Cassidy , and top players indicate that the team needs to start better, play harder, and make wiser decisions if they are to remain alive in the series. Bruce Cassidy reports team needs to be prepared early on The Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged that the team started slowly in the previous two games. The Oilers started quickly, and the Golden Knights were playing catch-up. Forward Reilly Smith stated , "We did it last series, so we have a lot of faith in this group,' Reilly Smith said. 'We'll just take it one at a time." In Game 4, the Oilers scored just over a minute into the game and led 2–0 after one period. Another goal in the second made it 3–0, and Vegas could not find an answer. Edmonton blocked many shots, and Vegas couldn't get enough chances near the net. Jack Eichel stresses power play offensive pressure must improve Jack Eichel highlighted that the power play must improve. Vegas had three power play opportunities during the first period but were unable to score. They also lost some prime shooting opportunities. Bruce Cassidy explained they need to take quick shots when they are available to break the defense of the Oilers. Vegas also had trouble generating plays off the rush and lost pucks in the neutral zone. That has to change in Game 5. The team intends to put more pressure on the Oilers' defense and stay in their zone more. "We need to be more aggressive offensively and try and force them to make mistakes on their breakout and get pucks back, make plays when we have opportunities, and get pucks to the net,' Eichel said. 'So, it's got to be better, and we'll look toward Game 5." If Vegas prevails, Game 6 would return to Edmonton. The Golden Knights are not done yet, but they must play their best game of the year next.
