Seven-day SAR op for missing Turkiye national ends in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The search and rescue operation for Eser Demirkol, a Turkiye national missing off Pulau Yu, ended today after seven days. Terengganu Maritime director Captain Maritime Hamiludin Che Awang confirmed the operation concluded at 8 pm with no trace of the 52-year-old. The search spanned 457.61 square nautical miles using sea and air assets from MMEA and Marine Police. Divers from the Maritime Special Action Force conducted 10 dives over four days with Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV). Kelantan Maritime assets assisted in deep-water searches exceeding 50 metres. Hamiludin stated the aerial search from days two to seven found no debris from the sunken yacht 'Daisy'. MMEA will continue monitoring the area during routine operations. The SAR Op may resume if new leads emerge. The public with information is urged to contact MMEA at 09-6224357. Three Turkiye nationals were planning a sailing expedition home when their yacht sank on July 29. A storm struck the vessel near Pulau Yu, leading to the incident. - Bernama

Search for missing Turkiye national in Terengganu enters sixth day

KUALA TERENGGANU: The search for a Turkiye national missing in the waters off Pulau Yu has entered its sixth day with no significant progress. Eser Demirkol, 52, remains unlocated despite extensive efforts by rescue teams. Terengganu Maritime director Captain Maritime Hamiludin Che Awang stated that adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and rough seas, have complicated the operation. 'The sixth day of SAR efforts, which began at 7 am, was suspended at 7 pm and will resume tomorrow at 7.30 am,' he said. The search area remains focused near the sunken yacht and the spot where the second victim, Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, was found—five nautical miles from Pulau Yu. A diving team deployed a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) but found no leads by 6.50 pm. Meanwhile, the two survivors, Volkan Ata and Ates Demiroren, 42, have been discharged from the hospital after their conditions stabilised. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) urged the public to report any sightings of suspicious objects near the incident area to the Terengganu Maritime Operations Centre at 09-6224357. The trio, participants in a sailing expedition, were returning to Turkiye when their yacht 'Daisy' sank last Tuesday after being struck by a storm. - Bernama

Search for Turkish national missing off Pulau Yu enters fifth day

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Search And Rescue (SAR) operation for Turkish national Eser Demirkol, who went missing after the yacht Daisy capsized in the waters off Pulau Yu, entered its fifth day today. Terengganu Maritime director, Captain Maritin Hamiludin Che Awang, said the operation resumed at 9am with assistance from nine members of the Malaysian Maritime Diving Squadron. He said the clear weather and relatively calm sea conditions allowed the diving team to expand the search area. "Yesterday, the Malaysian Maritime diving team surveyed the location of the yacht using Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipment, but no positive clues or findings were found. "The area of the search area yesterday was about 500 square meters at a position of 5.12 nautical miles from Pulau Yu," he said in a statement today. It was previously reported that three Turkiye men — yacht captain Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, Ates Demiroren, 42, and Demirkol, 52 — had embarked on a sailing expedition to return to their home country on Monday. However, on Tuesday evening, the yacht was reportedly hit by a storm and capsized in the waters near Pulau Yu. Demiroren was rescued by local fishermen at noon on Thursday, while Volkan Ata was found safe later that same night by another local fishing boat after having swum for over 40 hours at sea. — BERNAMA
