Govt yet to grant approval for Tripunithura bus terminal project
Kochi: Tripunithura bus terminal project, which is part of the proposed Integrated Transit Hub project, is facing a major crisis as govt is yet to grant approval to Tripunithura municipality for proceeding with the project. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As tenure of the current governing council of the municipality is going to be over within months, delay in state govt's decision may affect the future of the bus terminal project. The much-awaited bus terminal in the city is a major project to transform Tripunithura into a transit hub, interconnecting Kochi Metro Station and Tripunithura railway station. Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and the municipality jointly decided to implement the bus terminal project near Metro station through land pooling, as land acquisition in the region causes an escalation of project costs. Months ago, GCDA informed state govt that the authority was ready to prepare detailed project report (DPR) for the municipality. But govt is yet to grant approval. "We have to complete many procedures to begin the work. As only a few months are remaining, it would be difficult for the current governing council to start the work," said municipality chairperson Rema Santhosh. The project faced a major crisis due to lack of funds for land acquisition. Decision of GCDA and municipality to revive the project through land pooling rekindled fresh hopes regarding the project. Earlier, municipality announced that it would lay foundation stone for the project before June 2024. However, authorities failed to even start the process of land acquisition or demarcation of land identified for the project.

Municipality suspects sabotage in collapse of old school building in Eroor
A portion of an old building of Government KMUP School, Eroor, collapsed in heavy rain on Sunday night, averting a potential tragedy since the incident took place at night on a holiday. However, the Thripunithura municipality suspects it to be an alleged act of sabotage and has demanded a police inquiry. The building, which once served as a kitchen, was no longer in use and had been in a dilapidated state for long. Local residents have been demanding its demolition to avoid a tragedy since it stood on the school campus. Over 200 students from the neighbourhood attend the school. A meeting chaired by the municipal chairperson and attended by the education standing committee chairperson and municipal engineering wing officials was held on Monday morning to take stock of the situation. Later in the day, the chairperson, education standing committee chairperson, municipal secretary, municipal engineer, and assistant engineer visited the school. The school headmistress and PTA president were also present. An inspection by the Engineering department and video footage of the said building taken by the school authorities showed that it did not have the kind of damage till before the alleged collapse. This was also vouched for by the headmistress and the PTA president, leading to suspicions of alleged conspiracy for willful sabotage, a statement issued by the municipality said. 'The building is no longer in use and has been marked out for demolition. A contractor has been assigned to do that work. He will demolish the building once he finishes the maintenance works of two other schools that are now under way. Anyway, the building has been isolated and locked with no access to either students or teachers. It has not been issued a fitness certificate either,' said Rema Santhosh, municipal chairperson. At another meeting later in the afternoon, the headmistress was asked to lodge a petition with the District Police Chief (Kochi City) and the Station House Officer concerned in the wake of suspicions that an alleged conspiracy was hatched to deliberately inflict damage on the building. It was also decided to reinspect the school buildings, which were inspected by the engineering wing ahead of the start of the academic year. The engineering department has also been asked to submit a comprehensive report on the necessary measures to be taken. The recent incident in which 13-year-old M. Midhun was electrocuted by a low-hanging electric wire over the cycle shed of the Thevalakkara Boys High School in Kollam district has drawn attention to how oversight left school students highly vulnerable to life-threatening incidents. The probability of such incidents increases manifold during heavy rain and wind. A local resident said that he had made a Facebook post on the threat posed by the old building on August 23, 2024. 'However, the authorities showed scant regard to an issue that exposed students to danger. The protruding iron rods of the old structure still pose a threat,' he said.

Tripunithura municipality approves draft proposal to lease space at idle malls
Kochi: Tripunithura municipal council approved the draft proposal to lease space for shops at the local body's two malls that have been lying idle. The municipality also sought suggestions from the public regarding the operation of the malls. The malls are T K Ramakrishnan Memorial Mall, located at Kannankulangara, built at a cost of Rs 10 crore and A G Raghava Menon Memorial Mall on Polakkulam Road was constructed for Rs 8.5 crore. The malls, constructed more than five years ago using local body funds, remain largely unused since their inauguration in 2020. According to the municipal council's decision, the local body decided to move away from the centralised mall model after repeated efforts to find a single operator failed. The project will be decentralised to rent out individual spaces within the malls. "We have also invited opinions from the public over the operation of the malls. The project will be implemented after assessing suggestions from the public," said municipal chairperson Rema Santhosh. The decision comes as there was lack of interest from private entities to operate the malls in the centralised format. A recent audit report suggested this move, noting that the prolonged non-operation of malls resulted in significant revenue losses to the municipality.
