Botafogo coach has to go two days after Club World Cup exit

Brazilian football champions Botafogo said on Monday they have parted ways with coach Renato Peiva, two days after their Club World Cup last 16 exit against domestic rivals Palmeiras.
Paiva, 55, was in charge for only four months and is the second coach of the Rio de Janeiro club to go this year, the first being Carlos Leiria.

Botafogo won the Brazilian championship as well as South America's Copa Libertadores last year under Artur Jorge, who however then left for Qatar club Al-Rayyan.
They are now eighth in the domestic league, and lost 1-0 in extra time against Palmeiras on Saturday to exit the Club World Cup in the United States. There they had earlier managed a stunning 1-0 group stage triumph against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.
Botafogo metioned this "historic victory" in their statement on X as they thanked Paiva for his service. A new coach is yet to be announced.
