10-man Rennes beats Marseille on stoppage-time goal in Ligue 1 opener

RENNES, France (AP) — Rennes scored a stoppage-time winner after playing with 10 men from the 31st minute to beat Marseille 1-0 in the opening match of Ligue 1 on Friday. Ludovic Blas was Rennes' match-winner, latching onto a long pass by Quentin Merlin before converting his finish past Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli in the first minute of added-on time. Marseille, the runner-up to Paris Saint-Germain last season, failed to take advantage of the sending off of Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal following a challenge on Amir Murillo that sparked a VAR check. Adrien Rabiot and Murillo both hit shots against the post for Marseille at Roazhon Park and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang couldn't unlock Rennes' defense in the first match of his second spell with the visitors. PSG's first match of its title defense is at Nantes on Sunday. ___

Jeremy Jacquet responds to Arsenal transfer approach

Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet has turned down the chance to join Arsenal, according to reports in France. Arsenal have made clear their intentions after going another season without any silverware, spending in the region of £200million on six new signings across a busy summer transfer window. But the Gunners' hierarchy, spearheaded by new sporting director Andrea Berta, are determined to further bolster Mikel Arteta's squad by capturing Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, as well as a central defender, before the deadline. Though Valencia centre-half Cristhian Mosquera completed a £13m switch to the Emirates last month, club bosses set their sights on Rennes' Jacquet amid growing uncertainty over Jakub Kiwior's future. But French publication Foot Mercato claim Arsenal's pursuit has come to nothing, with Jacquet opting to decline a proposed transfer to north London in order to continue his development at Roazhan Park. Rennes also have no intention of losing Jacquet, who is tied into a contract until June 2029. Widely regarded to be among the most promising young defenders in French football, Jacquet completed a loan move to Ligue 2 outfit Clermont last summer with a view to securing guaranteed first-team minutes. However, Jacquet earned a recall to Rennes midway through last term and went on to establish himself as regular starter at the heart of Habib Beye's defence, making 11 league appearances for the club in the second half of the campaign. Jacquet caught the eye playing in both a three-man and a four-man defence for Rennes. He also provided cover at full-back towards the back-end of the season. After signing a contract extension earlier this summer, the versatile France Under-21 international said he was 'very happy' to continue his journey with Rennes and 'achieve better results' next season. 'I'm very happy to be extending my contract with my club,' he said. 'The season went by very quickly, I played quickly after my return from loan in the winter and I think I played some good games. More Trending 'The aim now is to get back to work and achieve better results next season.' Meanwhile, Rennes' sporting director, Loic Desire, told the club's official website: 'Jeremy perfectly embodies the club's desire to build its project around Rennes' training. 'He was present at the Gambardella final this weekend, proof of his attachment to the Rouge et Noir academy. 'He has great qualities, particularly athleticism, and exudes a great deal of confidence and strength for his age. We hope that he will go very far and continue to progress with Rennes.' Milos Kerkez edges towards Liverpool move as Bournemouth sign replacement left full

The 23-year-old was Rennes' captain and played 33 Ligue 1 games last season before swapping northwest France for south England. The move could pave the way for Liverpool to sign Milos Kerkez, with Bournemouth already adding a replacement to their ranks. Kerkez is expected to depart the club for Premier League champions Liverpool, with a deal reportedly worth £45m agreed. The Belgian-born Frenchman, who won a sole cap for his nation in 2022, has made 191 appearances for Rennes having come through their youth ranks. The left-back has scored nine goals and provided 19 assists during his spell with the club. Speaking to the Cherries' club website, Truffert said: 'It's a great opportunity for me to keep progressing and to be part of an ambitious project. I felt the club's confidence in me from the first discussions, and I'm excited to get started. 'It's a dream for any player to play in the Premier League. It's one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world. I'm looking forward to testing myself at this level, facing top players every week, and helping the team achieve great things.'

Rennes part ways with Jorge Sampaoli

Jorge Sampaoli is no longer Rennes' head coach, the Ligue 1 side has announced. The 64-year-old manager joined the Bretons last November as a replacement for the dismissed Julien Stéphan but he ultimately failed to turn the club's fortunes around. Rennes' season has spiraled out of control with Sampaoli overseeing five defeats in as many games in all competitions since the turn of the year. Les Rouge et Noir occupy Ligue 1's relegation play-off spot in 16th place. They will host in-form BlueCo-owned RC Strasbourg on Sunday. Sampaoli failed to inject new ideas and the energy he was once renowned for in a Rennes club in a now serious sporting crisis. Get French Football News understands that the Argentine's tactical choices raised many eyebrows within the Bretons, as echoed by Seko Fofana's comments following Rennes' narrow 3-2 defeat last Saturday at Monaco. What's more, the club's executives didn't see eye-to-eye with Sampaoli regarding the players Rennes should target in the winter transfer window. Sampaoli signed a contract set to expire in 2026. The Argentine's counselors met with Rennes this Thursday to find an agreement regarding a contract termination. Former Red Star head coach Habib Beye will replace Jorge Sampaoli in the Rennes dugout.
