Yankees overreaction week: What's real and what's not?
NEW YORK — We need to get this out of the way immediately: Making conclusions after just one week of the MLB season is silly and unwise. If we were to judge the New York Yankees solely off the first week of last season, Oswaldo Cabrera was a top-five player in the sport. In other words, we need time to figure out what's real and what's not with the Yankees' 3-2 start after dropping consecutive games to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Advertisement Torpedo bats were all the rage after the Yankees hit 15 homers against the Milwaukee Brewers, but the offense has slowed in back-to-back games. Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes held the Yankees to just two earned runs, and Zac Gallen struck out 13 in 6 2/3 innings. Welcome to 'overreaction week,' as Yankees manager Aaron Boone calls it. Baseball is back. Most teams' fan bases believe their club can win it all. Hope springs eternal. 'I want us to get settled into the season right, as much as we can, because this is overreaction week with all the excitement that goes into Opening Day,' Boone said last Thursday. 'It's the week of overreaction, where we get off to a really good start and we're going to win the World Series. We get off to a tough start this week, and it's, well — so you want to get rid of that noise.' But let's have some fun and embrace the overreaction week theme by examining early-season trends to determine what might be real from the Yankees' start. Is this real? Probably not. The Yankees set an MLB record with 18 home runs through four games. That put them on pace to hit 729 home runs over 162 games, which would break the record (307) set by the 2023 Atlanta Braves and 2019 Minnesota Twins by 422. It is safe to say that the Yankees will not hit 729 home runs, torpedoes be damned. But there have been some encouraging signs for the offense through five games: Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are leaning into pulling the ball in the air, a good sign for lefties who have power; Anthony Volpe is squaring up the baseball and swinging harder than ever (he already has a third of his 2024 home run total); and Austin Wells could become a top-five all-around catcher by season's end. Advertisement Even though the Yankees struck out at least 14 times in consecutive games, the underlying metrics suggest the offense will be OK long term. Is this real? Sound the alarms! Ben Rice deserved a separate section outside of the other position players. All Rice did in spring training was hammer baseballs. That's what he has continued to do now that the games count. Rice has an average exit velocity of 99.2 mph. Batted ball metrics have yet to stabilize, so we can't look too deeply into his otherworldly power, but the ZiPS season-long projections seem to buy Rice's improvement at the plate. The projection system has Rice finishing with a 121 wRC+ to end the season. The fact that Rice crushed spring-training pitching and set a career high in maximum exit velocity, and it has continued over the first week of the season, should provide optimism that a breakout for the second-year player is possible. Is this real? Very much so. Through five games, the Yankees' top right-handed option off the bench is … Pablo Reyes. Reyes was a non-roster invitee to spring training and had to grind to make the club. Reyes is 0-for-5 with multiple errors at third base. The Reyes experiment might not be here for long. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters near the end of spring training that he would have felt better about the state of the roster if he could bring in another right-handed hitter, but that player never materialized. It's a glaring issue, and the Yankees don't have an answer. Oswald Peraza is viewed as an emergency option off the bench, which leaves Reyes as the sole right-handed hitter left for Boone. This problem could continue for as long as Giancarlo Stanton is out. Stanton told reporters he is not close to starting a minor-league rehab assignment, so answers might not be on the horizon. Advertisement Is this real? Too soon to tell. Near the end of spring training, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said he felt like Carlos Rodón was flying under the radar. He believed Rodón could become the pitcher the club thought it was signing in the winter of 2022, which was an ace. Rodón has not been an ace, but there have been encouraging signs in 2025. Rodón continues to generate good results against his tertiary pitches, the changeup and sinker, which he should feature more prominently. The left-hander allowed a two-run home run off his fastball to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the first inning of Wednesday's game. That was once Rodón's signature pitch, but the effectiveness has disappeared since coming to New York. Rodón would be the first to acknowledge that sometimes he's stubborn, but he'll eventually have to come to grips with no longer being able to challenge hitters with his four-seamer. If Rodón continues upping the usage of his slider, changeup and sinker, he has the makings of a trusted starter. Yankees, Red Sox announce starting lineups for Monday afternoon
The Yankees are back in action as they take on the Red Sox in a late afternoon game starting at 4:05 p.m. from JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. Sunday was perhaps the worst the Bronx Bombers have looked so far in spring training, as they were shutout 4-0 by the Tigers and limited to only five hits, all of which were singles. Perhaps the more concerning part yesterday afternoon was the defense, with left fielder Jasson Dominguez misjudging two fly balls that led to hits for Detroit. The position is still a learning curve for Dominguez, with the recently turned 22-year-old projecting to be the starting left fielder on Opening Day at Yankee Stadium versus the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27.
